Private streetcars and public utopias: Urban transportation and Chicago's city body in the early twentieth century

When the electric streetcar made its debut in Chicago during the 1890s, it immediately assumed a central part in the city's physical expansion and politics. The trolley, as the electric streetcar came to be known, became the object onto which urban residents projected their hopes lor and fears over the development of the city. Reformers were most preoccupied by the need to unite a city they felt to be both physically and politically fragmented, in their words, to uphold the notion of the city as body. The streetcar took on a central point within that conception: on the one hand, reformers feared it might further fragment city spaces along class lines; on the other hand, they hoped that by assuring mobility to all residents. It would help transcend new urban divisions. They envisioned the streetcar as the "artery" of the city body. Porzine epidemische Diarrhoe in Zentraleuropa

Die porzine epidemische Diarrhoe (PED), eine hochkontagiöse Darmerkrankung des Schweines, wird verursacht durch das gleichnamige Alphacoronavirus, Porzines Epidemisches Diarrhoe Virus (PEDV), das vor allem bei Saugferkeln schwere Durchfallerkrankungen auslöst. PED wurde erstmals 1971 in Großbritannien beschrieben und war in Europa bis Anfang der 1990er Jahre weit verbreitet. In den Folgejahren wurden aus Europa nur einzelne Ausbrüche gemeldet, wohingegen das Virus in Asien seit den 1980er Jahren endemisch ist. Seit dem Frühjahr 2013 wurden erstmals seuchenartig verlaufende Ausbrüche von PED mit hohen Mortalitätsraten in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika beschrieben. In Deutschland wurden aufgrund verstärkter Untersuchungen seit 2014 Fälle von PED in Mast- und Ferkelerzeugerbetrieben diagnostiziert. Die deutschen Ausbrüche zeichnen sich trotz enger Verwandtschaft der ursächlichen Viren durch starke Variabilität im Krankheitsbild und den Mortalitätsraten aus. Bislang sind keine Impfstoffe in Europa zugelassen und der Impferfolg hängt wesentlich von der Möglichkeit ab, das Wirtstier Schwein in jungem Alter vor einer Infektion zu schützen. In den vorliegenden Studien wurden die aktuellen in Deutschland auftretenden Stämme in vivo im Sau-Ferkel-Modell charakterisiert. Die Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass die deutschen PEDV Varianten unter standardisierten Versuchsbedingungen eine moderate Virulenz mit hoher Morbidität, aber geringer Letalität aufweisen. Des Weiteren wurde der Schutzeffekt maternaler Antikörper gegen eine homologe Belastungsinfektion der Ferkel untersucht. Maternale Antikörper nach oraler präpartaler Infektion der Sau sind in der Lage einen zuverlässigen klinischen Schutz der Ferkel vor einer homologen Belastungsinfektion mit den aktuellen moderat virulenten deutschen Stämmen zu vermitteln und auch die Virusausscheidung drastisch zu reduzieren. Diese Vorinformation ist essentiell zur Etablierung eines belastbaren Muttertierschutzimpfkonzeptes, das die Infektion der Saugferkel verhindert und somit wirtschaftliche Verluste reduziert oder vermeidet

La octava edición del Anuario de Espacios Urbanos invita a una reflexión que trascienda fronteras académicas. Es una publicación interdisciplinaria; no sólo porque integra aportaciones de estudiosos de varias disciplinas de ciencias sociales y diseño, sociólogos, historiadores. antropólogos. urbanistas, sino porque las diversas contribuciones logran dialogar entre ellas, hasta conformar un discurso realmente interdisciplinario más que multidisciplinario. Son los temas de investigación, y no sólo las problemáticas definidas por una u otra disciplina, las que otorgan coherencia a esta revista y definen su organización

Host records and geographical distribution of Corynosoma magdaleni, C. semerme and C. strumosum (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae).

A literature survey was conducted to investigate the host and geographical distribution patterns of three Corynosoma species (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), viz. C. magdaleni, C. semerme and C. strumosum. All three species appear to be restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. Occurrence records of C. magdaleni are limited to the Northern Atlantic coasts, while C. semerme has a circumpolar distribution. The geographical range of Corynosoma strumosum encompasses the distributions of the other two species, but also extends into warmer southern regions. Some Corynosoma populations are living with their definitive hosts in very isolated locations, such as in the brackish Baltic Sea or different freshwater lakes (e.g. Lake Saimaa). All three species have a heteroxenous life cycle, comprising a peracaridan intermediate host, a fish paratenic host and a mammalian definitive host. Occasionally, an acanthocephalan may enter an accidental host, from which it is unable to complete its life cycle. The host records reported here are categorised by type, i.e. intermediate, paratenic, definitive or accidental. While most of the definitive hosts are shared amongst the three Corynosoma species, C. strumosum showed the broadest range of paratenic hosts, which reflects its more extensive geographical distribution. One aim of this study and extensive literature summary is to guide future sampling efforts and therewith contribute to throw more light on the on-going species and morphotype discussion for this interesting parasite species
