    Get PDF

Hyperthermia, Thermal Injuries, and Death from a Forced Convection Heat Source: A Case Report and Experimental Model

Heatñ related deaths of children are most often encountered in the context of enclosed vehicles in summer months. Deviating from this, a 16ñ monthñ old boy was found unresponsive in a stroller that was placed adjacent to a space heater during midñ winter. The cause of death was hyperthermia and thermal injuries. Manner of death determination was difficult due to alleged surrounding circumstances. To understand the timeñ course of this child’s injuries, a child death scene investigation was performed; the stroller and space heater were recovered. In a reñ enactment of the events, a slaughtered pig approximating the child’s size was warmed using a water bath and placed in the stroller beside the space heater. Cutaneous temperature measurements showed rapid initial temperature rise with subsequent steady increases. Tanning of the skin was seen on periodic direct observations. Internal temperature monitoring illustrated steady increases. This experiment was essential in classifying the manner of death as homicide.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/136740/1/jfo13307_am.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/136740/2/jfo13307.pd

    Sliding conductivity of charge-density waves

    Get PDF
A classical model of charge-density wave motion at large velocities is used to describe the nonlinear response of the charge-density wave in fields well above the threshold. The charge-density wave is regarded as a charged, deformable medium and its interaction with pinning centers is treated in perturbation theory. The results fit the available high-field data on NbSe3 well. The observed interference effects between a large dc field and an ac field are also explained

The Dark Arts : Magic + Intuition : The Curatorial Incubator 6

"With a nod to Arthur C. Clarke’s so-called third law, thus began Vtape’s Curatorial Incubator v.6 : THE DARK ARTS : magic and intuition. With an aim to uncover the hidden connections between video artworks that speak to the unknown, the uncanny, the other worldly, we put out a call for proposals and were flooded with many excellent applications. From these, four participants were selected – Darryl Bank, Leigh Fisher, Erik Martinson and Matthew Hyland. Throughout the late summer and early fall, they scoured the Vtape archives and beyond, seeking works that employ the surreal, that evoke voodoo, that address the unknown. It was a rich and varied journey for each of our incubatees." -- p. 3

Protracted speciation revitalizes the neutral theory of biodiversity.

    Get PDF
Understanding the maintenance and origin of biodiversity is a formidable task, yet many ubiquitous ecological patterns are predicted by a surprisingly simple and widely studied neutral model that ignores functional differences between species. However, this model assumes that new species arise instantaneously as singletons and consequently makes unrealistic predictions about species lifetimes, speciation rates and number of rare species. Here, we resolve these anomalies - without compromising any of the original models existing achievements and retaining computational and analytical tractability - by modelling speciation as a gradual, protracted, process rather than an instantaneous event. Our model also makes new predictions about the diversity of incipient species and rare species in the metacommunity. We show that it is both necessary and straightforward to incorporate protracted speciation in future studies of neutral models, and argue that non-neutral models should also model speciation as a gradual process rather than an instantaneous one
