Fairness of performance evaluation procedures and job satisfaction: the role of outcome-based and non-outcome based effects
Prior management accounting studies on fairness perceptions have overlooked two important issues. First, no prior management accounting studies have investigated how procedural fairness, by itself, affects managers' job satisfaction. Second, management accounting researchers have not demonstrated how conflicting theories on procedural fairness can be integrated and explained in a coherent manner. Our model proposes that fairness of procedures for performance evaluation affects job satisfaction through two distinct processes. The first is out-come-based through fairness of outcomes (distributive fairness). The second is non-outcome-based through trust in superior and organisational commitment. Based on a sample of 110 managers, the results indicate that while procedural fairness perceptions affect job satisfaction through both processes, the non-outcome-based process is much stronger than the outcome-based process. These results may be used to develop a unified theory on procedural fairness effects

Is null-point reconnection important for solar flux emergence?
The role of null-point reconnection in a 3D numerical MHD model of solar
emerging flux is investigated. The model consists of a twisted magnetic flux
tube rising through a stratified convection zone and atmosphere to interact and
reconnect with a horizontal overlying magnetic field in the atmosphere. Null
points appear as the reconnection begins and persist throughout the rest of the
emergence, where they can be found mostly in the model photosphere and
transition region, forming two loose clusters on either side of the emerging
flux tube. Up to 26 nulls are present at any one time, and tracking in time
shows that there is a total of 305 overall, despite the initial simplicity of
the magnetic field configuration. We find evidence for the reality of the nulls
in terms of their methods of creation and destruction, their balance of signs,
their long lifetimes, and their geometrical stability. We then show that due to
the low parallel electric fields associated with the nulls, null-point
reconnection is not the main type of magnetic reconnection involved in the
interaction of the newly emerged flux with the overlying field. However, the
large number of nulls implies that the topological structure of the magnetic
field must be very complex and the importance of reconnection along separators
or separatrix surfaces for flux emergence cannot be ruled out.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures. Added one referenc
Reliability Analysis of Component-Based Systems with Multiple Failure Modes
This paper presents a novel approach to the reliability modeling and analysis of a component-based system that allows dealing
with multiple failure modes and studying the error propagation among components. The proposed model permits to specify the components attitude to produce, propagate, transform or mask different failure modes.
These component-level reliability specifications together with information
about systems global structure allow precise estimation of reliability properties by means of analytical closed formulas, probabilistic modelchecking or simulation methods. To support the rapid identification of components that could heavily affect systems reliability, we also show how our modeling approach easily support the automated estimation of the system sensitivity to variations in the reliability properties of its components.
The results of this analysis allow system designers and developers to identify critical components where it is worth spending additional improvement efforts
Experimental and theoretical near edge x ray absorption fine structure studies of NO
Experimental near edge x ray absorption fine structure NEXAFS spectra of the nitrosonium NO ion are presented and theoretically analyzed. While neutral NO has an open shell, the cation is a closed shell species, which for NEXAFS leads to the simplicity of a closed shell spectrum. Compared to neutral NO, the electrons in the cation experience a stronger Coulomb potential, which introduces a shift of the ionization potential towards higher energies, a depletion of intensity in a large interval above the amp; 960; amp; 8727; resonance, and a shift of the amp; 963; amp; 8727; resonance from the continuum to below the ionization threshold. NEXAFS features at the nitrogen and oxygen K edges of NO are compared, as well as NEXAFS features at the nitrogen edges of the isoelectronic closed shell species NO , N2, and N2
Scale Vs. Conformal Invariance in the AdS/CFT Correspondence
We present two examples of non-trivial field theories which are scale
invariant, but not conformally invariant. This is done by placing certain field
theories, which are conformally invariant in flat space, onto curved
backgrounds of a specific type. We define this using the AdS/CFT
correspondence, which relates the physics of gravity in asymptotically Anti-de
Sitter (AdS) spacetimes to that of a conformal field theory (CFT) in one
dimension fewer. The AdS rotating (Kerr) black holes in five and seven
dimensions provide us with the examples, since by the correspondence we are
able to define and compute the action and stress tensor of four and six
dimensional field theories residing on rotating Einstein universes, using the
``boundary counterterm'' method. The rotation breaks conformal but not scale
invariance. The AdS/CFT framework is therefore a natural arena for generating
such examples of non-trivial scale invariant theories which are not conformally

Characterisation of the muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment
A novel single-particle technique to measure emittance has been developed and used to characterise seventeen different muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE). The muon beams, whose mean momenta vary from 171 to 281 MeV/c, have emittances of approximately 1.2–2.3 π mm-rad horizontally and 0.6–1.0 π mm-rad vertically, a horizontal dispersion of 90–190 mm and momentum spreads of about 25 MeV/c. There is reasonable agreement between the measured parameters of the beams and the results of simulations. The beams are found to meet the requirements of MICE
An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
