Magneto-shear modes and a.c. dissipation in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal
The a.c. response of an unpinned and finite 2D Wigner crystal to electric
fields at an angular frequency has been calculated in the dissipative
limit, , where is the scattering rate. For
electrons screened by parallel electrodes, in zero magnetic field the
long-wavelength excitations are a diffusive longitudinal transmission line mode
and a diffusive shear mode. A magnetic field couples these modes together to
form two new magneto-shear modes. The dimensionless coupling parameter where and are the
speeds of transverse and longitudinal sound in the collisionless limit and
and are the tensor components of the
magnetoconductivity. For , both the coupled modes contribute
to the response of 2D electrons in a Corbino disk measurement of
magnetoconductivity. For , the electron crystal rotates rigidly in
a magnetic field. In general, both the amplitude and phase of the measured a.c.
currents are changed by the shear modulus. In principle, both the

An introduction to the spectrum, symmetries, and dynamics of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains
Quantum spin chains are prototype quantum many-body systems. They are
employed in the description of various complex physical phenomena. The goal of
this paper is to provide an introduction to the subject by focusing on the time
evolution of a Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain and interpreting the results based on
the analysis of the eigenvalues, eigenstates, and symmetries of the system. We
make available online all computer codes used to obtain our data.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
3C 295, a cluster and its cooling flow at z=0.46
We present ROSAT HRI data of the distant and X-ray luminous (L_x(bol)=2.6^
{+0.4}_{-0.2} 10^{45}erg/sec) cluster of galaxies 3C 295. We fit both a
one-dimensional and a two-dimensional isothermal beta-model to the data, the
latter one taking into account the effects of the point spread function (PSF).
For the error analysis of the parameters of the two-dimensional model we
introduce a Monte-Carlo technique. Applying a substructure analysis, by
subtracting a cluster model from the data, we find no evidence for a merger,
but we see a decrement in emission South-East of the center of the cluster,
which might be due to absorption. We confirm previous results by Henry &
Henriksen(1986) that 3C 295 hosts a cooling flow. The equations for the simple
and idealized cooling flow analysis presented here are solely based on the
isothermal beta-model, which fits the data very well, including the center of
the cluster. We determine a cooling flow radius of 60-120kpc and mass accretion
rates of dot{M}=400-900 Msun/y, depending on the applied model and temperature
profile. We also investigate the effects of the ROSAT PSF on our estimate of
dot{M}, which tends to lead to a small overestimate of this quantity if not
taken into account. This increase of dot{M} (10-25%) can be explained by a
shallower gravitational potential inferred by the broader overall profile
caused by the PSF, which diminishes the efficiency of mass accretion. We also
determine the total mass of the cluster using the hydrostatic approach. At a
radius of 2.1 Mpc, we estimate the total mass of the cluster (M{tot}) to be
(9.2 +/- 2.7) 10^{14}Msun. For the gas to total mass ratio we get M{gas}/M{tot}
=0.17-0.31, in very good agreement with the results for other clusters of

On the Classification of UGC1382 as a Giant Low Surface Brightness Galaxy
We provide evidence that UGC1382, long believed to be a passive elliptical
galaxy, is actually a giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxy which rivals
the archetypical GLSB Malin 1 in size. Like other GLSB galaxies, it has two
components: a high surface brightness disk galaxy surrounded by an extended low
surface brightness (LSB) disk. For UGC1382, the central component is a
lenticular system with an effective radius of 6 kpc. Beyond this, the LSB disk
has an effective radius of ~38 kpc and an extrapolated central surface
brightness of ~26 mag/arcsec^2. Both components have a combined stellar mass of
~8x10^10 M_sun, and are embedded in a massive (10^10 M_sun) low-density (<3
M_sun/pc^2) HI disk with a radius of 110 kpc, making this one of the largest
isolated disk galaxies known. The system resides in a massive dark matter halo
of at least 2x10^12 M_sun. Although possibly part of a small group, its low
density environment likely plays a role in the formation and retention of the
giant LSB and HI disks. We model the spectral energy distributions and find
that the LSB disk is likely older than the lenticular component. UGC1382 has
UV-optical colors typical of galaxies transitioning through the green valley.
Within the LSB disk are spiral arms forming stars at extremely low
efficiencies. The gas depletion time scale of ~10^11 yr suggests that UGC1382
may be a very long term resident of the green valley. We find that the
formation and evolution of the LSB disk is best explained by the accretion of

Supervision and Scholarly Writing: Writing to Learn - Learning to Write
This paper describes an action research project on postgraduate students’ scholarly writing in which I employed reflective approaches to examine and enhance my postgraduate supervisory practice. My reflections on three distinct cycles of supervision illustrate a shift in thinking about scholarly writing and an evolving understanding of how to support postgraduate students’ writing. These understandings provide the foundation for a future-oriented fourth cycle of supervisory practice, which is characterised by three principles, namely the empowerment of students as writers, the technological context of contemporary writing, and ethical issues in writing
Computation of microdosimetric distributions for small sites
Object of this study is the computation of microdosimetric functions for sites which are too small to permit experimental determination of the distributions by Rossi-counters. The calculations are performed on simulated tracks generated by Monte-Carlo techniques.
The first part of the article deals with the computational procedure. The second part presents numerical results for protons of energies 0.5, 5, 20 MeV and for site diameters of 5, 10, 100 nm
Bluetooth Tracking Approach For User Assistance Based In Sequential Patterns Analysis.
As a civilization, we are drowning in a raging torrent of data, of our own making, that is being harvested by our collective technologies and systems (e.g. Fitbit, phones). However, data itself is of no utility unless it is converted into beneficial knowledge. Design patterns have been shown to be a pragmatic solution to control and manage information flows and provide order and mean-ing to data within a given context. Assisting users within their daily activities has become a key aspect for modern Artificial Intelligence Systems. Neverthe-less, although the GPS technologies work well for outside location, indoor posi-tioning is still problematic, while is a vital awareness component in ambient as-sistance. This paper shows a preliminary Bluetooth tracking system with a focus on the user’s transition between areas of interest. Our work aims to shed light on how the term design patterns can be applied for studying human behavior patterns in the smart environment
On the statistical evaluation of dose-response functions
The linear-quadratic dependence of effect on the dose of ionizing radiation and its biophysical implications are considered. The estimation of the parameters of the response function and the derivation of the joint confidence region of the estimates are described. The method is applied to the induction of pink mutations inTradescantia which follows the linear-quadratic model. The statistical procedure is also suitable for other response functions
