Inelastic Diffraction and Spectroscopy of Very Weakly Bound Clusters
We study the coherent inelastic diffraction of very weakly bound two body
clusters from a material transmission grating. We show that internal
transitions of the clusters can lead to new separate peaks in the diffraction
pattern whose angular positions determine the excitation energies. Using a
quantum mechanical approach to few body scattering theory we determine the
relative peak intensities for the diffraction of the van der Waals dimers
(D_2)_2 and H_2-D_2. Based on the results for these realistic examples we
discuss the possible applications and experimental challenges of this coherent

Carbon isotope ratios of Great Plains soils and in wheat-fallow systems
Includes bibliographical references (pages 1076-1077).The purposes of this study were to improve knowledge of regional vegetation patterns of C3 and C4 plants in the North American Great Plains and to use δ13C methodology and long-term research sites to determine contributions of small-grain crops to total soil organic carbon (SOC) now present. Archived and recent soil samples were used. Detailed soil sampling was in 1993 at long-term sites near Akron, CO, and Sidney, NE. After soil sieving, drying, and deliming, SOC and δ13C were determined using an automated C/N analyzer interfaced to an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer. Yield records from long-term experimental sites were used to estimate the amount of C3 plant residue C returned to the soil. Results from δ13C analyses of soils from near Waldheim, Saskatchewan, to Big Springs, TX, showed a strong north to south decrease in SOC derived from C3 plants and a corresponding increase from C4 plants. The δ13C analyses gave evidence that C3 plant residue C (possibly from shrubs) is increasing at the Big Springs, TX, and Lawton, OK, sites. Also, δ13C analyses of subsoil and topsoil layers shows evidence of a regional shift to more C3 species, possibly because of a cooler climate during the past few hundreds to thousands of years. Data from long-term research sites indicate that the efficiency of incorporation of small-grain crop residue C was about 5.4% during 84 year at Akron, CO, and about 10.5% during 20 year at Sidney, NE. The 14C age of the SOC at 0- to 10-cm depth was 193 year and at 30 to 45 cm was 4000 yr; 14C age of nonhydrolyzable C was 2000 and 7000 year for these same two respective depths. Natural partitioning of the 13C isotope by the photosynthetic pathways of C3 and C4 plants provides a potentially powerful tool to study SOC dynamics at both regional and local scales

Archiving multi-epoch data and the discovery of variables in the near infrared
We present a description of the design and usage of a new synoptic pipeline
and database model for time series photometry in the VISTA Data Flow System
(VDFS). All UKIRT-WFCAM data and most of the VISTA main survey data will be
processed and archived by the VDFS. Much of these data are multi-epoch, useful
for finding moving and variable objects. Our new database design allows the
users to easily find rare objects of these types amongst the huge volume of
data being produced by modern survey telescopes. Its effectiveness is
demonstrated through examples using Data Release 5 of the UKIDSS Deep
Extragalactic Survey (DXS) and the WFCAM standard star data. The synoptic
pipeline provides additional quality control and calibration to these data in
the process of generating accurate light-curves. We find that 0.6+-0.1% of
stars and 2.3+-0.6% of galaxies in the UKIDSS-DXS with K<15 mag are variable

The Beginning and Evolution of the Universe
We review the current standard model for the evolution of the Universe from
an early inflationary epoch to the complex hierarchy of structure seen today.
We summarize and provide key references for the following topics: observations
of the expanding Universe; the hot early Universe and nucleosynthesis; theory
and observations of the cosmic microwave background; Big Bang cosmology;
inflation; dark matter and dark energy; theory of structure formation; the cold
dark matter model; galaxy formation; cosmological simulations; observations of
galaxies, clusters, and quasars; statistical measures of large-scale structure;
and measurement of cosmological parameters. We conclude with discussion of some
open questions in cosmology. This review is designed to provide a graduate
student or other new worker in the field an introduction to the cosmological
