    Experimental Analysis on Autonomic Strategies for Cloud Elasticity

    International audienceIn spite of the indubitable advantages of elasticity in Cloud infrastructures, some technical and conceptual limitations are still to be considered. For instance , resource start up time is generally too long to react to unexpected workload spikes. Also, the billing cycles' granularity of existing pricing models may incur consumers to suffer from partial usage waste. We advocate that the software layer can take part in the elasticity process as the overhead of software reconfigurations can be usually considered negligible if compared to infrastructure one. Thanks to this extra level of elasticity, we are able to define cloud reconfigurations that enact elasticity in both software and infrastructure layers so as to meet demand changes while tackling those limitations. This paper presents an autonomic approach to manage cloud elasticity in a cross-layered manner. First, we enhance cloud elasticity with the software elasticity model. Then, we describe how our au-tonomic cloud elasticity model relies on dynamic selection of elasticity tactics. We present an experimental analysis of a subset of those elasticity tactics under different scenarios in order to provide insights on strategies that could drive the autonomic selection of the proper tactics to be applied

    Ca2+-activated K+ Channels in Murine Endothelial Cells: Block by Intracellular Calcium and Magnesium

    The intermediate (IKCa) and small (SKCa) conductance Ca2+-sensitive K+ channels in endothelial cells (ECs) modulate vascular diameter through regulation of EC membrane potential. However, contribution of IKCa and SKCa channels to membrane current and potential in native endothelial cells remains unclear. In freshly isolated endothelial cells from mouse aorta dialyzed with 3 μM free [Ca2+]i and 1 mM free [Mg2+]i, membrane currents reversed at the potassium equilibrium potential and exhibited an inward rectification at positive membrane potentials. Blockers of large-conductance, Ca2+-sensitive potassium (BKCa) and strong inward rectifier potassium (Kir) channels did not affect the membrane current. However, blockers of IKCa channels, charybdotoxin (ChTX), and of SKCa channels, apamin (Ap), significantly reduced the whole-cell current. Although IKCa and SKCa channels are intrinsically voltage independent, ChTX- and Ap-sensitive currents decreased steeply with membrane potential depolarization. Removal of intracellular Mg2+ significantly increased these currents. Moreover, concomitant reduction of the [Ca2+]i to 1 μM caused an additional increase in ChTX- and Ap-sensitive currents so that the currents exhibited theoretical outward rectification. Block of IKCa and SKCa channels caused a significant endothelial membrane potential depolarization (≈11 mV) and decrease in [Ca2+]i in mesenteric arteries in the absence of an agonist. These results indicate that [Ca2+]i can both activate and block IKCa and SKCa channels in endothelial cells, and that these channels regulate the resting membrane potential and intracellular calcium in native endothelium

    Effect of phytase on phytate P utilization by turkeys

    An in vitro method was developed for poultry to predict inorganic phosphorus release from maize-soya bean feeds containing supplemental phytase (E.C. 3.1.3.8), and to quantify the effect of acid phosphatase (E.C. 3.1,3.2.), fungal protease (E.C. 3.4.23.6) and Aspergillus niger cellulase (E.C. 3.2.1.4.) on phytate dephosphorylation. Pepsin and pancreatin digestion periods were preceded by a 30 min preincubation at pH 5.25 to simulate digestion in the crop of poultry. Pancreatin digestion was carried out in dialysis tubings, with a ratio of about 1:25 (v/v) between the digesta and dialyzing medium, to simulate gradient absorption from the duodenum. The feed/water ratio was kept within physiological limits and a constant feed weight to digestive enzymes was maintained. There was a linear response to increasing dosages of phytase up to 1000 FTU/kg feed, and to increasing phosphate concentration in feeds. In vivo validation was performed with growing turkeys (1-3 wk) fed diets containing 12 g/kg of calcium; 0, 500, 1000 FTU/kg of phytase in a factorial arrangement with 0, 1, 2, 3 g/kg of supplemental phosphate (from KH2PO4). After a simple transformation (variable/in vitro phosphorus = f (in vitro phosphorus)) amounts of phosphorus hydrolyzed from feed samples by in vitro digestions correlated with the 3 week body weight gains (R= 0.986 P [less than] 0.0001), toe ash (R=0.952 P [less than] 0.0001), feed intake (R=0.994 P [less than] 0.0001) and feed efficiency (R=0.992 P [less than] 0.0001). The dephosphorylating ability of phytase in vitro was significantly enhanced (P [less than] 0.05) by the addition of acid phosphatase.     Towards QoS-Oriented SLA Guarantees for Online Cloud Services

    International audienceCloud Computing provides a convenient means of remote on-demand and pay-per-use access to computing resources. However, its ad hoc management of quality-of-service and SLA poses significant challenges to the performance, dependability and costs of online cloud services. The paper precisely addresses this issue and makes a threefold contribution. First, it introduces a new cloud model, the SLAaaS (SLA aware Service) model. SLAaaS enables a systematic integration of QoS levels and SLA into the cloud. It is orthogonal to other cloud models such as SaaS or PaaS, and may apply to any of them. Second, the paper introduces CSLA, a novel language to describe QoS-oriented SLA associated with cloud services. Third, the paper presents a control-theoretic approach to provide performance, dependability and cost guarantees for online cloud services, with time-varying workloads. The proposed approach is validated through case studies and extensive experiments with online services hosted in clouds such as Amazon EC2. The case studies illustrate SLA guarantees for various services such as a MapReduce service, a cluster-based multi-tier e-commerce service, and a low-level locking service

    Generic local distinguishability and completely entangled subspaces

    A subspace of a multipartite Hilbert space is completely entangled if it contains no product states. Such subspaces can be large with a known maximum size, S, approaching the full dimension of the system, D. We show that almost all subspaces with dimension less than or equal to S are completely entangled, and then use this fact to prove that n random pure quantum states are unambiguously locally distinguishable if and only if n does not exceed D-S. This condition holds for almost all sets of states of all multipartite systems, and reveals something surprising. The criterion is identical for separable and for nonseparable states: entanglement makes no difference.Comment: 12 page

    A Model-based Architecture for Autonomic and Heterogeneous Cloud Systems

    Best Paper AwardInternational audienceOver the last few years, Autonomic Computing has been a key enabler for Cloud system's dynamic adaptation. However, autonomously managing complex systems (such as in the Cloud context) is not trivial and may quickly become fastidious and error-prone. We advocate that Cloud artifacts, regardless of the layer carrying them, share many common characteristics. Thus, this makes it possible to specify, (re)configure and monitor them in an homogeneous way. To this end, we propose a generic model-based architecture for allowing the autonomic management of any Cloud system. From a " XaaS " model describing a given Cloud system, possibly over multiple layers of the Cloud stack, Cloud administrators can derive an autonomic manager for this system. This paper introduces the designed model-based architecture, and notably its core generic XaaS modeling language. It also describes the integration with a constraint solver to be used by the autonomic manager , as well as the interoperability with a Cloud standard (TOSCA). It presents an implementation (with its application on a multi-layer Cloud system) and compares the proposed approach with other existing solutions

    A critique of Bernstein’s beyond objectivism and relativism: science, hermeneutics, and praxis

    This analysis comments on Bernstein’s lack of clear understanding of subjectivity, based on his book, Beyond Objectivism and Relativism: Science, Hermeneutics, and Praxis. Bernstein limits his interpretation of subjectivity to thinkers such as Gadamer and Habermas. The authors analyze the ideas of classic scholars such as Edmund Husserl and Friedrich Nietzsche. Husserl put forward his notion of transcendental subjectivity and phenomenological ramifications of the relationship between subjectivity and objectivity. Nietzsche referred to subjectivity as “perspectivism,” the inescapable fact that any and all consciousnesses exist in space and time. Consciousness is fundamentally constituted of cultural, linguistic, and historical dimensions
