Vortex knots in light
Optical vortices generically arise when optical beams are combined. Recently, we reported how several laser beams containing optical vortices could be combined to form optical vortex loops, links and knots embedded in a light beam (Leach et al 2004 Nature 432 165). Here, we describe in detail the experiments in which vortex loops form these structures. The experimental construction follows a theoretical model originally proposed by Berry and Dennis, and the beams are synthesized using a programmable spatial light modulator and imaged using a CCD camera
Invalid party wall awards and how to avoid them
Considers the reasons for the invalidity of party wall awards. Examines decided cases under earlier party wall legislation in the context of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. Explains invalidity on the basis of an excess of the surveyors’ statutory authority. Defines this authority in terms of jurisdiction and power. Demonstrates the limits of the surveyors’ authority and emphasises the importance of strict compliance with statutory procedures. Concludes that surveyors should adopt an inquisitive and analytical approach to the scope of their authority to avoid the possibility of invalid awards. Echoes John Anstey’s earlier warning that surveyors should avoid a broad-brush approach to their duties which will only leave them “covered in soot”
Quantum correlations in position, momentum, and intermediate bases for a full optical field of view
We report an eight-element, linear-array, single-photon detector that uses multiple fibers of differing lengths coupled to a single detector, the timing information from which reveals the position in which the photon was measured. Using two such arrays and two detectors we measure the correlations of photons produced by parametric downconversion, without recourse to mechanical scanning. Spatial light modulators acting as variable focal length lenses positioned between the downconversion crystal and the arrays allow us to switch between measurement of position, transverse momentum, or intermediate bases. We observe the product of the variances of the conditional probabilities for position and momentum to be more than an order of magnitude below the classical limit, realizing a full-field demonstration of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. Such, multistate measurement technologies allow access to the higher information content of the photon based upon spatial modes

Using NORAPS for forecasting heavy precipitation with topographic forcing
Heavy precipitation events, associated with winter storm systems, frequently produce devastating flooding throughout the state of California. One of the most disastrous floods in recent years occurred in March of 1995. A storm moved through California from March 7 to 11, 1995 causing flooding in a total of 57 counties in California. the storm moved to the northwest coast of California on March 7 and started producing heavy rainfall on March 8 in northern California. Then the storm moved southward and continuously produced heavy rain as it moved through California. On March 9, a maximum of 177 mm precipitation fell in northern California and brought a maximum of 140 mm precipitation to that area on March 10. In addition to the heavy rain, heavy snow fell in the higher elevations, with snow depths exceeding 12 meters in some locations in the Sierra Nevada mountains, reported by late March. Although such storms have been a research subject for many years, some features of the California storms, such as slow movement, the mesoscale structure and orographic effects on the storm movement and structure are not well understood. Consequently, storms such as the March 1995 event, are often not well predicted. The purpose of this study is to try to improve our understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms that produce the mesoscale structure and storm movement throughout the state. A greater understanding of the physical interactions un these storms will ultimately lead to improved precipitation forecasts, including both the spatial and temporal distribution. Improved forecasts benefit society by reducing threat to life and property and to improved water resource management. We have chosen the Navy Operational Regional Atmospheric Prediction System (NORAPS) to simulate the storms and study the dynamics and physics of these storm systems
Precise quantum tomography of photon pairs with entangled orbital angular momentum
We report a high fidelity tomographic reconstruction of the quantum state of photon pairs generated by parametric down-conversion with orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement. Our tomography method allows us to estimate an upper and lower bound for the entanglement between the down-converted photons. We investigate the two-dimensional state subspace defined by the OAM states ± and superpositions thereof, with =1, 2, ..., 30. We find that the reconstructed density matrix, even for OAMs up to around =20, is close to that of a maximally entangled Bell state with a fidelity in the range between F=0.979 and F=0.814. This demonstrates that, although the single count-rate diminishes with increasing , entanglement persists in a large dimensional state space
Constructing 3D crystal templates for photonic band gap materials using holographic optical tweezers
A simple and robust method is presented for the construction of 3-dimensional crystals from silica and polystyrene microspheres. The crystals are suitable for use as templates in the production of three-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) materials. Manipulation of the microspheres was achieved using a dynamic holographic assembler (DHA) consisting of computer controlled holographic optical tweezers. Attachment of the microspheres was achieved by adjusting their colloidal interactions during assembly. The method is demonstrated by constructing a variety of 3-dimensional crystals using spheres ranging in size from 3 µm down to 800 nm. A major advantage of the technique is that it may be used to build structures that cannot be made using self-assembly. This is illustrated through the construction of crystals in which line defects have been deliberately included, and by building simple cubic structures
Bounds and optimisation of orbital angular momentum bandwidths within parametric down-conversion systems
The measurement of high-dimensional entangled states of orbital angular
momentum prepared by spontaneous parametric down-conversion can be considered
in two separate stages: a generation stage and a detection stage. Given a
certain number of generated modes, the number of measured modes is determined
by the measurement apparatus. We derive a simple relationship between the

Randomized controlled field trial comparing quarter and cow level selective dry cow treatment using the California Mastitis Test
Selective use of antibiotic dry cow treatment can be implemented at the cow or quarter level, with the latter having the potential to further reduce antibiotic use. Our objective was to compare these 2 approaches in 6 herds in the United Kingdom in which environmental mastitis predominated. Eight hundred seven cows were enrolled and categorized as having a high cell count (n = 401) or low cell count (n = 406) in the last 3 mo of lactation and clinical mastitis history. All quarters of all enrolled cows received an internal teat sealant. Within each category, cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups; in one group antibiotic treatment was allocated at cow level (i.e., all 4 quarters received antibiotic), whereas in the 2 remaining groups antibiotic treatment was allocated at quarter level, based on California Mastitis Test (CMT) findings. Two different thresholds, score 1 and 2, were used to determine likely infection status. Quarter milk samples were collected at dry off and postcalving for bacteriological culture and somatic cell count (SCC). Cows were monitored for clinical mastitis from dry off until 100 d in milk. Cow level SCC and milk yield data were collated from farm records. Within each category, the 2 quarter level treatment groups were compared with cow level treatment at dry off.
