Course planning at Lufthansa technical training: Constructing more profitable schedules

Lufthansa Technical Training GmbH (LIT) performs training courses for Lufthansa AG as well as for several other international airlines. Courses of about 670 different types are offered of which several hundred take place each year. The course scheduling problem faced by LTT is to develop a yearly schedule which maximizes the profit margin incurred while meeting a variety of complex precedence, temporal, and resource-related constraints. A "good" operational schedule should also meet a number of additional subordinate objectives. In the past, scheduling was solely done manually. We describe the problem and survey the process of developing a prototype course scheduling module. The operational planning Situation of 1996 served as our major test instance; it turned out that the best so-found schedule is substantially better than the Solution manually constructed by LTT, measured in terms of profit margin incurred as well as computation time required. Details on the subsequently developed fully-fledged decision support system are also provided

A model and prototype implementation for tracking and tracing agricultural batch products along the food chain

There is an increasing demand of traceability in the food chain, statutory requirements are growing stricter and there is increasing pressure to develop standardized traceability systems. Each event in the chain, like production of transportation, packing, distribution or processing results in a different product which can have its own information associated within the tracing system. From the raw material to the sale of goods, more and more information needs to be gathered and made available. Supplementary information may also be collected at any step, in order to provide data for analysis and optimization of production practices. Using web-based systems for data processing, storage and transfer makes possible a flexible way of information access, networking and usability. In this paper an architectural proposal is presented and the proposed solution is tested by the implementation of a prototype. The software architecture presented makes use of a series of standards than offer new possibilities in traceability control and management. For testing the prototype, information from precision farming together with the information recorded during the transport and delivery was used. The system enables full traceability and it complies with all existing traceability standards

Facial duplication: Case, review, and embryogenesis

The craniofacial anatomy of an infant with facial duplication is described. There were four eyes, two noses, two maxillae, and one mandible. Anterior to the single pituitary the brain was duplicated and there was bilateral arhinencephaly. Portions of the brain were extruded into a large frontal encephalocele. Cases of symmetrical facial duplication reported in the literature range from two complete faces on a single head (diprosopus) to simple nasal duplication. The variety of patterns of duplication suggests that the doubling of facial components arises in several different ways: Forking of the notochord, duplication of the prosencephalon, duplication of the olfactory placodes, and duplication of maxillary and/or mandibular growth centers around the margins of the stomatodeal plate. Among reported cases, the female:male ratio is 2:1.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38153/1/1420250205_ftp.pd

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Calcaneal Fractures with a Low Profile Titanium Calcaneal Perimeter Plate

Forty-two intra-articular calcaneus fractures underwent open reduction and internal fixation with a low profile, titanium plate with a shape similar to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus. All 42 fractures healed without complication. There were no cases of hardware breakage. None of the patients were noted to have a loss of reduction. The plates were applied without bending and molded to the side of the calcaneus with tightening of the screws. No patient complained of symptomatic hardware during the follow-up period. With postoperative plain radiographs, the reduction was judged as anatomic in 35 patients, less than a 2 mm step off in six patients, and one patient with greater than 2 mm step off. Use of this new plate allows for easy application as it does not require contouring, is well tolerated without complaints of hardware prominence, and none of the hardware broke prior to fracture union. </jats:p
