    CAD and creativity: does the computer really help?

    We are frequently told by its exponents that computeraided design (CAD) liberates designers and gives them new ways of envisioning their work, but is this really true? CAD in architecture is examined to see to what extent it has enhanced creativity in design. This is partly done by applying a test of creativity advanced by contemporary architect Herman Hertzberger. In this analysis, CAD is found somewhat wanting, and some suggestions are made as to why this might be so

    Efficient operation of a high-power X-band gyroklystron

    Experimental studies of amplification in a two-cavity X-band gyroklystron are reported. The system utilizes a thermionic magnetron injection gun at voltages up to 440 kV and currents up to 190 A in 1-ÎĽs pulses. Optimum performance is achieved by tapering the magnetic-field profile. Peak powers of 20 MW in the TE01 mode at 9.87 GHz are measured with calibrated crystals and with methanol calorimetry. Resultant efficiencies are in excess of 31% and large-signal gains surpass 26 dB. The experimental results are in good agreement with simulated results from a partially self-consistent, nonlinear, steady-state code

    On SpincSpin^c manifolds, we study the Energy-Momentum tensor associated with a spinor field. First, we give a spinorial Gauss type formula for oriented hypersurfaces of a SpincSpin^c manifold. Using the notion of generalized cylinders, we derive the variationnal formula for the Dirac operator under metric deformation and point out that the Energy-Momentum tensor appears naturally as the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion.     We study the emergence of Dirac fermionic field in the low energy description of non-relativistic dynamical models on graphs admitting continuum limit. The Dirac fermionic field appears as the effective field describing the excitations above point-like Fermi surface. Together with the Dirac fermionic field an effective space-time metric is also emerging.     A deep photometric survey of the eta Chamaeleontis cluster down to the brown dwarf - planet boundary

    We report the outcome of the deep optical/infrared photometric survey of the central region (33 X 33 arcmin or 0.9 pc^2) of the eta Chamaeleontis pre-main sequence star cluster. The completeness limits of the photometry are I = 19.1, J = 18.2 and H = 17.6; faint enough to reveal low mass members down to the brown dwarf and planet boundary of ~ 13 M_Jup. We found no such low mass members in this region. Our result combined with a previous shallower (I = 17) but larger area survey indicates that low mass objects (0.013 < M/M(solar mass) < 0.075) either were not created in the eta Cha cluster or were lost due to the early dynamical history of the cluster and ejected to outside the surveyed areas.Comment: 5 pages with 4 figures, accepted by MNRA

    We study CKT (or bi-HKT) N = 4 supersymmetric quantum mechanical sigma models. They are characterized by the usual and the mirror sectors displaying each HKT geometry. When the metric involves isometries, a Hamiltonian reduction is possible. The most natural such reduction with respect to a half of bosonic target space coordinates produces an N = 4 model, related to the twisted Kaehler model due to Gates, Hull and Rocek, but including certain extra F-terms in the superfield action.Comment: 31 pages, minor corrections in the published versio

    High-power operation of a K-band second harmonic gyroklystron

    Amplification studies of a two-cavity second-harmonic gyroklystron are reported. A magnetron injection gun produces a 440 kV, 200–245 A, 1 μs beam with an average perpendicular-to-parallel velocity ratio slightly less than 1. The TE011 input cavity is driven near 9.88 GHz and the TE021 output cavity resonates near 19.76 GHz. Peak powers exceeding 21 MW are achieved with an efficiency near 21% and a large signal gain above 25 dB. This performance represents the current state of the art for gyroklystrons in terms of the peak power normalized to the output wavelength squared

    We report the first experimental verification of a gyrotwistron amplifier. The device utilized a single 9.858 GHz, TE011 cavity, a heavily attenuated drift tube, and a long tapered output waveguide section. With a 440 kV, 200-245 A, 1 ÎĽs electron beam and a sharply tapered axial magnetic field, peak powers above 21 MW were achieved with a gain near 24 dB. Performance was limited by competition from a fundamental TE11 mode. A multimode code was developed to analyze this system, and simulations were in good agreement with the experiment

    Information system support in construction industry with semantic web technologies and/or autonomous reasoning agents

    Information technology support is hard to find for the early design phases of the architectural design process. Many of the existing issues in such design decision support tools appear to be caused by a mismatch between the ways in which designers think and the ways in which information systems aim to give support. We therefore started an investigation of existing theories of design thinking, compared to the way in which design decision support systems provide information to the designer. We identify two main strategies towards information system support in the early design phase: (1) applications for making design try-outs, and (2) applications as autonomous reasoning agents. We outline preview implementations for both approaches and indicate to what extent these strategies can be used to improve information system support for the architectural designer
