Exploring the implications of cryptocurrencies in selected developing countries

Get PDF
There is great controversy about how developing countries should approach cryptocurrency regulation. China and certain countries in the Middle East have passed strict regulations banning decentralized virtual currencies due to worries about fraud and religious reasons. In contrast, in September 2021 and April 2022, respectively, El Salvador and the Central African Republic (CAR) have been placed under international scrutiny for their decisions to make Bitcoin legal tender. A shared motivation behind both decisions includes boosting economic growth through increased foreign investment and tourism and decreased dependence on traditional central banks. However, Bitcoin volatility raises concern about its ability to perform as a currency and motivate risky financial decisions within vulnerable populations. Additionally, limited internet penetration in El Salvador and the CAR leads to apprehension about exasperated socioeconomic inequalities that will emerge under a decentralized financial system. The future of crypto in the developing world is a complex and dynamic topic that can set the stage for how individuals, organizations, and governments make critical financial decisions in the coming years

Octavia Estelle Butler can be considered a visionary writer from many perspectives. The prominent science and speculative fiction writer is known for her afrofuturistic tropes. Her novels reflect relevance in today’s scenario in myriad ways. Clay’s Ark (1984) is a part of the Patternist Series. In this novel, Butler envisioned a humanity plagued by an alien microbe from another star named Proxima Centauri. The novel traces the spread of the pandemic caused by the Clay’s Ark microbe resulting in hybrid children who mix human and animal characteristics. Butler chose the trope of the alien microbe in a very different yet believable way. The hybrid children are the next stage of evolution in Butler’s Patternists world. The aim of this paper is to explore the hybrid identities caused by the pandemic in Octavia Butler’s Clay’s Ark through the lens of biopolitics of difference and to reflect on the metaphorical significance of the same

Get PDF
Design of control strategies for Distributed generation systems is very important to achieve smoother transition between the grid connected and islanding modes of operation. The transition between these two modes of operation should be seamless, without any severe transients during the changeover. In this paper, two different control strategies namely inverter output current control and indirect grid current control for the seamless transfer between the modes of operation has been explored for the suitability. The design and analysis of the cascaded control loops based on Proportional Integral (PI) controller has been dealt in detail for both inverter output current control and indirect grid current control strategy. Control parameters are designed using the control system toolbox in MATLAB. A 10kW grid connected microgrid system has been designed and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and the results are presented under grid connected operation, islanding operation and the transition between the modes considering fault condition in the grid side. The simulation studies are carried out using both the control strategies and the results are presented to validate the design methodology

Background: The current study was aimed to compare histopathological findings of endometrial aspiration biopsy by pipelle with endometrial biopsy obtained by dilatation and curettage. Methods: 82 women attending to gynaec OPD with complaint of AUB were selected as cases. First pipelle aspiration biopsy was done was before cervical dilatation and followed by D&C. Histopathology report of pipelle sample was compared with D&C sample. Results: There In the present study, menorrhagia was the most common bleeding pattern 43 (52.4%). In pipelle aspiration biopsy group, endometrial hyperplasia was reported in 42.6% of patients, secretory endometrium in 14.6% of patients, proliferative endometrium in 32.9 % of patients, atrophic endometrium in 6 % of patients and malignancy in 3.6 % of patients. In D&C group, 39 (47.5%) of patients had endometrial hyperplasia followed by proliferative endometrium in 24 (29.3%) of patients, secretory endometrium in 14.6 % of patients, atrophic endometrium in 4.8% of patients and malignancy in 3.6 % of patients. In D&C group, 39 patients had hyperplasia. Among them, 24 patients (61.5%) had simple hyperplasia, 11 patients (28.2%) had complex hyperplasia, 4 patients (10.2%) had atypical hyperplasia. In pipelle aspiration biopsy group, 35 patients had endometrial hyperplasia. Among them, 20 patients (57.1%) had simple hyperplasia, 11 patients (31.4%) had complex hyperplasia, 4 patients (11.4%) had atypical hyperplasia. Out of 82 cases, D & C diagnosed 46 cases as abnormal endometrium and pipelle aspiration diagnosed only 43 as abnormal endometrium. Regarding abnormal endometrium, there was a correlation in pipelle aspiration group and D&C group. Both show substantial agreement between the studies. Pipelle aspiration also has high sensitivity and negative predictive value of 93.47% and 92.3% respectively in diagnosing abnormal endometrium. In 46 patients who had endometrial pathology, pipelle aspiration biopsy diagnosed correctly in 42 patients. 4 cases of hyperplasia were wrongly diagnosed as proliferative endometrium in 3 cases, and in 1case as atrophic endometrium. Pipelle sampling has diagnosed all cases of malignancy, atrophy and secretory endometrium correctly. Pipelle aspiration also has high sensitivity and negative predictive value of 89.7% and 91.4% respectively in diagnosing hyperplastic endometrium. Conclusions: Hence pipelle aspiration biopsy is an alternative to traditional D& C in diagnosing endometrial pathology which is safer and quick

Get PDF
The aim of this work was to identify metabolic differences and hormonal profiles in jasmine flower (Jasminum sambac) and to investigate the possibility that experimental promotion of retardation of the senescence of jasmine flower may mediated by abscisic acid (ABA) and phenolic content. Determinations of ABA and phenols were made in flower senescing under different conditions using two different packaging materials such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) of 200 gauge micron thickness with no ventilation. Pre-treatment of 4 % boric acid for jasmine flowers was selected. Abscisic acid levels in petals also increased during senescence 91.27 pmol g-1, but much less in boric acid-treated jasmine flower 34.16 pmol g-1. However, the lowest content of total phenolics was measured in buds and partially opened flowers 50.90 μg/g but highest in fully opened 61.80 μg/g on the fourth day of storage, respectively. It was concluded that boric acid prevented the early rise in ethylene production and considerably improved jasmine flower shelf-life

Get PDF
Diclofenac sodium (DF) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that possesses antipyretic, analgesic, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities. Like other NSAIDs, DF is known to be associated with renal, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal complications. The present study was carried out to evaluate the adverse effects of DF in vivo in wistar albino rats and to assess if oral administration of the organic osmolyte betaine mitigates the adverse effect of DF. Eighteen male Wistar rats were divided into three groups, one group of animals was fed orally with 20 mg/kg of DF once/day, and the other group received a combination of 20 mg/kg of DF and 30 mg/kg of betaine, once/day. Apart from the hematological and biochemical parameters, histopathological changes in the liver, lungs, brain, heart and kidney were also investigated. Histopathological alterations that were found in the liver, kidney, and lungs of DF-treated animals were found to be minimal or absent in DF + betaine-treated animals, as compared to untreated control. The results showed that betaine mitigates the adverse effects associated with DF treatment
