Supplementing feedlot steers and heifers with Zilmax increases proportions of strip loin, chuck clod, and top sirloin steaks exceeding Warner-Bratzler shear force thresholds, whereas aging moderates this effect
Ractopamine hydrochloride (Elanco, Greenfield, IN) and Zilmax (zilpaterol hydrochloride; Intervet/Schering-Plough, Millsboro, DE) are β-adrenergic agonists approved in the United States and several other countries to increase growth rate, improve efficiency of feed utilization, and increase carcass meat yield. Zilmax has been shown to improve feed efficiency by 26% and increase hot carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, and meat yield. However, a few studies have shown that Zilmax significantly increased Warner-Bratzler shear force values (decreased tenderness). The objectives of our research were to determine the effects of supplementing feedlot diets of steers and heifers with Zilmax for 0, 20, 30, or 40 days before harvest and the subsequent effects of 7, 14, and 21 days of aging on tenderness of steer and heifer Longissimus lumborum (from strip loins) and heifer Triceps brachii (from chuck clods) and Gluteus medius (from top sirloin butts) muscles
Tsallis non-extensive statistics, intermittent turbulence, SOC and chaos in the solar plasma. Part one: Sunspot dynamics
In this study, the nonlinear analysis of the sunspot index is embedded in the
non-extensive statistical theory of Tsallis. The triplet of Tsallis, as well as
the correlation dimension and the Lyapunov exponent spectrum were estimated for
the SVD components of the sunspot index timeseries. Also the multifractal
scaling exponent spectrum, the generalized Renyi dimension spectrum and the
spectrum of the structure function exponents were estimated experimentally and
theoretically by using the entropy principle included in Tsallis non extensive
statistical theory, following Arimitsu and Arimitsu. Our analysis showed
clearly the following: a) a phase transition process in the solar dynamics from
high dimensional non Gaussian SOC state to a low dimensional non Gaussian
chaotic state, b) strong intermittent solar turbulence and anomalous
(multifractal) diffusion solar process, which is strengthened as the solar
dynamics makes phase transition to low dimensional chaos in accordance to
Ruzmaikin, Zeleny and Milovanov studies c) faithful agreement of Tsallis non
equilibrium statistical theory with the experimental estimations of i)
non-Gaussian probability distribution function, ii) multifractal scaling
exponent spectrum and generalized Renyi dimension spectrum, iii) exponent
spectrum of the structure functions estimated for the sunspot index and its
underlying non equilibrium solar dynamics.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figure
Slogging and Stumbling Toward Social Justice in a Private Elementary School: The Complicated Case of St. Malachy
This case study examines St. Malachy, an urban Catholic elementary school primarily serving children traditionally marginalized by race, class, linguistic heritage, and disability. As a private school, St. Malachy serves the public good by recruiting and retaining such traditionally marginalized students. As empirical studies involving Catholic schools frequently juxtapose them with public schools, the author presents this examination from a different tack. Neither vilifying nor glorifying Catholic schooling, this study critically examines the pursuit of social justice in this school context. Data gathered through a 1-year study show that formal and informal leaders in St. Malachy adapted their governance, aggressively sought community resources, and focused their professional development to build the capacity to serve their increasingly pluralistic student population. The analysis confirms the deepening realization that striving toward social justice is a messy, contradictory, and complicated pursuit, and that schools in both public and private sectors are allies in this pursuit
The First Magnetic Fields
We review current ideas on the origin of galactic and extragalactic magnetic
fields. We begin by summarizing observations of magnetic fields at cosmological
redshifts and on cosmological scales. These observations translate into
constraints on the strength and scale magnetic fields must have during the
early stages of galaxy formation in order to seed the galactic dynamo. We
examine mechanisms for the generation of magnetic fields that operate prior
during inflation and during subsequent phase transitions such as electroweak
symmetry breaking and the quark-hadron phase transition. The implications of
strong primordial magnetic fields for the reionization epoch as well as the
first generation of stars is discussed in detail. The exotic, early-Universe
mechanisms are contrasted with astrophysical processes that generate fields
after recombination. For example, a Biermann-type battery can operate in a
proto-galaxy during the early stages of structure formation. Moreover, magnetic
fields in either an early generation of stars or active galactic nuclei can be

The INtegrated CAtchment model of phosphorus dynamics (INCA-P): description and demonstration of new model structure and equations
INCA-P is a dynamic, catchment-scale phosphorus model which has been widely applied during the last decade. Since its original release in 2002, the model structure and equations have been significantly altered during several development phases. Here, we provide the first full model description since 2002 and then test the latest version of the model (v1.4.4) in a small rural catchment in northeast Scotland. The particulate phosphorus simulation was much improved compared to previous model versions, whilst the latest sorption equations allowed us to explore the potential time lags between reductions in terrestrial inputs and improvements in surface water quality, an issue of key policy relevance. The model is particularly suitable for use as a research tool, but should only be used to inform policy and land management in data-rich areas, where parameters and processes can be well-constrained. More long-term data is needed to parameterise dynamic models and test their predictions

Search for R-parity Violating Decays of Supersymmetric Particles in Collisions at LEP
A search, in collisions, for chargino, neutralino, scalar lepton and scalar quark pair-production is performed, without assuming R-parity conservation in decays, in the case that only one of the coupling constants or is non-negligible. No signal is found in data up to a centre-of-mass energy of 208 \GeV. Limits on the production cross sections and on the masses of supersymmetric particles are derived.A search, in e + e − collisions, for chargino, neutralino, scalar lepton and scalar quark pair-production is performed, without assuming R-parity conservation in decays, in the case that only one of the coupling constants λ or λ ″ is non-negligible. No signal is found in data up to a centre-of-mass energy of 208 GeV. Planck early results. XV. Spectral energy distributions and radio continuum spectra of northern extragalactic radio sources
Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and radio continuum spectra are presented for a northern sample of 104 extragalactic radio sources, based
on the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) and simultaneous multifrequency data. The nine Planck frequencies, from 30
to 857 GHz, are complemented by a set of simultaneous observations ranging from radio to gamma-rays. This is the first extensive frequency
coverage in the radio and millimetre domains for an essentially complete sample of extragalactic radio sources, and it shows how the individual
shocks, each in their own phase of development, shape the radio spectra as they move in the relativistic jet. The SEDs presented in this paper
were fitted with second and third degree polynomials to estimate the frequencies of the synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) peaks, and the
spectral indices of low and high frequency radio data, including the Planck ERCSC data, were calculated. SED modelling methods are discussed,
with an emphasis on proper, physical modelling of the synchrotron bump using multiple components. Planck ERCSC data also suggest that the
original accelerated electron energy spectrum could be much harder than commonly thought, with power-law index around 1.5 instead of the
canonical 2.5. The implications of this are discussed for the acceleration mechanisms effective in blazar shocks. Furthermore in many cases the
Planck data indicate that gamma-ray emission must originate in the same shocks that produce the radio emission
