This article investigates the survivorship bias and the behavior of equity mutual funds at calendar semester ends in Brazil between 2004 and 2013. Results indicate that fund performance is associated with its survivorship, but other factors may play an important role in keeping a fund in activity. Results also suggest that the sampled funds present positive abnormal returns on the last trading day of calendar semesters, followed by negative abnormal returns on the subsequent day. Funds oriented to retail investors and those that charge incentive fees are more likely to display these abnormal return behavior. There seems to be evidence of portfolio pumping.

Europium has been deemed the best lanthanide for luminescent applications, mainly due to its efficiency in sensitization, longest decay times, and the ability to use its luminescence spectra to probe the coordination geometry around the metal. The remaining lanthanides can also be of crucial importance due to their different colors, sensitivity, and capability as probes. In this manuscript, we intend to shed some light on the existing published work on the remaining lanthanides. In some cases, they appear in papers with europium, but frequently in a subordinate position, and in fewer cases then the main protagonist of the study. All of them will be assessed and presented in a concise manner; they will be divided into two main categories: lanthanide compounds dissolved in ionic liquids, and lanthanide-based ionic liquids. Finally, some analysis of future trends is carried out highlighting some future promising fields, such as ionogels.publishersversionpublishe

Pegmatite productive terrains in the Variscan Granite hosts from Northern and Central Portugal

The detection of suboutcropping pegmatite deposits in regions recognizably fertile regarding the occurrence of pegmatites depends upon the optimization of conceptual models which support the interpretation of the regional distribution of pegmatites and the structure of their assemblies. In intra-granitic context is at concern the more conventional cartographic expression of pegmatites in connection with the structuring of granitic cupolas. The establishment of occurrence situations linked to certain lithological units or structural alignments is a pathway for the delimitation of productive research areas. Some productivity situations deduced from geological mapping include: accommodation in preferred structural directions, proximity to mixing-mingling corridors, certain petrographic structuring units that reflect irregularities in terms of flow and fractionation processes, and trends of hydrothermal and supergene alteration of host granitic masses. The detection of these aspects, to regard as exploration guides, can avail itself of remote sensing, as they represent contrasting chromatic lithotypes with sufficient surface continuity.(undefined

Contributions to pegmatite exploration within granitic plutons in Central and Northern Portugal

    Get PDF
Exploration programs for granitic pegmatites face the lack of detectable contrasts, either geophysical or geochemical, between pegmatites and their granitic host-rocks. The known productive sectors bearing pegmatites located inside granitic plutons, with economic interest for quartz and feldspar provide adequate field testing for alternative research, dealing with the peculiarities of lithological diversity and the arrangement of structural elements, around pegmatite swarms at suitable granite cupolas. The most efficient assessment for pegmatite positioning in tactical stages of exploration is the use of geological factors analyzed through raw or specifically treated remote imagery, enhancing the favorable lineaments and the most productive granite-host matrixes. The identification of targets using this approach led to a reasonable success tested by experimental drilling in some selected sites

Semi-transparent polysulfone films are transformed into opaque and homogenous red films under UVA radiation (315-360 nm), while lower wavelength exposure (280-315 nm) induces increased emission detectable under dark light, with no colour modification of the film under visible light. Thermal analysis (TGA and DSC), spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR, 1H-NMR and UV-Vis), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were conducted to elucidate confinement mechanism and irradiation effects.publishersversionpublishe

Trabalho apresentado em XX IMEKO World Congress Metrology for Green Growth, 9-14 setembro de 2012, Busan, Coreia do SulThe usage of greenhouse with controlled microclimate represents an important way to increase the production of fruits and vegetables considering the plants needs and has recently become one of the hottest topics in precision agriculture. In order to know and to control the greenhouse microclimate smart sensing nodes with wireless communication capabilities represents the solution. As one of promissory protocol associated with wireless sensor network can be mentioned the ZigBee due to its low cost, low power consumption, extended ranges and architecture flexibility. In the present work a sensing and control sensing nodes with ZigBee communication capabilities are considered, while the microclimate is monitored using a set of solid state sensors for temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and CO2 concentration considering this parameters with important role in plants growing. Every sensor node uses energy from a solar cell through a battery charger circuit considering also the powering of the sensing and control node during the night periods. The data from ZigBee network nodes are sent to Wireless-Ethernet gateway connected to a computer that runs a LabVIEW application that perform primary processing and web geographic information system that provides information about the greenhouse microclimate. Elements related power harvesting for implemented wireless sensor network, as so as a set of experimental results are included in the present work.N/

SFRH/BD/135087/2017.Six trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride (P6,6,6,14Cl) based ionic liquids (IL) with dianionic fluorone derivatives were synthesized with total exchange of chloride from the dianionic dye: Fluorescein (a), Rose Bengal (b), Phloxine B (c), Eosin B (d), Eosin Y (e) and Erythrosin B (f). Spectroscopic characterization of these viscous salts indicated the presence of the expected 1 or 2 strong absorption bands. A total of 12 compounds, as sodium (from a to f) or as trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dianion salts (from a′ to f′), were used for sensitization of nanocrystalline TiO2. Here, we report the sensitization activity of these metal free dyes in terms of current-potential curve, open-circuit potential, fill factor, and overall solar energy conversion efficiency which have been evaluated under 100 mW cm-2 light intensity. We developed a strategy to improve the light harvesting of these conventional dyes by simple cationic exchange which was accompanied by a minimum of 30% increase in the cell photovoltaic conversion efficiency. Also, for Eosin B the binding to TiO2 apparently allows reduction of the-NO2 electron-withdrawing group to-NO22-. This provides a new interaction between the reduced nitro group and the TiO2 surface, reflecting an improvement in the overall DSSC performance reaching its maximum of 0.65% efficiency after light DSSC soaking. Factors that improve DSSC performance like aggregate inhibition, increment of the electrode's quasi-Fermi level and slight red shift in the absorption spectra of the tested anionic dyes were achieved by simple cationic exchange.authorsversionpublishe
