Algebraic cobordism of bundles on varieties
The double point relation defines a natural theory of algebraic cobordism for
bundles on varieties. We construct a simple basis (over the rationals) of the
corresponding cobordism groups over Spec(C) for all dimensions of varieties and
ranks of bundles. The basis consists of split bundles over products of
projective spaces. Moreover, we prove the full theory for bundles on varieties
is an extension of scalars of standard algebraic cobordism.Comment: 24 pages, reference adde
New analytic results for electroweak baryon number violation
Real-time anomalous fermion number violation has been investigated for
massless chiral fermions in spherically symmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills gauge field
backgrounds which can be weakly dissipative or even nondissipative. Restricting
consideration to spherically symmetric fermion fields, a relation has been
found between the spectral flow of the Dirac Hamiltonian and two
characteristics of the background gauge field. This new result may be relevant
to electroweak baryon number violation in the early universe.Comment: 7 pages with jhep3.cls, based on a talk at the International

Theoretical studies of the transport and removal processes of Sahara dust
The processes controlling the evolution of aerosol particles may be divided into dynamic processes concerned with the motions of air currents and microphysical processes concerned with the growth of the individual particles. The Ames planetary boundary layer model was modified to construct a subsynoptic scale aerosol model to study the long term fate of the Saharan dust. The transport model consists of a mixed layer, a convection layer, and free atmosphere. Conditions used for a preliminary test run and results obtained are described
Propagation and smoothing of shocks in alternative social security systems
Even with well-developed capital markets, there is no private market mechanism for trading between current and future generations. This generates a potential role for public old-age pension systems to spread economic and demographic shocks among different generations. This paper evaluates how different systems smooth and propagate shocks to productivity, fertility, mortality and migration in a realistic OLG model. We use reductions in the variance of wealth equivalents to measure performance, starting with the existing U.S. system as a unifying framework, in which we vary how much taxes and benefits adjust, and which we then compare to the existing German and Swedish systems. We find that system design and shock type are key factors. The German system and the benefit-adjustment-only U.S. system best smooth productivity shocks, which are by far the most important shocks. Overall, the German system performs best, while the Swedish system, which includes a buffer stock to relax annual budget constraints, performs rather poorly. Focusing on the U.S. system, reliance solely on tax adjustment fares best for mortality and migration shocks, while equal reliance on tax and benefit adjustments is best for fertility shocks
Laser ignition of iso-octane air aerosols
Iso-octane aerosols in air have been ignited with a focused Nd:YAG laser at pressures and temperatures of 100kPa and 270K and imaged using schlieren photography. The aerosol was generated using the Wilson cloud chamber technique. The droplet diameter, gas phase equivalence ratio and droplet number density were determined. The input laser energy and overall equivalence ratio were varied. For 270mJ pulse energies initial breakdown occurred at a number of sites along the laser beam axis. From measurements of the shock wave velocity it was found that energy was not deposited into the sites evenly. At pulse energies of 32mJ a single ignition site was observed. Overall fuel lean flames were observed to locally extinguish, however both stoichiometric and fuel rich flames were ignited. The minimum ignition energy was found to depend on the likelihood of a droplet existing at the focus of the laser beam
