Educators Must Be Advocates: Advocating for Muslim Students
As educators interested in supporting linguistically and culturally diverse learners, we have had to view our roles in different ways since the presidential campaign and the election of Trump. In this article, two teacher educators and two inservice ESL teachers in the U.S. reflect on our various experiences working with Muslim students and preparing teachers to support Muslim students in the current socio-political context. We discuss these experiences with the goal of suggesting some priorities in teacher education. Ultimately, to prepare teachers to be effective teachers for Muslim students requires them to go beyond being culturally responsive to becoming advocates and activists. This advocacy and activism necessitates a push against the cultural norms of Whiteness that dominate U.S. teacher education
âBuild a Bridge So You Can Cross It:â A Photo-Elicitation Study of Health and Wellness Among Homeless and Marginally Housed Veterans
As part of a photo-elicitation interview study, we aimed to describe homeless and marginally housed Veteransâ experiences with health and wellness, health decisions, and health-related behaviors. Twenty Veterans receiving Veterans Affairs Homeless Patient-Aligned Care Team care took photographs depicting health and wellness, then used their photographs to discuss the same topics in 30-60 minute audio-recorded, semi-structured photo-elicitation interviews. Transcripts were analyzed using template analysis. Veterans described eight dimensions related to their health and wellness; physical, social, and environmental were most commonly discussed, followed by emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, and financial wellness. Photographs contained literal and metaphorical depictions that were positively-oriented, comprehensive, and reflective. Of central importance was overcoming external and internal obstacles to wellness. Photo-narratives may be helpful in educating health care providers and advocating for the needs of homeless and marginally housed Veterans. Integrated primary care services should address the multi-faceted aspects of health and wellness for Veterans
Logistical Lessons Learned in Designing and Executing a Photo-Elicitation Study in the Veterans Health Administration
Participatory photography research methods have been used to successfully engage and collect in-depth information from individuals whose voices have been traditionally marginalized in clinical or research arenas. However, participatory photography methods can introduce unique challenges and considerations regarding study design, human subject protections, and other regulatory barriers, particularly with vulnerable patient populations and in highly regulated institutions. Practical guidance on navigating these complex, interrelated methodological, logistical, and ethical issues is limited. Using a case exemplar, we describe our experiences with the planning, refinement, and initiation of a research study that used photo-elicitation interviews to assess the healthcare experiences of homeless and marginally housed United States Veterans. We discuss practical issues and recommendations related to study design, logistical âpitfallsâ during study execution, and ensuring human subjects protections in the context of a study with a highly vulnerable patient population taking place in a highly risk-averse research environment
Comparative study of the dynamics of laser and acoustically generated bubbles in viscoelastic media
Experimental observations of the growth and collapse of acoustically and laser-nucleated single bubbles in water and agarose gels of varying stiffness are presented. The maximum radii of generated bubbles decreased as the stiffness of the media increased for both nucleation modalities, but the maximum radii of laser-nucleated bubbles decreased more rapidly than acoustically nucleated bubbles as the gel stiffness increased. For water and low stiffness gels, the collapse times were well predicted by a Rayleigh cavity, but bubbles collapsed faster than predicted in the higher stiffness gels. The growth and collapse phases occurred symmetrically (in time) about the maximum radius in water but not in gels, where the duration of the growth phase decreased more than the collapse phase as gel stiffness increased. Numerical simulations of the bubble dynamics in viscoelastic media showed varying degrees of success in accurately predicting the observations
Homeless and marginally housed Veteran perspectives on participating in a photo-elicitation research study
Photo-elicitation interviewing (PEI) seems a valuable tool for engaging marginalized populations in research despite documented challenges. Given limited data on acceptability of PEI among homeless and marginally housed Veterans, this evaluation aimed to characterize their research experience. Veterans took photographs about health, health behaviors, and health care which facilitated semi-structured interviews. Their research study experience was assessed via a modified Reactions to Research Participation Questionnaire-Revised (RRPQ-R), along with additional survey and open-ended questions. Of the 20 participants who consented and participated, 16 (80%) completed the exit surveys. Most participants (\u3e88%) indicated favorable experiences and limited drawbacks. Respondents disagreed that participation was difficult or overly time consuming. Many indicated intense or unexpected emotionality. Open-ended responses indicated appreciation of photography, interview experiences, and connection with study staff. Transportation was the most cited barrier. Overall, experiences were reportedly emotionally challenging, but positive. PEI appears to be acceptable to homeless and marginally housed Veterans for eliciting their perspectives

Characterization of subsurface media from locations up- and down-gradient of a uranium-contaminated aquifer.
The processing of sediment to accurately characterize the spatially-resolved depth profiles of geophysical and geochemical properties along with signatures of microbial density and activity remains a challenge especially in complex contaminated areas. This study processed cores from two sediment boreholes from background and contaminated core sediments and surrounding groundwater. Fresh core sediments were compared by depth to capture the changes in sediment structure, sediment minerals, biomass, and pore water geochemistry in terms of major and trace elements including pollutants, cations, anions, and organic acids. Soil porewater samples were matched to groundwater level, flow rate, and preferential flows and compared to homogenized groundwater-only samples from neighboring monitoring wells. Groundwater analysis of nearby wells only revealed high sulfate and nitrate concentrations while the same analysis using sediment pore water samples with depth was able to suggest areas high in sulfate- and nitrate-reducing bacteria based on their decreased concentration and production of reduced by-products that could not be seen in the groundwater samples. Positive correlations among porewater content, total organic carbon, trace metals and clay minerals revealed a more complicated relationship among contaminant, sediment texture, groundwater table, and biomass. The fluctuating capillary interface had high concentrations of Fe and Mn-oxides combined with trace elements including U, Th, Sr, Ba, Cu, and Co. This suggests the mobility of potentially hazardous elements, sediment structure, and biogeochemical factors are all linked together to impact microbial communities, emphasizing that solid interfaces play an important role in determining the abundance of bacteria in the sediments
Giant Outer Transiting Exoplanet Mass (GOT 'EM) Survey. I. Confirmation of an Eccentric, Cool Jupiter With an Interior Earth-sized Planet Orbiting Kepler-1514*
Despite the severe bias of the transit method of exoplanet discovery toward
short orbital periods, a modest sample of transiting exoplanets with orbital
periods greater than 100 days is known. Long-term radial velocity (RV) surveys
are pivotal to confirming these signals and generating a set of planetary
masses and densities for planets receiving moderate to low irradiation from
their host stars. Here, we conduct RV observations of Kepler-1514 from the Keck
I telescope using the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer. From these data, we
measure the mass of the statistically validated giant ( ) exoplanet Kepler-1514 b with a 218 day orbital period as
. The bulk density of this cool (390 K) giant planet is
g cm, consistent with a core supported by
electron degeneracy pressure. We also infer an orbital eccentricity of
from the RV and transit observations, which is
consistent with planet-planet scattering and disk cavity migration models. The
Kepler-1514 system contains an Earth-size, Kepler Object of Interest on a 10.5
day orbit that we statistically validate against false positive scenarios,
including those involving a neighboring star. The combination of the brightness
(=11.8) of the host star and the long period, low irradiation, and high
density of Kepler-1514 b places this system among a rare group of known

Results from Ireland North and Southâs 2022 report card on physical activity for children and adolescents
BackgroundThe Ireland North and South Report Card on Physical Activity (PA) for Children and Adolescents aims to monitor progress in PA participation across a range of internationally established indicators.MethodsData were collated for 11 indicators and graded following the harmonised Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance report card process. Six representative studies (sample size range n = 898 to n = 15,557) were primarily used in the grading, with many indicators supplemented with additional studies and reports. Data collected since the implementation of COVID-19 public health measures in March 2020 were excluded.ResultsGrades were awarded as follows: âOverall physical activityâ, C-; âOrganised Sport and Physical Activityâ, C; âActive Playâ, INC; âSedentary Behavioursâ, C-; âPhysical Fitnessâ, INC; âFamily and Peersâ, D+; âSchoolâ, C-; âPhysical Educationâ, D; âCommunity and Environmentâ, B+ and âGovernmentâ, B.
