    Dante’s Modernity

Claude Lefort’s ‘Dante’s Modernity’ presents a detailed and highly original interpretation of Dante’s Monarchia. Lefort casts Dante as the first political thinker with a concept of humanity defined as the whole of the human race, the first to imagine a universal society in political terms, and the first to reveal the formative role of force, of wars and division in the advent of such a political unity. Tracing the career of Dante’s innovations in the political thought and praxis of the succeeding centuries, Lefort then shows how what is ‘new’ in Dante cannot be separated from its later avatars — from the varied realizations, distortions, and misapplications it would inspire at later historical junctures. Any contemporary realization of the potential inherent in Dante’s innovative idea of sovereignty would require the project of ‘disentangling’ the links between universalism, imperialism, and nationalism that have been instituted in its name

Structure and relaxation processes of an anisotropic molecular fluid confined into 1D nanochannels

Structural order parameters of a smectic liquid crystal confined into the columnar form of porous silicon are studied using neutron scattering and optical spectroscopic techniques. It is shown that both the translational and orientational anisotropic properties of the confined phase strongly couple to the one-dimensional character of the porous silicon matrix. The influence of this confinement induced anisotropic local structure on the molecular reorientations occuring in the picosecond timescale is discussed

    The Question of Democracy

The author pleads for a renewal of political philosophy by asking what it means again to think politically in our time. He also tries to re-examine some characteristic of the concept of democracy which renews its weight in relationship to totalitarianism and cannot be reduced to an institutional system. After looking critically upon the works of Tocqueville who - contrary to most of his contemporaries • saw democracy as a form of government, the author comes to the conclusion that democracy appears to be a historical social category par exellence, of a society that in its form accepts and maintains indefinability. This is in significant contrast to totalitarianism which, establishing itself with the slogan of building the new man, in fact acts against this indefinability and tries to conserve the rules of its own organization. Thus, in the contemporary world, totalitarianism manifests itself secretely as a society without history
