Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife as a Piece of Mosaic in Karen Blixen’s Tale The Roads Round Pisa: An Intertextual Analysis

If in interpreting a story we take the story\u27s ending as a vantage point, this should give us sufficient ground to analyze how the story is held together, what moves the characters, the plot and so on. This, however, is not the case with Karen Blixen\u27s tales, where we need to take a few steps back with our eyes gently closed. It is there that the focus moves from the tale\u27s characters and the writer\u27s personality to the question of the tale\u27s design, as postulated by Blixen. Characters in the writer\u27s tales sometimes manage to discern the design. This could happen at the end of their life, as, for example, in the case of Count Ponteziani at the end of The Roads Round Pisa who realizes that his life was too excessively miserable to find out about God\u27s plans in his regard; or, in the case of the character of Carlotta, who understands that „life is a mosaic“ created by God little by little, and if she were able to see „at the centre of the mosaic“ „a tiny shiny piece“, she would be able to understand its plan. However, the reader of a finer taste cannot be molified by this position—to observe the story form end point or from some other vantage point on the temporal continuum marked by „after“. In his imagination he has to take a step back in order to realize the tale\u27s design and its context, including meaning of all the gaps and blanks in it—that which is not said, which is presumed in the literal sense. In Blixen\u27s tale, desing and mosaic are made, among others, of all the short stories which have been placed into a big story, explain one another and are self-referential. Every single short story (for example, the one of Joseph and Potiphar\u27s wife) is a key to unlocking the main story

A consensus document on definition and diagnostic criteria for orthorexia nervosa

    Get PDF
Purpose: Since the term orthorexia nervosa (ON) was coined from the Greek (ᜀρΞός, right and ᜄρΔΟÎčς, appetite) in 1997 to describe an obsession with “correct” eating, it has been used worldwide without a consistent definition. Although multiple authors have proposed diagnostic criteria, and many theoretical papers have been published, no consensus definition of ON exists, empirical primary evidence is limited, and ON is not a standardized diagnosis. These gaps prevent research to identify risk and protective factors, pathophysiology, functional consequences, and evidence-based therapeutic treatments. The aims of the current study are to categorize the common observations and presentations of ON pathology among experts in the eating disorder field, propose tentative diagnostic criteria, and consider which DSM chapter and category would be most appropriate for ON should it be included. Methods: 47 eating disorder researchers and multidisciplinary treatment specialists from 14 different countries across four continents completed a three-phase modified Delphi process, with 75% agreement determined as the threshold for a statement to be included in the final consensus document. In phase I, participants were asked via online survey to agree or disagree with 67 statements about ON in four categories: A–Definition, Clinical Aspects, Duration; B–Consequences; C–Onset; D–Exclusion Criteria, and comment on their rationale. Responses were used to modify the statements which were then provided to the same participants for phase II, a second round of feedback, again in online survey form. Responses to phase II were used to modify and improve the statements for phase III, in which statements that met the predetermined 75% of agreement threshold were provided for review and commentary by all participants. Results: 27 statements met or exceeded the consensus threshold and were compiled into proposed diagnostic criteria for ON. Conclusions: This is the first time a standardized definition of ON has been developed from a worldwide, multidisciplinary cohort of experts. It represents a summary of observations, clinical expertise, and research findings from a wide base of knowledge. It may be used as a base for diagnosis, treatment protocols, and further research to answer the open questions that remain, particularly the functional consequences of ON and how it might be prevented or identified and intervened upon in its early stages. Although the participants encompass many countries and disciplines, further research will be needed to determine if these diagnostic criteria are applicable to the experience of ON in geographic areas not represented in the current expert panel. The Changing Role of Nordic Courts

The Supreme Courts in all the Nordic countries reserve, and exercise, the power to set aside unconstitutional laws. In this way, they protect the rule of law and the human rights that are enshrined in their national constitutions. However, they go about this in different ways and treat different constitutional rights in ways distinct from one another. In this chapter, I discuss the development of the diversified judicial review of legislation in the Nordic countries. I also discuss the independence of their judiciaries in the light of the latest developments in Europe. Finally, I discuss the importance of developing standards for the interpretation of case law on these constitutional issues. Recent development brings with it two consequences for Nordic courts: the task of assessing the independence of judiciaries in other EU states, and questions about how the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary can be strengthened at home

A fragmentation of the media market, and major changes in TV viewing patterns are a reality that todayŽs media companies are working with. The Finnish public service broad-casting company Yle, has in addition to the given competition with the commercial media companies, also a statutory responsibility to shoulder, and face major challenges in todayŽs digital media landscape. A central question in this thesis is how to develop program ideas into concepts that fit within the framework of public service. The methods are based on YleŽs Norwegian counterpart, NRKŽs methods for program development. NRKŽs de-velopment manager, Ole Hedemann, have developed disciplined methods for program development, and Svenska Yle have begun to use these methods with some modifica-tions. Before I begin to describe YleŽs way of producing public service programs, I will clarify the meaning of public service in Finland. In this Theseus I will through empirical case studies, and with support of relevant literature and extracts from my internship diary describe the methods that Svenska Yle use to develop program ideas to public service programs. Through a television series that was developed during my internship at Svenska YleŽs department, Fakta och fiktion, I will describe the chain from idea to Concept
