    Raytheon -- Design of Boat Hull Segments Using Additive Manufacturing

    The purpose of this project was to assess the effectiveness of designing and producing a boat hull in segments, using additive manufacturing. The group accomplished this, by completing an in-depth research into additive manufacturing processes and 3 Dimensional (3D) printing techniques. The design was to be dimensionally stable, and have a process that strives for easy repeatability and reproducibility. Evaluated was the V-Bottom, Round Bottom and Flat Bottom style. Through the use of modeling the different hull styles in SolidWorks it was determined the Flat bottom was more stable and reproducible. The hull was broken into four segments and used finger joints to align and join the segments. The 3D printer used was capable of printing Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETG), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Nylon, Carbon Fiber and Polycarbonate. After printing with all these materials it was determined ASA would be the best fit for additive manufacturing of a boat hull. After the segments were printed and joined together with adhesives a waterproof coating was applied. The assembled hull was subjected to a series of strength tests to determine its effectiveness in this application. The finished product rode smoothly in water, was weather resistant, safe, buoyant, and reliable to manufacture

    Helping Others as a Response to Reconcile a Criminal Past:The Role of the Wounded Healer in Prisoner Reentry Programs

    Anecdotal evidence suggests that many of the staff members working for prisoner reentry programs are formerly incarcerated persons. Moreover, criminologists have written that the strengths-based role of the “wounded healer” or “professional ex-” is exemplified by released prisoners who desist from a deviant career by replacing it with an occupation as a paraprofessional, lay therapist, or counselor. Despite these observations, there is a paucity of research about formerly incarcerated persons employed by agencies that provide reentry-related programming. This study begins to fill this gap by examining whether, how, and why the staff members of prisoner reentry programs differ from the clients. Characteristics of formerly incarcerated persons thought to be related to desistance and reconciling a criminal past such as overcoming stigma, prosocial attitudes and beliefs, active coping strategies, psychological well-being, and satisfaction with life are examined. Findings support the notion that the wounded healer or professional ex- role is related to desistance and can potentially transform formerly incarcerated persons from being part of “the problem” into part of “the solution” to reduce crime and recidivism. </jats:p

    Background: Fiber tracking with diffusion-weighted MRI has become an essential tool for estimating in vivo brain white matter architecture. Fiber tracking results are sensitive to the choice of processing method and tracking criteria. Purpose: To assess the variability for an algorithm in group studies reproducibility is of critical context. However, reproducibility does not assess the validity of the brain connections. Phantom studies provide concrete quantitative comparisons of methods relative to absolute ground truths, yet do no capture variabilities because of in vivo physiological factors. The ISMRM 2017 TraCED challenge was created to fulfill the gap. Study Type: A systematic review of algorithms and tract reproducibility studies. Subjects: Single healthy volunteers. Field Strength/Sequence: 3.0T, two different scanners by the same manufacturer. The multishell acquisition included b-values of 1000, 2000, and 3000 s/mm 2 with 20, 45, and 64 diffusion gradient directions per shell, respectively. Assessment: Nine international groups submitted 46 tractography algorithm entries each consisting 16 tracts per scan. The algorithms were assessed using intraclass correlation (ICC) and the Dice similarity measure. Statistical Tests: Containment analysis was performed to assess if the submitted algorithms had containment within tracts of larger volume submissions. This also serves the purpose to detect if spurious submissions had been made. Results: The top five submissions had high ICC and Dice >0.88. Reproducibility was high within the top five submissions when assessed across sessions or across scanners: 0.87–0.97. Containment analysis shows that the top five submissions are contained within larger volume submissions. From the total of 16 tracts as an outcome relatively the number of tracts with high, moderate, and low reproducibility were 8, 4, and 4. Data Conclusion: The different methods clearly result in fundamentally different tract structures at the more conservative specificity choices. Data and challenge infrastructure remain available for continued analysis and provide a platform for comparison. Level of Evidence: 5. Technical Efficacy Stage: 1 J. Magn. Reson.     An Open, Large-Scale, Collaborative Effort to Estimate the Reproducibility of Psychological Science

    Reproducibility is a defining feature of science. However, because of strong incentives for innovation and weak incentives for confirmation, direct replication is rarely practiced or published. The Reproducibility Project is an open, large-scale, collaborative effort to systematically examine the rate and predictors of reproducibility in psychological science. So far, 72 volunteer researchers from 41 institutions have organized to openly and transparently replicate studies published in three prominent psychological journals in 2008. Multiple methods will be used to evaluate the findings, calculate an empirical rate of replication, and investigate factors that predict reproducibility. Whatever the result, a better understanding of reproducibility will ultimately improve confidence in scientific methodology and findings
