Astrophysical S-factor for 16^{16}O+16^{16}O within the adiabatic molecular picture

The astrophysical S-factor for 16^{16}O + 16^{16}O is investigated within the adiabatic molecular picture. It very well explains the available experimental data. The collective radial mass causes a pronounced resonant structure in the S-factor excitation function, providing a motivation for measuring the 16^{16}O + 16^{16}O fusion cross section at deep sub-barrier energies.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, SOTANCP2008 Conference, Strasbourg, France, May 13-16, 2008, To appear in IJMP

Pregrad

The white dwarf cooling sequence of 47 Tucanae

    Get PDF
47 Tucanae is one of the most interesting and well observed and theoretically studied globular clusters. This allows us to study the reliability of our understanding of white dwarf cooling sequences, to confront different methods to determine its age, and to assess other important characteristics, like its star formation history. Here we present a population synthesis study of the cooling sequence of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. In particular, we study the distribution of effective temperatures, the shape of the color-magnitude diagram, and the corresponding magnitude and color distributions. We do so using an up-to-date population synthesis code based on Monte Carlo techniques, that incorporates the most recent and reliable cooling sequences and an accurate modeling of the observational biases. We find a good agreement between our theoretical models and the observed data. Thus, our study, rules out previous claims that there are still missing physics in the white dwarf cooling models at moderately high effective temperatures. We also derive the age of the cluster using the termination of the cooling sequence, obtaining a good agreement with the age determinations using the main-sequence turn-off. Finally, we find that the star formation history of the cluster is compatible with that btained using main sequence stars, which predict the existence of two distinct populations. We conclude that a correct modeling of the white dwarf population of globular clusters, used in combination with the number counts of main sequence stars provides an unique tool to model the properties of globular clusters.Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures accepted for publication in A &

Species of the Pasteurella genus are part of the oropharyngeal microbiota of many animal species. In poultry, Pasteurella multocida causes fowl cholera, the chronic manifestation of which can include neurological symptoms. Pasteurella canis causes osteomyelitis and other infections in humans. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of cranial osteomyelitis associated with Pasteurella canis in broiler chickens in Chile

White dwarf constraints on a varying GG

    Get PDF
A secular variation of GG modifies the structure and evolutionary time scales of white dwarfs. Using an state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary code, an up-to-date pulsational code, and a detailed population synthesis code we demonstrate that the effects of a running GG are obvious both in the properties of individual white dwarfs, and in those of the white dwarf populations in clusters. Specifically, we show that the white dwarf evolutionary sequences depend on both the value of G˙/G\dot G/G, and on the value of GG when the white dwarf was born. We show as well that the pulsational properties of variable white dwarfs can be used to constrain G˙/G\dot G/G. Finally, we also show that the ensemble properties of of white dwarfs in clusters can also be used to set upper bounds to G˙/G\dot G/G. Precisely, the tightest bound --- G˙/G1.81012\dot G/G \sim -1.8 10^{-12} yr1^{-1} --- is obtained studying the population of the old, metal-rich, well populated, open cluster NGC 6791. Less stringent upper limits can be obtained comparing the theoretical results obtained taking into account the effects of a running GG with the measured rates of change of the periods of two well studied pulsating white dwarfs, G117--B15A and R548. Using these white dwarfs we obtain G˙/G1.8×1010\dot G/G\sim -1.8\times 10^{-10} yr1^{-1}, and G˙/G1.3×1010\dot G/G\sim -1.3\times 10^{-10} yr1^{-1}, respectively, which although less restrictive than the previous bound, can be improved measuring the rate of change of the period of massive white dwarfs.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. The paints, graffitis or marks on urban walls and furniture of cities are part of the visual setting of our environment. More than images, they are messages that express the stress between social groups; they give information that will be later censored by media, or they express an individual or collective feeling. The following research project aims to find the characteristics presented in the graffitis gathered on the campus of Pereira’s Technological University around the first semester of 2014. These brands at the interior of the alma mater usually are erased by the administration of the university around a period that does not last more than 24 hours. This situation makes difficult to have such studies about the topic. For the research development, the approaches about graffiti that has been developed by the semiologist Bogotá citizen Armando Silva from the 1980s until now. Specifically, it is taken the valences and the imperatives, types of graffitis, broadcast-reading circuits and finally the target operation. The research is developed under a qualitative focus, taken as primary resource the gathered graffitis photographs unedited during the first semester of 2014. The collected information is obtained thanks to a template of observation that explores, through 17 questions, by valences, imperatives and types of graffiti. The analysis process is executed taking into account Silva’s paragraphs developed from several academic texts. Graffitis are grouped by themes and sub-themes and the way they are read. Evolution of white dwarfs as a probe of theories of gravitation: the case of Brans-Dicke

    Get PDF
Theories with varying gravitational constant G have long been studied. Among them, the most promising candidates as alternatives to standard general relativity are known as scalar–tensor theories. They are consistent descriptions of the observed Universe as well as the low-energy limit of several pictures of unified interactions. Thus, increasing interest in the astrophysical, gravitational wave and pulsar evolution consequences of such theories has been sparked over the last few years. In this work we study the evolution of white dwarf stars in the framework of the simplest model of scalar–tensor theory: Brans–Dicke gravity. We assume that the star is able to see the cosmological evolution of G (obtained from relativistic equations) while adopting a Newtonian model for describing its structure. This allows us to determine how the G variation affects the energetics of the stellar interior. The white dwarfs are analysed employing a well-tested computer code, with state-of-the-art data for the equation of state, opacities, neutrinos, etc.; all these characteristics are carefully described in the text. We compute the theoretical white dwarf luminosity function and use previous observational data to compare with and extract conclusions on the feasibility of the gravitational theory analysed. We find several striking results. The cooling of white dwarfs is strongly accelerated, particularly for massive stars and low luminosities, even if the Ο parameter of Brans–Dicke theory is big enough to accord well with any other test of gravitation. This uncommon cooling process translates into several distinctive features of white dwarf evolution, among which are (a) a new profile of luminosity versus fractional mass and age, (b) different central temperature versus surface luminosity, (c) low masses of progenitors, and most importantly (d) an appreciable variation in the luminosity function. We finally analyse the possibilities of, when precise data with unique interpretation are available, converting this into a powerful new test of gravitation.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y GeofísicasInstituto de Física La Plat
