    Limit theorems for Lévy flights on a 1D Lévy random medium

    We study a random walk on a point process given by an ordered array of points (ωk, k ∈ Z) on the real line. The distances ωk+1 − ωk are i.i.d. random variables in the domain of attraction of a β-stable law, with β ∈ (0, 1) ∪ (1, 2). The random walk has i.i.d. jumps such that the transition probabilities between ωk and ωℓ depend on ℓ − k and are given by the distribution of a Z-valued random variable in the domain of attraction of an α-stable law, with α ∈ (0, 1) ∪ (1, 2). Since the defining variables, for both the random walk and the point process, are heavy-tailed, we speak of a Lévy flight on a Lévy random medium. For all combinations of the parameters α and β, we prove the annealed functional limit theorem for the suitably rescaled process, relative to the optimal Skorokhod topology in each case. When the limit process is not càdlàg, we prove convergence of the finite-dimensional distributions. When the limit process is deterministic, we also prove a limit theorem for the fluctuations, again relative to the optimal Skorokhod topology

    Impact of ART Use on Labour Force Participation among PLWHA Using ART in Southern Highlands HIV/AIDS Program in Tanzania

    This is the retrospective cohort study which was conducted to analyse the impact of ART on labour force participation by 2829 PLWHA using ART at in Tanzania from 2005 to 2011. Quantitative method of research was applied and review of patients’ record was used to collect data. The results revealed that 92.4% of PLWHA registered on ART belong to working age group i.e. 15 – 65 years old (t-statistical value = 4.9 and p - value = 0.0002). There were 92.0% PLWHA who were able to work before ART, but labour force increased to 99.5% after PLWHA initiated on ART (correlation coefficient, r = 0.999, p-value < 0.001). The researcher concluded that majority of PLWHA using ART belongs to the working age group, and ART increases PLWHA labour force participation .The researcher therefore recommended that ART is worth continuing on with the universal population coverage. The study has some limitations as it assessed only one benefits of ART that is labour force participation of PLWHA.     In this paper, we introduce SLQS, a new entropy-based measure for the unsupervised identification of hypernymy and its directionality in Distributional Semantic Models (DSMs). SLQS is assessed through two tasks: (i.) identifying the hypernym in hyponym-hypernym pairs, and (ii.) discriminating hypernymy among various semantic relations. In both tasks, SLQS outperforms other state-of-the-art measures

    From A to Z: Using Alphabet Books as an instructional Tool with Older Readers

    Alphabet books provide a literature source for teachers to use in the classroom that focuses on a common sequence of textual organization which upper elementary and middle school students have known since they were young children. These students most likely had in their repertoire of beginning to read activities, alphabet books using common symbols to match the letters such as A is for apple, B is for bear, C is for cat. The objects were selected to match the true sound of the letter with a single or small number of illustrations to demonstrate the concept. The alphabet book addresses the 26 letters in picture book format with typically 24 to 48 pages, illustrations on double pages, and brief text (Kormanski and Stevens, 1993)

    On infinite-volume mixing

    In the context of the long-standing issue of mixing in infinite ergodic theory, we introduce the idea of mixing for observables possessing an infinite-volume average. The idea is borrowed from statistical mechanics and appears to be relevant, at least for extended systems with a direct physical interpretation. We discuss the pros and cons of a few mathematical definitions that can be devised, testing them on a prototypical class of infinite measure-preserving dynamical systems, namely, the random walks.Comment: 34 pages, final version accepted by Communications in Mathematical Physics (some changes in Sect. 3 -- Prop. 3.1 in previous version was partially incorrect
