Scale Economics, Market Power, and Pricing Behavior Evidence from German Newspaper and Magazine Publishing

The anomalous inverse concentration-price relationship observed by some researchers in the newspaper market has been attributed to scale economies. In this paper we suggest that the newspaper's (or magazine's) "double-product" feature (i.e., news supplied to readers and advertising space supplied to advertisers) is the main source of this anomaly. In a simple oligopoly model it is shown how a profit-maximizing publisher takes advantage of that feature. Empirically an inverse concentration-price relationship may arise if double-product pricing is not controlled for. Design of a bubble-swarm bioreactor for animal cell culture

Cytotechnology. 1994;15(1-3):301-309.A stationary bubble-swarm has been used to aerate a mammalian cell culture bioreactor with an extremely low gas flow rate. Prolonging the residence time of the gas bubbles within the medium improved the efficiency of the gas transfer into the liquid phase and suppressed foam formation. An appropriate field of speed gradients prevented the bubbles from rising to the surface. This aeration method achieves an almost 90% transfer of oxygen supplied by the bubbles. Consequently, it is able to supply cells with oxygen even at high cell densities, while sparging with a gas flow of only 0.22 x 10(-3) -1.45 x 10(-3) vvm (30-200 ml/h). The reactor design, the oxygen transfer rates and the high efficiency of the system are presented. Two repeated batch cultures of a rat-mouse hybridoma cell line are compared with a surface-aerated spinner culture. The used cell culture medium was serum-free, either with or without BSA and did not contain surfactants or other cell protecting agents. Association between oxytocin receptor gene polymorphisms and self-rated 'empathic concern' in schizophrenia

The nonapeptide oxytocin (OXT) and its receptor (OXTR) have been implicated in social cognition, empathy, emotion and stress regulation in humans. Previous studies reported associations between OXT and OXTR genetic polymorphisms and risk for disorders characterized by impaired socio-emotional functioning, such as schizophrenia and autism. Here we investigate the influence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the OXTR gene on a measure of socio-emotional functioning in schizophrenic patients. OXTR SNPs that were previously investigated in other studies were genotyped in 145 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-IV and 145 healthy controls matched for age and gender. The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) was used to assess cognitive ('perspective taking'), affective ('empathic concern') and self-related ('personal distress') dimensions of empathy. No group differences in genotype frequencies were observed. MANCOVA revealed a significant main (F [1,282] = 10.464; pGG) with 'empathic concern'. Within the schizophrenia group, linear regression analysis determined OXTR rs2254298 genotype, PANSS negative and general symptom score, and age of disease onset as being significantly associated with 'empathic concern'. OXTR rs2254298 significantly impacted PANSS general psychopathology scores. No associations were found for OXTR rs53576, IRI 'perspective taking' or 'personal distress' ratings. Acht Jahre Führungsnachwuchsentwicklung bei MBB: Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen

In seinem Beitrag bilanziert der Autor (Leiter des zentralen Bildungswesens bei der Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm GmbH in München) nach achtjähriger Entwicklung ein Programm zum Aufbau von Führungsnachwuchskräften. Skizziert wird knapp das Curriculum des Programms und Modifikationen während der Laufzeit. Gezeigt werden soll, daß das Bewußtsein für die praktische Bedeutung sozialwissenschaftlicher Personalentwicklung, wo es sich noch nicht durchgesetzt hat, durch das beschriebene Angebot selbst geschaffen werden kann. Angestrebt wird weiterhin ein Programm zur Qualifizierung von 'Systemintegratoren' zur Unterstützung der Fachhierarchie. Dem Wettbewerbsdruck, komplexe Systeme auf höchstem technischen Niveau zu entwickeln und zu fertigen, wird durch die Förderung der Mitarbeiter und der Qualifizierung für Führungsfunktionen begegnet. Ansprüche an eine solide Beraterqualifizierung für Soziologen: Hoffnungen, Erwartungen und Erfahrungen eines Praktikers

'Das zunehmende Interesse an dem Beraterberuf ist zum Teil erklärbar aus der gestiegenen Nachfrage an beratender Dienstleistung in nahezu allen Wirtschaftsbereichen. Die neuen gesuchten Metaqualifikationen in Organisationen im Zeichen flacher Hierarchie und Teamorientierung heißen Anleitung, Beratung, Coaching, Betreuung, Supervision. In der Industrie und zunehmend auch in öffentlichen Verwaltungen verursacht der schnell zu bewältigende Wandel zusätzlich einen weiteren Sog nach internen wie externen Beratungsleistungen. Zum anderen haben sich die Chancen für Soziologen in forschungsnahen Institutionen und/oder in öffentlich geförderten Projekten beschäftigt zu werden, rapide verschlechtert. Beratend und freiberuflich seinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen, wird für Soziologen - weniger aus Neigung sondern mehr als Notwendigkeit - eine ernstzunehmende berufliche Alternative. Professionelle , verantwortliche Beratungstätigkeit ist zunehmend interdisziplinär. Weder hat die Soziologie ein Primat für bestimmte Beratungsthemen noch kümmern sich die Probleme vor Ort um die - wie auch immer entstandene Struktur - der Studienfächer an den Hochschulen. Erfahrene Berater können heute nach einigen Jahren Tätigkeiten in der Regel nicht mehr unterscheiden, was an ihrem proessionellen Handeln soziologisch, psychologisch, pädogogisch oder betriebswirtschaftlich ist - um nur die wichtigsten angrenzenden Professionen zu nennen. Wenn man die zur Zeit wichtigen Problemfelder in Wirtschaftsorganisationen benennt: Abbau von Macht/Hierarchie, Problemlösung/Entscheidungsfindung im Team, Unternehmenskultur, Beschleunigung von sozialem Wandel, Denken in Prozessen/Vernetzungen, Globalisierung/Multikulturalität dann sind dies zwar im Kern originär soziologische Themen. Nur haben diese Themen halt auch psychologische, technische, betriebswirtschaftliche Aspekte. Der Beratungsbedarf liegt in der Regel weniger in der Vertiefung der Einzelaspekte aus der einengenden Brille eines Studienfaches als in ihrer fächerübergreifenden Vernetzung und Austarierung. Nicht umsonst sind in der Praxis zu diesen Themen neben einigen wenigen Soziologen eine Reihe anderer Professionen tätig und viele leisten hier sehr gute Arbeit. Der Markt an Beratungsqualifizierungen ist - gerade weil er boomt - ausgesprochen unübersichtlich. Von Kurzfristangeboten zur kommunikativen Kompetenz, Ausbildung nach bestimmten methodischen Denkrichtungen (z. B. Systematische Beratung, NLP, humanistische Psychologie etc.) über Lizensierungen bis zur Lebenshilfeberatung und Esoterik ist zum Thema Beratung alles auf dem Markt, was glaubt, Rang und Namen zu haben. Dieser Artikel will Ansprüche und Fragen an eine solide Ausbildung für Soziologen zum Beraterberuf generieren. Er kann auf keinen Fall Markttransparenz bieten. Dies wäre eher eine Aufgabe für eine wirklich wichtige Diplomarbeit oder Dissertation. Improving sustainability by technology assessment and systems analysis: the case of IWRM Indonesia

To support the implementation of the IWRM-Indonesia process in a water scarce and sanitation poor region of Central Java (Indonesia), sustainability assessments of several technology options of water supply and sanitation were carried out based on the conceptual framework of the integrative sustainability concept of the German Helmholtz association. In the case of water supply, the assessment was based on the life-cycle analysis and life-cycle-costing approach. In the sanitation sector, the focus was set on developing an analytical tool to improve planning procedures in the area of investigation, which can be applied in general to developing and newly emerging countries. Because sanitation systems in particular can be regarded as socio-technical systems, their permanent operability is closely related to cultural or religious preferences which influence acceptability. Therefore, the design of the tool and the assessment of sanitation technologies took into account the views of relevant stakeholders. The key results of the analyses are presented in this article

Rapid high-performance liquid chromatographic quantification of recombinant human antithrombin III during production and purification

The need for the introduction of this rapid method came from the limited availability of a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the very time-consuming ELISA procedure. The developed method is based on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography using a C 4 column. The separation by gradient elution using water and acetonitrile takes less than 20 min even when complex samples, such as serum containing cell culture samples, have to be analyzed. Automation and a high sample throughput are possible with this reliable method. If necessary, insulin, transferrin and albumin can also be quantified with minor changes of the elution profile
