    Optimizing local protocols implementing nonlocal quantum gates

    We present a method of optimizing recently designed protocols for implementing an arbitrary nonlocal unitary gate acting on a bipartite system. These protocols use only local operations and classical communication with the assistance of entanglement, and are deterministic while also being "one-shot", in that they use only one copy of an entangled resource state. The optimization is in the sense of minimizing the amount of entanglement used, and it is often the case that less entanglement is needed than with an alternative protocol using two-way teleportation.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure.     Association between Sarcopenia and Reduced Bone Mass: Is Osteosarcopenic Obesity a New Phenotype to Consider in Weight Management Settings?

    Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is a frequent phenotype in people with obesity; however, it is unclear whether this links with an impaired bone status. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between SO and low bone mass, and to assess the prevalence of a new entity that combines excessive fat deposition, reduced muscle mass and strength, and low bone mass defined as osteosarcopenic obesity (OSO). Body composition was completed by a DXA scan in 2604 participants with obesity that were categorized as with or without SO, and with low or normal bone mineral content (BMC). Participants with both SO and low BMC were defined as OSO. Among the entire sample, 901 (34.6%) participants met the criteria for SO. This group showed a reduced mean BMC (2.56 ± 0.46 vs. 2.85 ± 0.57, p < 0.01) and displayed a higher prevalence of individuals with low BMC with respect to those without SO (47.3% vs. 25.9%, p < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of SO increases the odds of having low BMC by 92% [OR = 1.92; 95% CI: (1.60–2.31), p < 0.05] after adjusting for age, body weight, and body fat percentage. Finally, 426 (16.4%) out of the total sample were affected by OSO. Our findings revealed a strong association between SO and reduced bone mass in adults with obesity, and this introduces a new phenotype that combines body fat, muscle, and bone (i.e., OSO) and appears to affect 16% of this population

    La preocupación por el medioambiente y sus problemáticas ha cobrado una especial significación en las últimas décadas, siendo la sociedad -a través de estructuras de poder y decisión- a lo largo de la historia la que ha ejercido el mayor impacto sobre el medio natural desencadenando la crisis medioambiental global. El presente trabajo constituye un aporte que los autores realizan como integrantes del equipo de investigación del proyecto denominado "El proceso de organización espacial del sur cordobés. Un estudio de base para desentrañar sus problemas ambientales". El área de estudio comprende el espacio que se extiende desde el río Tercero hacia el sur. Dentro de este sector se identifican claramente dos grandes configuraciones territoriales: la sierra y la llanura.     Anti-angiogenic activity evaluation of secondary metabolites from Calycolpus moritzianus leaves.

    Angiogenesis is a crucial step in many pathological conditions like cancer, inflammation and metastasis formation; on these basis the search for antiangiogenic agents has widened. In order to identify new compounds able to interfere in the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor-1 (VEGFR-1, also known as Flt-1) recognition by VEGFs family members, we screened Calycolpus moritzianus (O. Berg) Burret leaves extracts by a competitive ELISA-based assay. MeOH and CHCl3 extracts and several their fractions demonstrated to be able to prevent VEGF or PlGF interaction with Flt-1, with an inhibition about 50% at concentration of 100 μg/mL.     Transcriptional profiling of human bronchial epithelial cell BEAS-2B exposed to diesel and biomass ultrafine particles

    Background: Emissions from diesel vehicles and biomass burning are the principal sources of primary ultrafine particles (UFP). The exposure to UFP has been associated to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, including lung cancer. Although many aspects of the toxicology of ambient particulate matter (PM) have been unraveled, the molecular mechanisms activated in human cells by the exposure to UFP are still poorly understood. Here, we present an RNA-seq time-course experiment (five time point after single dose exposure) used to investigate the differential and temporal changes induced in the gene expression of human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) by the exposure to UFP generated from diesel and biomass combustion. A combination of different bioinformatics tools (EdgeR, next-maSigPro and reactome FI app-Cytoscape and prioritization strategies) facilitated the analyses the temporal transcriptional pattern, functional gene set enrichment and gene networks related to cellular response to UFP particles.Results: The bioinformatics analysis of transcriptional data reveals that the two different UFP induce, since the earliest time points, different transcriptional dynamics resulting in the activation of specific genes. The functional enrichment of differentially expressed genes indicates that the exposure to diesel UFP induces the activation of genes involved in TNFa signaling via NF-kB and inflammatory response, and hypoxia. Conversely, the exposure to ultrafine particles from biomass determines less distinct modifications of the gene expression profiles. Diesel UFP exposure induces the secretion of biomarkers associated to inflammation (CCXL2, EPGN, GREM1, IL1A, IL1B, IL6, IL24, EREG, VEGF) and transcription factors (as NFE2L2, MAFF, HES1, FOSL1, TGIF1) relevant for cardiovascular and lung disease. By means of network reconstruction, four genes (STAT3, HIF1a, NFKB1, KRAS) have emerged as major regulators of transcriptional response of bronchial epithelial cells exposed to diesel exhaust.Conclusions: Overall, this work highlights modifications of the transcriptional landscape in human bronchial cells exposed to UFP and sheds new lights on possible mechanisms by means of which UFP acts as a carcinogen and harmful factor for human health

    Adherence to Mediterranean Diet and Its Association with Maternal and Newborn Outcomes

    Background: Pregnancy is a crucial stage in a woman’s life and can be affected by epigenetic and environmental factors. Diet also plays a key role in gestation. This study aimed to evaluate how a greater or lesser adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) influences specific parameters of mother and newborn. Methods: After delivery, the women participating in the study answered a questionnaire: demographic information; anthropometric data (pre-pregnancy weight, height, and gestational weight gain); dietary habits information (adherence to MD before and during pregnancy, using the validated Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), quality of protein intake); pregnancy information (onset of complications, cesarean/vaginal delivery, gestational age at birth, birth weight, birth length); and clinical practitioner for personalized dietary patterns during pregnancy. Results: A total of 501 respondents have been included in the study, and 135 were excluded for complications. Women who followed the advice of clinical nutritionists showed better adherence to MD (p = 0.02), and the baby’s birth weight was higher (p = 0.02). Significant differences in gestational weight gain (p < 0.01) between groups with dissimilar diet adherence were demonstrated.     Epidemiology of Hypoalbuminemia in Hospitalized Patients: A Clinical Matter or an Emerging Public Health Problem?

    Serum albumin levels are strongly associated with the morbidity, prognosis, and mortality rates of patients with hypoalbuminemia, which is a frequent problem during hospitalization. An observational retrospective study was carried out to analyze changes in albumin levels in hospitalized patients at the "Fondazione Policlinico Tor Vergata-PTV" in 2018. The prevalence of preexisting hypoalbuminemia at the time of discharge from hospital was investigated using a sample of 9428 patients. Information was collected from the discharge files recorded in the central informatics system of the hospital. Analysis of albumin levels at admission and at discharge was conducted by classes of albuminemia and then stratified by age. At the time of admission, hypoalbuminemia was found to be present in more than half of the sample, with no sex differences. The serum albumin level tended to decrease with age, with pathologic levels appearing from 50 years and progressive worsening thereafter. The condition of marked and mild hypoalbuminemia was more prevalent in patients over 65 years of age. Our findings suggest that hypoalbuminemia should be considered a dangerous condition in itself and a serious public health problem. We aimed to emphasize the role of albumin as useful marker of the in-hospital malnutrition and frailty, to be integrated in the routinely assessment of patients for reconsidering ad hoc healthcare pathways after discharge from hospital, especially when dealing with fragile populations

    Comparison of nasopharyngeal nylon flocked swabs with universal transport medium and rayon- bud swabs with a sponge reservoir of viral transport medium in the diagnosis of paediatric influenza

    This study compared a kit containing a nasopharyngeal nylon flocked swab and a tube with a liquid universal transport medium (UTM) with a kit containing a plastic-shafted rayon-budded swab with a sponge reservoir of viral transport medium for the molecular detection of influenza viruses in children. Respiratory samples were collected from 314 children aged ,5 years with influenza-like illness (186 males; mean age 2.32±2.27 years) using both swabs in a randomized sequence for each patient. The flocked swabs permitted the detection of 28 influenza A (8.9 %) and 45 influenza B (14.3 %) cases, and the rayon-bud swabs 26 influenza A (8.3 %) and 43 influenza B (13.7 %) cases, with detection rates of 23.2 and 22.0 %, respectively, and similar cycle threshold values. Paediatricians and laboratory staff were significantly more satisfied with both the simplicity (P ,0.0001) and rapidity (P ,0.0001) of the nasopharyngeal flocked swabs with UTM. These findings show that the flocked swabs with UTM and the rayon-bud swabs with a sponge transport medium are similarly efficient in preserving influenza virus nucleic acid, but that the kit containing a flocked swab with a UTM allows easier and more rapid collection and processing of specimens. INTRODUCTION Respiratory infections are the most common diseases of infants and children Antigen detection tests and PCR-based methods are both currently used to detect viruses in respiratory secretions There are various kits containing a nasopharyngeal swab and a tube with transport medium on the market, but only a few studies, mainly of adults, have compared their efficiency in collecting respiratory cells and preserving influenza virus nucleic acid Sample collection. Two samples were collected from each patient and transported by means of two kits: one containing a flexible nasopharyngeal nylon flocked swab and a mini-tube with 1 ml liquid universal transport medium (UTM; Copan Italia), and the other a rayon-budded swab with a tube containing a sponge pre-impregnated with transport medium (Virocult; Medical Wire &amp; Equipment). Using the swabs in a randomized sequence, two nasopharyngeal samples were collected from each child (one from each nostril) by trained paediatricians (L. C., L. G. and S. B.). The distance between the patient&apos;s nares and ear lobe was measured to estimate the length of insertion, after which the swabs were gently inserted towards the pharynx until resistance was felt and then rotated three times to obtain epithelial cells. They were then withdrawn and put into the tube containing the specific transport medium. All of the specimens were kept cool and delivered to the laboratory within 3 h of collection. Sample processing. In the laboratory, each swab was processed in triplicate by three researchers (C. G. M., C. D. and A. V.) as indicated by the manufacturers: 190 ml of the liquid transport medium for the flocked swabs was used directly, whereas the rayon-budded swabs were placed in a tube containing 1 ml liquid lysis buffer (the same amount as that contained in the mini-UTM), the tube was vortexed and incubated for 10 min at room temperature, and 190 ml of the solution was used for extraction. PCR. Viral RNA was extracted from all of the samples by means of a NucliSENS EasyMAG automated extraction system (bioMeriéux), using phocine distemper virus (PDV) as an extraction/PCR inhibition control as described previously (Bosis et al., 2005; Staff satisfaction. Trained paediatricians and members of the laboratory staff were asked to record their satisfaction with the simplicity and rapidity using the swabs after the enrolment of each patient or the completion of the analysis of each pair of swabs by completing a 5-point scale (from 5 &apos;very satisfied&apos; to 1 &apos;very dissatisfied&apos;). Statistical analysis. The data relating to the paired specimens collected from 314 children (186 males, 59.2 %), with a mean age of 2.32±2.27 years, were compared using SAS version 9.1 software (SAS Institute). Continuous variables were analysed using Wilcoxon&apos;s signed rank test or rank sum test as appropriate, and the categorical variables by means of contingency tables and a x 2 or Fisher&apos;s test. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Satisfaction was based on a 5-point scale from 5 &apos;very satisfied&apos; to 1 &apos;very dissatisfied&apos;. .20 for influenza B virus. However, the paediatricians and laboratory staff were significantly more satisfied with both the simplicity (P ,0.0001) and the rapidity (P ,0.0001) of the nasopharyngeal flocked swabs with UTM. Our study showed that the flocked swabs with UTM and the rayon-budded swabs with transport medium preimpregnated sponge were similarly efficient in preserving influenza virus nucleic acid, but that the former were considered better in terms of the simplicity and rapidity of collection and laboratory testing. Systematic evaluation of the aetiology of paediatric respiratory infections is increasingly being considered an important means of preventing their spread and rationalizing therapy Our main finding was that the paediatricians preferred the flocked swabs because they were more flexible and made it easier and quicker to collect the samples. In addition, the laboratory staff found that the kit containing a flocked swab and liquid transport medium was advantageous insofar as it allowed RNA extraction and PCR to be performed directly on the liquid without the need to add further buffer, whereas the kit containing a transport medium pre-impregnated sponge required an additional step that made the procedure more complicated, timeconsuming and at risk of contamination. One limitation of this study is represented by the fact that the interpretation of the results on simplicity and rapidity of collection and laboratory testing may be devalued by repeated scoring and clustering by the same staff members. This means that further studies that involve several swab collectors and laboratory researchers are required to confirm our results. Moreover, our aim was to compare the efficiency of the two kits in detecting influenza virus nucleic acid, but further studies are required to evaluate the sensitivity of the two transport systems with serial dilutions of positive samples of influenza A and B viruses. Finally, a complete comparison of the sensitivity and specificity of the two kits should also include detection of other respiratory viruses that are commonly found in respiratory samples (e.g. respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, rhinovirus), and future research should address this aim. In conclusion, both the flocked swabs with UTM and the rayon-bud swabs with a sponge reservoir of viral transport medium allow adequate collection, transport and preservation of nasal secretions for influenza detection. However, the kit containing a flocked swab with a liquid transport medium facilitated rapid specimen collection and processing. These factors should be considered together with local costs when choosing a product to use in clinical practice. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
