Quintic Forms overp-adic Fields
AbstractWe prove that a quintic form in 26 variables defined over ap-adic fieldKalways has a nontrivial zero overKif the residue class field ofKhas at least 47 elements. This is in agreement with the theorem of AxâKochen which states that a homogeneous form of degreedind2+1 variables defined overQphas a nontrivialQp-rational zero ifpis sufficiently large. The AxâKochen theorem gives no results on the bound forp. Ford=1, 2, 3 it has been known for a long time that there is a nontrivialQp-rational zero for all values ofp. Ford=4, Terjanian gave an example of a form in 18 variables overQ2having no nontrivialQ2-rational zero. This is the first result which gives an effective bound for the cased=5

PolyMorphine provides extended analgesic-like effects in mice with spared nerve injury.
AbstractMorphine is a well-characterized and effective analgesic commonly used to provide pain relief to patients suffering from both acute and chronic pain conditions. Despite its widespread use and effectiveness, one of the major drawbacks of morphine is its relatively short half-life of approximately 4âh. This short half-life often necessitates multiple administrations of the drug each day, which may contribute to both dependence and tolerance to morphine. Here, we tested the analgesic properties of a new polymer form of morphine known as PolyMorphine. This polymer has monomeric units of morphine incorporated into a poly(anhydride-ester) backbone that has been shown to hydrolyze into free morphine in vitro. Using an animal model of chronic pain, the spared nerve injury surgery, we showed that PolyMorphine is able to block spared nerve injury-induced hypersensitivity in mice for up to 24-h post-administration. Free morphine was shown to only block spared nerve injury-induced hypersensitivity for up to 2-h post-injection. PolyMorphine was also shown to act through the mu opioid receptor due to the ability of naloxone (a mu opioid receptor antagonist) to block PolyMorphine-induced analgesia in spared nerve injury animals pretreated with PolyMorphine. Additionally, we observed that PolyMorphine causes similar locomotor and constipation side effects as free morphine. Finally, we investigated if PolyMorphine had any effects in a non-evoked pain assay, conditioned place preference. Pretreatment of spared nerve injury mice with PolyMorphine blocked the development of conditioned place preference for 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)pyridine (MPEP), a short-lasting mGluR5 antagonist with analgesic-like properties. Free morphine does not block the development of preference for MPEP, suggesting that PolyMorphine has longer lasting analgesic effects compared to free morphine. Together, these data show that PolyMorphine has the potential to provide analgesia for significantly longer than free morphine while likely working through the same receptor
The Chemical Compositions of the SRd Variable Stars-- II. WY Andromedae, VW Eridani, and UW Librae
Chemical compositions are derived from high-resolution spectra for three
stars classed as SRd variables in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars.
These stars are shown to be metal-poor supergiants: WY And with [Fe/H] = -1.0,
VW Eri with [Fe/H] = -1.8, and UW Lib with [Fe/H] = -1.2. Their compositions
are identical to within the measurement errors with the compositions of
subdwarfs, subgiants, and less evolved giants of the same FeH. The stars are at
the tip of the first giant branch or in the early stages of evolution along the
asymptotic giant branch (AGB). There is no convincing evidence that these SRd
variables are experiencing thermal pulsing and the third dredge-up on the AGB.
The SRds appear to be the cool limit of the sequence of RV Tauri variables.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, 4 table
Dense Molecular Gas Associated with the Circumnuclear Star Forming Ring in the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 6951
We present high resolution (3" - 5") observations of CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0)
emission from the circumnuclear star forming ring in the barred spiral galaxy
NGC 6951, a host of a type-2 Seyfert, using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and
45 m telescope. We find that most of the HCN emission is associated with the
circumnuclear ring, where vigorous star formation occurs. The HCN to CO
integrated intensity ratio is also enhanced in the star forming ring; the peak
value of HCN/CO ratio is 0.18, which is comparable to the ratio in the
starbursts NGC 253 and M82. The formation mechanism of dense molecular gas has
been investigated. We find that the shocks along the orbit crowding do not
promote the formation of the dense molecular gas effectively but enhance the
presence of low density GMCs. Instead, gravitational instabilities of the gas
can account for the dense molecular gas formation. The HCN/CO ratio toward the
Seyfert nucleus of NGC 6951 is a rather normal value (0.086), in contrast with
other Seyferts NGC 1068 and M51 where extremely high HCN/CO value of ~ 0.5 have

Attitudes toward cost-conscious care among U.S. physicians and medical students: analysis of national cross-sectional survey data by age and stage of training
Abstract
Background
The success of initiatives intended to increase the value of health care depends, in part, on the degree to which cost-conscious care is endorsed by current and future physicians. This study aimed to first analyze attitudes of U.S. physicians by age and then compare the attitudes of physicians and medical students.
Methods
A paper survey was mailed in mid-2012 to 3897 practicing physicians randomly selected from the American Medical Association Masterfile. An electronic survey was sent in early 2015 to all 5,992 students at 10âU.S. medical schools. Survey items measured attitudes toward cost-conscious care and perceived responsibility for reducing healthcare costs. Physician responses were first compared across age groups (30â40âyears, 41â50âyears, 51â60âyears, andâ>â60âyears) and then compared to student responses using Chi square tests and logistic regression analyses (controlling for sex).
Results
A total of 2,556 physicians (65%) and 3395 students (57%) responded. Physician attitudes generally did not differ by age, but differed significantly from those of students. Specifically, students were more likely than physicians to agree that cost to society should be important in treatment decisions (pâ<â0.001) and that physicians should sometimes deny beneficial but costly services (pâ<â0.001). Students were less likely to agree that it is unfair to ask physicians to be cost-conscious while prioritizing patient welfare (pâ<â0.001). Compared to physicians, students assigned more responsibility for reducing healthcare costs to hospitals and health systems (pâ<â0.001) and less responsibility to lawyers (pâ<â0.001) and patients (pâ<â0.001). Nearly all significant differences persisted after controlling for sex and when only the youngest physicians were compared to students.
Conclusions
Physician attitudes toward cost-conscious care are similar across age groups. However, physician attitudes differ significantly from medical students, even among the youngest physicians most proximate to students in age. Medical student responses suggest they are more accepting of cost-conscious care than physicians and attribute more responsibility for reducing costs to organizations and systems rather than individuals. This may be due to the combined effects of generational differences, new medical school curricula, studentsâ relative inexperience providing cost-conscious care within complex healthcare systems, and the rapidly evolving U.S. healthcare system.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146517/1/12909_2018_Article_1388.pd
