    Embryology of the spider crabs Leurocyclus tuberculosus (H. Milne-Edwards & Lucas 1842) and Libinia spinosa (H. Milne-Edwards 1834) (Brachyura, Majoidea)

    The embryonic development of the spider crabs Leurocyclus tuberculosus and Libinia spinosa was described based on laboratory reared specimens. Living embryos were removed from female every 48 h and external morphometric traits, dimensions and development time were registered. Total development was divided into five periods based on: I) the cleavage, II) the embryonic primordium, III) the optic lobes, IV) the pigmentation in the optic lobes and V) the chromatophores. Different characteristics like spines, setae, telson morphology and processes, make both species distinguishable from the period III until hatching. Egg volume was greater in Leurocyclus tuberculosus than in Libinia spinosa. The duration of each period was not similar during development; while in L. tuberculosus the period II (morphogenesis) is the longest, in L. spinosa, the period IV (pigmentation) is the longest. Complete embryonic development at 14°C lasted 36 days in Leurocyclus tuberculosus and 57 days in Libinia spinosa. The knowledge about the embryonic development is essential for studies on reproduction and fundamental ecology of marine bottom invertebrates. It provides a useful tool to determine the time elapsed since spawning and the time remaining before hatching in live eggs, in ecological and comparative studies. Fil: Gonzalez Pisani, Ximena.     Diversos autores afirman que la elección de pareja se basa principalmente en encontrar características semejantes a las de los padres. Así, las mujeres buscarían un hombre que se parezca a su padre, mientras que los hombres tenderían a elegir una mujer parecida a su madre. Por ello, se realizó una investigación con el fin de encontrar si había correlación entre las características percibidas en las características de autoconcepto de los padres y el de la pareja permanente, para lo cual se utilizó un cuestionario elaborado ex profeso. Se halló que los hombres perciben una mayor relación entre su madre y su pareja, en comparación con las mujeres, concluyéndose que en ambos sexos existe una clara tendencia a vincularse con una pareja sobre la base del tipo de relación que se tuvo con los padres

    Evaluation of neuroinflammation as modulator of tau aggregation in response to repetitive mild traumatic brain injury

    The pathological misfolding and aggregation of hyper-phosphorylated tau (ptau) protein in neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) is the main hallmark of a group of neurodegenerative diseases called tauopathies. These include important disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Mounting evidence supports that the aggregation and deposition of misfolded proteins is an early event in the development of AD and CTE. Several studies uphold traumatic brain injury (TBI) as an important risk factor for both disorders, since there is a relationship between TBI severity and frequency, and the vulnerability to develop dementia. Importantly, individuals affected by TBI show elevated levels of ptau in cerebrospinal fluid and NFTs in specific brain areas. Although previous studies on tau mice subjected to TBI show increased ptau burden, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have not been explored. Besides, previous research neither recapitulate the effects of repetitive mild TBI (rmTBI), reported to lead to long-lasting neurological consequences. Acute and chronic inflammation are intimately associated to TBI events, but its role on tau aggregation over time remains unknown. Here, we analyze the neuroinflammatory response, at both short- and long-term, in transgenic tau mice after rmTBI. Our data suggest that rmTBI triggers microglia and astroglia activation and that they may be involved in the increase observed on tau pathology in concussed mice. This could indicate that neuroinflammation could have an active role in the increased risk to develop tauopathies after brain concussion.Universidad de Málaga.     Early evolution of galaxies and of large-scale structure from CMB experiments

    Next generation CMB experiments with arcmin resolution will, for free, lay the foundations for a real breakthrough on the study of the early evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, thanks to the detection of large samples of strongly gravitationally lensed galaxies and of proto-clusters of dusty galaxies up to high redshifts. This has an enormous legacy value. High resolution follow-up of strongly lensed galaxies will allow the direct investigation of their structure and kinematics up to z~6, providing direct information on physical processes driving their evolution. Follow-up of proto-clusters will allow an observational validation of the formation history of the most massive dark matter halos up to z~4, well beyond the redshift range accessible via X-ray or SZ measurements. These experiments will also allow a giant leap forward in the determination of polarization properties of extragalactic sources, and will provide a complete census of cold dust available for star formation in the local universe.Comment: Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 US Decadal Surve

    Radio sources in next-generation CMB surveys

    CMB surveys provide, for free, blindly selected samples of extragalactic radio sources at much higher frequencies than traditional radio surveys. Next-generation, ground-based CMB experiments with arcmin resolution at mm wavelengths will provide samples of thousands radio sources allowing the investigation of the evolutionary properties of blazar populations, the study of the earliest and latest stages of radio activity, the discovery of rare phenomena and of new transient sources and events. Space-borne experiments will extend to sub-mm wavelengths the determinations of the SEDs of many hundreds of blazars, in temperature and in polarization, allowing us to investigate the flow and the structure of relativistic jets close to their base, and the electron acceleration mechanisms. A real breakthrough will be achieved in the caracterization of the polarization properties. The first direct counts in polarization will be obtained, enabling a solid assessment of the extra-galactic source contamination of CMB maps and allowing us to understand structure and intensity of magnetic fields, particle densities and structures of emitting regions close to the base of the jet.Comment: Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 US Decadal Surve

    Late-life depression is able to accelerate learning and memory impairment in a mouse model of Alzheimer´s disease

    Clinical studies suggest that depression could be considered an important risk factor for the future development of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In fact, there is a strong association between late-life depression and AD. The age of AD onset has been shown to be accelerated in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with a history of depression, and women appear to be particularly more vulnerable to this condition. In addition, individuals with MCI who present depressive symptoms have an elevated burden of amyloid-beta (Aβ), the main toxic protein associated with Alzheimer's pathology, and a higher risk of developing AD compared to non-depressed MCI patients. Although it has been described that some transgenic models of AD can develop signs similar to depression in advanced stages, the induction of Alzheimer's pathology due to a depressive process has not been studied under experimental conditions to emulate late-life depression as a risk factor for AD. The objective of this study is to determine, by inducing unpredictable mild chronic stress (CUMS) in tau transgenic P301S mice, whether depression is a cause, rather than a consequence, of AD development. The results of our study indicate that the induction of CUMS in transgenic animals induces phenotypic changes related to a depressive state. Behavioral and histological studies suggest that depression-like induction can worse AD pathology. The findings generated in this project could provide evidence of depression as a risk factor for AD

    Inclusive Place-Making in Spartanburg, SC: Amplifying Latinx Voices through Community-Based Research

    In response to a growing local interest in “place-making” work, our team developed and carried out a research project centered on the ideas of inclusive place, community, and health, with a focus on the inclusion of the growing Latinx community in the Spartanburg area. The project is a first step in what we imagine to be a long arc of community-based research and is in response to the desire of community collaborators for better information to inform their decision-making, particularly with regard to inclusion of Latinx residents. The long-term arc of the research will be shaped by ideas from community partners related to inclusivity; thriving and welcoming community spaces; health equity; and food access and is adaptable to a focus on particular areas or demographics within Spartanburg County. The goal of the present phase of research was to generate qualitative data (1) to inform the implementation of upcoming community projects; (2) to be available to community leaders as a complement to existing quantitative data about areas related to the research focus; (3) to inform the scope, design, and methods of other groups interested in doing related research work, including program evaluation or assessment. Our qualitative approach has sought to respect the “Don’t do anything for us without us” imperative for inclusive community work and aims to create a way to include and amplify the voices of those who will be affected by coming community projects, in informing the implementation of those projects

    En el presente documento se brinda una breve crónica de lo acontecido cuando en septiembre de 2014, con la participación de elementos de la fuerza pública, se desapareció a 43 estudiantes de la Normal Rural Isidro Burgos de Ayotzinapa, Guerrero. Se da cuenta tanto de las inconsistencias de la verdad histórica presentada por el gobierno federal, como de la crisis de legitimidad que vive la actual administración que, si bien llegó con el apoyo de un porcentaje muy bajo del electorado, con el paso de los años ha visto disolver su popularidad. Por otro lado, siguiendo las ideas de Raul Zibechi y Ana Esther Ceceña se menciona que lo sucedido en Ayotzinapa debe ser visto como un emblema del capitalismo neoextractivista que aqueja nuestra región. En dicho sentido se hace énfasis a la agenda política y económica de la actual administración, con el objetivo de dar cuenta de una agudización de las contradicciones sociales, sobre todo en territorios rurales de nuestro país

    Sub-micro- and nano-sized polyethylene terephthalate deconstruction with engineered protein nanopores

    The identification or design of biocatalysts to mitigate the accumulation of plastics, including sub-micro- and nano-sized polyethylene terephthalate (nPET), is becoming a global challenge. Here we computationally incorporated two hydrolytic active sites with geometries similar to that of Idionella sakaiensis PET hydrolase, to fragaceatoxin C (FraC), a membrane pore-forming protein. FraCm1/m2 could be assembled into octameric nanopores (7.0 nm high × 1.6–6.0 nm entry), which deconstructed (40 °C, pH 7.0) nPET from GoodFellow, commodities and plastic bottles. FraCm1 and FraCm2 degrade nPET by endo- and exo-type chain scission. While FraCm1 produces bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate as the main product, FraCm2 yields a high diversity of oligomers and terephthalic acid. Mechanistic and biochemical differences with benchmark PET hydrolases, along with pore and nPET dynamics, suggest that these pore-forming protein catalytic nanoreactors do not deconstruct macro-PET but are promising in nanotechnology for filtering, capturing and breaking down nPET, for example, in wastewater treatment plants.This study was conducted under the auspices of the FuturEnzyme Project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under the auspices of the FuturEnzyme Project (grant agreement no. 101000327) and the PlasticsFatE project (grant agreement no. 95921), and Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement no.
