Does export dependency hurt economic development? Empirical evidence from Singapore
A rapid export growth in East Asia was once identified as a source of the sustainable economic development that the region enjoyed. However, the current global recession has turned exports from an economic virtue to a vice. There is a growing awareness that a heavy reliance on exports has caused a serious economic downturn in the region. The present paper chooses Singapore as a case study to examine the relationship between the origin of the East Asian Miracle (i.e. export dependency) and the economic growth. For this purpose, the study employs a causality test developed by Toda and Yamamoto. The empirical findings indicate that despite a negative long-run relationship between export dependency and economic growth, Singapore's heavy reliance on exports does not seem to have produced negative effects on the nation's economic growth. This is because the increase in export dependency was an effect, and not a cause, of the country's output expansion.
Parity independence of the zero-bias conductance peak in a nanowire based topological superconductor-quantum dot hybrid device
We explore the signatures of Majorana fermions in a nanowire based
topological superconductor-quantum dot-topological superconductor hybrid device
by charge transport measurements. The device is made from an epitaxially grown
InSb nanowire with two superconductor Nb contacts on a Si/SiO substrate. At
low temperatures, a quantum dot is formed in the segment of the InSb nanowire
between the two Nb contacts and the two Nb contacted segments of the InSb
nanowire show superconductivity due to the proximity effect. At zero magnetic
field, well defined Coulomb diamonds and the Kondo effect are observed in the
charge stability diagram measurements in the Coulomb blockade regime of the
quantum dot. Under the application of a finite, sufficiently strong magnetic
field, a zero-bias conductance peak structure is observed in the same Coulomb
blockade regime. It is found that the zero-bias conductance peak is present in
many consecutive Coulomb diamonds, irrespective of the even-odd parity of the
quasi-particle occupation number in the quantum dot. In addition, we find that
the zero-bias conductance peak is in most cases accompanied by two differential
conductance peaks, forming a triple-peak structure, and the separation between
the two side peaks in bias voltage shows oscillations closely correlated to the
background Coulomb conductance oscillations of the device. The observed
zero-bias conductance peak and the associated triple-peak structure are in line
with the signatures of Majorana fermion physics in a nanowire based topological
superconductor-quantum dot-topological superconductor system, in which the two
Majorana bound states adjacent to the quantum dot are hybridized into a pair of
quasi-particle states with finite energies and the other two Majorana bound
states remain as the zero-energy modes located at the two ends of the entire
InSb nanowire.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Strict detector-efficiency bounds for n-site Clauser-Horne inequalities
An analysis of detector-efficiency in many-site Clauser-Horne inequalities is
presented, for the case of perfect visibility. It is shown that there is a
violation of the presented n-site Clauser-Horne inequalities if and only if the
efficiency is greater than n/(2n-1). Thus, for a two-site two-setting
experiment there are no quantum-mechanical predictions that violate local
realism unless the efficiency is greater than 2/3. Secondly, there are n-site
experiments for which the quantum-mechanical predictions violate local realism
whenever the efficiency exceeds 1/2.Comment: revtex, 5 pages, 1 figure (typesetting changes only
A low-frequency study of recently identified double-double radio galaxies
In order to understand the possible mechanisms of recurrent jet activity in
radio galaxies and quasars, which are still unclear, we have identified such
sources with a large range of linear sizes (220 917 kpc), and hence time
scales of episodic activity. Here we present high-sensitivity 607-MHz Giant
Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) images of 21 possible double-double radio
galaxies (DDRGs) identified from the FIRST survey to confirm their episodic
nature. These GMRT observations show that none of the inner compact components
suspected to be hot-spots of the inner doubles are cores having a flat radio
spectrum, confirming the episodic nature of these radio sources. We have
indentified a new DDRG with a candidate quasar, and have estimated the upper
spectral age limits for eight sources which showed marginal evidence of
steepening at higher frequencies. The estimated age limits (11 52 Myr) are
smaller than those of the large-sized ( 1 Mpc) DDRGs.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 7 figure
Optical Studies of InGaAs/GaAs Multiple Quantum Wells (MQW\u27s) and GaAs/Si Using Novel Scanning Electron Microscopy Based Techniques
The influence of defects on electron-hole plasma transport in nipi-doped in 0.2Ga0.8As/GaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) has been studied using a novel technique called electron beam induced absorption modulation (EBIA) imaging. Modulation doped MQW structures exhibit large optical nonlinearities and are important for the development of all-optical spatial light modulators used in optical computing and communication. The electron-hole plasma is generated by a high-energy electron beam in a scanning electron microscope and is used as a probe to study the MQW absorption modulation induced locally by the electron beam. The influence of structural defects on the diffusive transport of carriers is imaged with a ÎŒm-scale resolution. A strong spatial correlation between dark line defects observed in cathodoluminescence (CL) and absorption modulation steps in EBIA reveals the existence of strain-induced band edge fluctuations that are caused by misfit dislocations. The spatial variation of stress in metalorganic chemical vapor deposition grown GaAs/Si has been studied with linearly polarized cathodoluminescence (LPCL). GaAs grown on Si wafers in selective areas (10 to 1000 ÎŒm mesas) were studied. The large difference in thermal expansion coefficient between GaAs and Si results in thermal stress-induced microcracks and dislocations which can occur upon cooling from growth temperatures. Using LPCL, we have determined the spatial distribution of the stress tensor from the polarized CL strain-split peak positions and solutions to the orbital-strain Hamiltonian
Non-Abelian toplogical superconductors from topological semimetals and related systems under superconducting proximity effect
Non-Abelian toplogical superconductors are characterized by the existence of
{zero-energy} Majorana fermions bound in the quantized vortices. This is a
consequence of the nontrivial bulk topology characterized by an {\em odd} Chern
number. It is found that in topological semimetals with a single two-bands
crossing point all the gapped superconductors are non-Abelian ones. Such a
property is generalized to related but more generic systems which will be
useful in the search of non-Abelian superconductors and Majorana fermions
Ternary q-Virasoro-Witt Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras
In this paper we construct ternary -Virasoro-Witt algebras which
-deform the ternary Virasoro-Witt algebras constructed by Curtright, Fairlie
and Zachos using enveloping algebra techniques. The ternary
Virasoro-Witt algebras constructed by Curtright, Fairlie and Zachos depend on a
parameter and are not Nambu-Lie algebras for all but finitely many values of
this parameter. For the parameter values for which the ternary Virasoro-Witt
algebras are Nambu-Lie, the corresponding ternary -Virasoro-Witt algebras
constructed in this article are also Hom-Nambu-Lie because they are obtained
from the ternary Nambu-Lie algebras using the composition method. For other
parameter values this composition method does not yield Hom-Nambu Lie algebra
structure for -Virasoro-Witt algebras. We show however, using a different
construction, that the ternary Virasoro-Witt algebras of Curtright, Fairlie and
Zachos, as well as the general ternary -Virasoro-Witt algebras we construct,
carry a structure of ternary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebra for all values of the
involved parameters
Quantum key distribution with "dual detectors"
To improve the performance of a quantum key distribution (QKD) system, high
speed, low dark count single photon detectors (or low noise homodyne detectors)
are required. However, in practice, a fast detector is usually noisy. Here, we
propose a "dual detectors" method to improve the performance of a practical QKD
system with realistic detectors: the legitimate receiver randomly uses either a
fast (but noisy) detector or a quiet (but slow) detector to measure the
incoming quantum signals. The measurement results from the quiet detector can
be used to bound eavesdropper's information, while the measurement results from
the fast detector are used to generate secure key. We apply this idea to
various QKD protocols. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements
in both BB84 protocol with ideal single photon source and Gaussian-modulated
coherent states (GMCS) protocol; while for decoy-state BB84 protocol with weak
coherent source, the improvement is moderate. We also discuss various practical
issues in implementing the "dual detectors" scheme.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
Introduction to topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions
This short review article provides a pedagogical introduction to the rapidly
growing research field of Majorana fermions in topological superconductors. We
first discuss in some details the simplest "toy model" in which Majoranas
appear, namely a one-dimensional tight-binding representation of a p-wave
superconductor, introduced more than ten years ago by Kitaev. We then give a
general introduction to the remarkable properties of Majorana fermions in
condensed matter systems, such as their intrinsically non-local nature and
exotic exchange statistics, and explain why these quasiparticles are suspected
to be especially well suited for low-decoherence quantum information
processing. We also discuss the experimentally promising (and perhaps already
successfully realized) possibility of creating topological superconductors
using semiconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, proximity-coupled to
standard s-wave superconductors and exposed to a magnetic field. The goal is to
provide an introduction to the subject for experimentalists or theorists who
are new to the field, focusing on the aspects which are most important for
understanding the basic physics. The text should be accessible for readers with
a basic understanding of quantum mechanics and second quantization, and does
not require knowledge of quantum field theory or topological states of matter.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure
