Antibiotic treatment triggers gut dysbiosis and modulates metabolism in a chicken model of gastro-intestinal infection
Background: Infection of the digestive track by gastro-intestinal pathogens results in the development of symptoms ranging from mild diarrhea to more severe clinical signs such as dysentery, severe dehydration and potentially death. Although, antibiotics are efficient to tackle infections, they also trigger dysbiosis that has been suggested to result in variation in weight gain in animal production systems. Results: Here is the first study demonstrating the metabolic impact of infection by a gastro-intestinal pathogen (Brachyspira pilosicoli) and its resolution by antibiotic treatment (tiamulin) on the host (chicken) systemic metabolism and gut microbiota composition using high-resolution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and 16S rDNA next generation sequencing (NGS). Clear systemic metabolic markers of infections such as glycerol and betaine were identified. Weight loss in untreated animals was in part explained by the observation of a modification of systemic host energy metabolism characterized by the utilization of glycerol as a glucose precursor. However, antibiotic treatment triggered an increased VLDL/HDL ratio in plasma that may contribute to reducing weight loss observed in treated birds. All metabolic responses co-occurred with significant shift of the microbiota upon infection or antibiotic treatment. Conclusion: This study indicates that infection and antibiotic treatment trigger dysbiosis that may impact host systemic energy metabolism and cause phenotypic and health modifications
Macrodimers: ultralong range Rydberg molecules
We study long range interactions between two Rydberg atoms and predict the
existence of ultralong range Rydberg dimers with equilibrium distances of many
thousand Bohr radii. We calculate the dispersion coefficients ,
and for two rubidium atoms in the same excited level , and find
that they scale like , and , respectively. We show that
for certain molecular symmetries, these coefficients lead to long range
potential wells that can support molecular bound levels. Such macrodimers would
be very sensitive to their environment, and could probe weak interactions. We
suggest experiments to detect these macrodimers.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to PR
Spatiotemporal communication with synchronized optical chaos
We propose a model system that allows communication of spatiotemporal
information using an optical chaotic carrier waveform. The system is based on
broad-area nonlinear optical ring cavities, which exhibit spatiotemporal chaos
in a wide parameter range. Message recovery is possible through chaotic
synchronization between transmitter and receiver. Numerical simulations
demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the benefit of the
parallelism of information transfer with optical wavefronts.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Organics in comet 67P – a first comparative analysis of mass spectra from ROSINA–DFMS, COSAC and Ptolemy
The ESA Rosetta spacecraft followed comet 67P at a close distance for more than 2 yr. In addition, it deployed the lander Philae on to the surface of the comet. The (surface) composition of the comet is of great interest to understand the origin and evolution of comets. By combining measurements made on the comet itself and in the coma, we probe the nature of this surface material and compare it to remote sensing observations. We compare data from the double focusing mass spectrometer (DFMS) of the ROSINA experiment on ESA's Rosetta mission and previously published data from the two mass spectrometers COSAC (COmetary Sampling And Composition) and Ptolemy on the lander. The mass spectra of all three instruments show very similar patterns of mainly CHO-bearing molecules that sublimate at temperatures of 275 K. The DFMS data also show a great variety of CH-, CHN-, CHS-, CHO2- and CHNO-bearing saturated and unsaturated species. Methyl isocyanate, propanal and glycol aldehyde suggested by the earlier analysis of the measured COSAC spectrum could not be confirmed. The presence of polyoxymethylene in the Ptolemy spectrum was found to be unlikely. However, the signature of the aromatic compound toluene was identified in DFMS and Ptolemy data. Comparison with remote sensing instruments confirms the complex nature of the organics on the surface of 67P, which is much more diverse than anticipated

Feedback Control of the National Airspace System
This paper proposes a general modeling framework adapted to the feedback control of traffic flows in Eulerian
models of the National Airspace System. It is shown that the problems of scheduling and routing aircraft flows in the
National Airspace System can be posed as the control of a network of queues with load-dependent service rates. Focus
can then shift to developing techniques to ensure that the aircraft queues in each airspace sector, which are an
indicator of the air traffic controller workloads, are kept small. This paper uses the proposed framework to develop
control laws that help prepare the National Airspace System for fast recovery from a weather event, given a
probabilistic forecast of capacities. In particular, the model includes the management of airport arrivals and

Mathematical Properties of a New Levin-Type Sequence Transformation Introduced by \v{C}\'{\i}\v{z}ek, Zamastil, and Sk\'{a}la. I. Algebraic Theory

- 968 (2003)] introduced in connection with the summation of the divergent
perturbation expansion of the hydrogen atom in an external magnetic field a new
sequence transformation which uses as input data not only the elements of a
sequence of partial sums, but also explicit estimates
for the truncation errors. The explicit
incorporation of the information contained in the truncation error estimates
makes this and related transformations potentially much more powerful than for
instance Pad\'{e} approximants. Special cases of the new transformation are
sequence transformations introduced by Levin [Int. J. Comput. Math. B
\textbf{3}, 371 - 388 (1973)] and Weniger [Comput. Phys. Rep. \textbf{10}, 189
- 371 (1989), Sections 7 -9; Numer. Algor. \textbf{3}, 477 - 486 (1992)] and
also a variant of Richardson extrapolation [Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. London A

Yersinia pestis Lineages in Mongolia
BACKGROUND: Whole genome sequencing allowed the development of a number of high resolution sequence based typing tools for Yersinia (Y.) pestis. The application of these methods on isolates from most known foci worldwide and in particular from China and the Former Soviet Union has dramatically improved our understanding of the population structure of this species. In the current view, Y. pestis including the non or moderate human pathogen Y. pestis subspecies microtus emerged from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis about 2,600 to 28,600 years ago in central Asia. The majority of central Asia natural foci have been investigated. However these investigations included only few strains from Mongolia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Prokaryotic Repeats (CRISPR) analysis and Multiple-locus variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) with 25 loci was performed on 100 Y. pestis strains, isolated from 37 sampling areas in Mongolia. The resulting data were compared with previously published data from more than 500 plague strains, 130 of which had also been previously genotyped by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis. The comparison revealed six main clusters including the three microtus biovars Ulegeica, Altaica, and Xilingolensis. The largest cluster comprises 78 isolates, with unique and new genotypes seen so far in Mongolia only. Typing of selected isolates by key SNPs was used to robustly assign the corresponding clusters to previously defined SNP branches. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We show that Mongolia hosts the most recent microtus clade (Ulegeica). Interestingly no representatives of the ancestral Y. pestis subspecies pestis nodes previously identified in North-western China were identified in this study. This observation suggests that the subsequent evolution steps within Y. pestis pestis did not occur in Mongolia. Rather, Mongolia was most likely re-colonized by more recent clades coming back from China contemporary of the black death pandemic, or more recently in the past 600 years
Genome wide analysis of gene expression changes in skin from patients with type 2 diabetes
Non-healing chronic ulcers are a serious complication of diabetes and are a major healthcare problem. While a host of treatments have been explored to heal or prevent these ulcers from forming, these treatments have not been found to be consistently effective in clinical trials. An understanding of the changes in gene expression in the skin of diabetic patients may provide insight into the processes and mechanisms that precede the formation of non-healing ulcers. In this study, we investigated genome wide changes in gene expression in skin between patients with type 2 diabetes and non-diabetic patients using next generation sequencing. We compared the gene expression in skin samples taken from 27 patients (13 with type 2 diabetes and 14 non-diabetic). This information may be useful in identifying the causal factors and potential therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of diabetic related diseases
