On the nature and variability of the east Greenland Spill Jet : a case study in Summer 2003

The focus is on the East Greenland Spill Jet, a recently discovered component of the circulation in the basin. The simulation compares well with observations of surface fields, the Denmark Strait overflow (DSO), and the hydrographic structure of typical sections in the basin. The model reveals new aspects of the circulation on scales of O(0.1â10) days and O(1â100) km.
The model Spill Jet results from the cascade of dense waters over the East Greenland shelf. Spilling can occur in various locations southwest of the strait, and it is present throughout the simulation but exhibits large variations on periods of O(0.1â10) days. The Spill Jet sometimes cannot be distinguished in the velocity field from surface eddies or from the DSO. The vorticity structure of the jet confirms its unstable nature with peak relative and tilting vorticity terms reaching twice the planetary vorticity term.
The average model Spill Jet transport is 4.9 ±1.7 Sv (1 Sv ⥠106 m3 sâ1) equatorward, about 2Âœ times larger than has been previously reported from a single ship transect in August 2001. Kinematic analysis of the model results suggests two different types of spilling events. In the first case (type I), a local perturbation results in dense waters descending over the shelf break into the Irminger Basin. In the second case (type II), surface cyclones associated with DSO deep domes initiate the spilling process. CD34-related coexpression of MDR1 and BCRP indicates a clinically resistant phenotype in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) of older age
Clinical resistance to chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with the expression of the multidrug resistance (MDR) proteins P-glycoprotein, encoded by the MDR1/ABCB1 gene, multidrug resistant-related protein (MRP/ABCC1), the lung resistance-related protein (LRP), or major vault protein (MVP), and the breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2). The clinical value of MDR1, MRP1, LRP/MVP, and BCRP messenger RNA (mRNA) expression was prospectively studied in 154 newly diagnosed AML patients â„60Â years who were treated in a multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial. Expression of MDR1 and BCRP showed a negative whereas MRP1 and LRP showed a positive correlation with high white blood cell count (respectively, pâ<â0.05, pâ<â0.001, pâ<â0.001 and pâ<â0.001). Higher BCRP mRNA was associated with secondary AML (pâ<â0.05). MDR1 and BCRP mRNA were highly significantly associated (pâ<â0.001), as were MRP1 and LRP mRNA (pâ<â0.001) expression. Univariate regression analyses revealed that CD34 expression, increasing MDR1 mRNA as well as MDR1/BCRP coexpression, were associated with a lower complete response (CR) rate and with worse event-free survival and overall survival. When adjusted for other prognostic actors, only CD34-related MDR1/BCRP coexpression remained significantly associated with a lower CR rate (pâ=â0.03), thereby identifying a clinically resistant subgroup of elderly AML patients

A Search for Dark Higgs Bosons
Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal
of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs
bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb-1 of data
collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and
we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the Standard

The Early Royal Society and Visual Culture
Recent studies have fruitfully examined the intersection between early modern science and visual culture by elucidating the functions of images in shaping and disseminating scientific knowledge. Given its rich archival sources, it is possible to extend this line of research in the case of the Royal Society to an examination of attitudes towards images as artefacts âmanufactured objects worth commissioning, collecting and studying. Drawing on existing scholarship and material from the Royal Society Archives, I discuss Fellowsâ interests in prints, drawings, varnishes, colorants, images made out of unusual materials, and methods of identifying the painter from a painting. Knowledge of production processes of images was important to members of the Royal Society, not only as connoisseurs and collectors, but also as those interested in a Baconian mastery of material processes, including a âhistory of tradesâ. Their antiquarian interests led to discussion of paintersâ styles, and they gradually developed a visual memorial to an institution through portraits and other visual records.AH/M001938/1 (AHRC
B0 meson decays to rho0 K*0, f0 K*0, and rho-K*+, including higher K* resonances
We present branching fraction measurements for the decays B0 -> rho0 K*0, B0
-> f0 K*0, and B0 -> rho- K*+, where K* is an S-wave (K pi)_0* or a K*(892)
meson; we also measure B0 -> f0 K_2*(1430)^0. For the K*(892) channels, we
report measurements of longitudinal polarization fractions (for rho final
states) and direct CP-violation asymmetries. These results are obtained from a
sample of (471.0 +/- 2.8) x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the BaBar detector
at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator
Laboratory. We observe rho0 K*(892)^0, rho0 (K pi)_0^{*0}, f0 K*(892)^0, and
rho- K*(892)+ with greater than 5 sigma significance, including systematics. We
report first evidence for f0 (K pi)_0^{*0} and f0 K_2*(1430)^0, and place an
upper limit on rho- (K pi)_0^{*+}. Our results in the K*(892) channels are
