    Which Values are Reproduced within the Swedish Educational System?

    Which values are reproduced within the Swedish educational system? Using the World Values Survey (WVS) as a background the paper discusses a tension between the general evaluative outlook of Swedish teacher students and the educational values established by The Swedish National Agency for Education (SNAE). According to the results from WVS, which maps evaluative differences between approximately 80 countries in the world, Sweden stands out as a country that rejects traditional values and embraces so called secular self-expression values. However, the values established by SNAE include both traditional values, such as “sharing a common cultural heritage”, and secular self-expression values, such as “individual freedom and integrity”. Against this background we conducted a survey of 179 Swedish teacher students in order to investigate the relation between their evaluative outlook and the values they are supposed to convey to their pupils as established by SNAE. The result of the survey indicates that these students do not differ in any significant respect from the Swedish population in general as regards secular vs traditional evaluations. The fact that the traditional values emphasized by SNAE seem to be scarcely represented among the teacher students, makes questionable whether they will be present in their future teaching. On the assumptions that there are important educational values among the traditional as well as the secular self-expression ones, and that values are reproduced within an educational system, we argue that there is reason to take the imbalance in the evaluative outlook of the students seriously.   Milliseid väärtusi taastoodab Rootsi haridussĂĽsteem?Kasutades taustana „Maailma väärtuste uuringu“ (WVS) tulemusi, käsitleb artikkel vastuolu Rootsi õpetajakoolituse tudengite väärtushinnangute ning Rootsi Rahvusliku Haridusagentuuri (SNAE) väljatöötatud kasvatusväärtuste vahel. WVS kaardistab erinevusi umbes 80 riigi väärtushinnangutes ning uuringu põhjal eristub Rootsi ĂĽhiskonnana, mis lĂĽkkab tagasi traditsioonilised väärtused ning toetab pigem sekulaarse eneseväljendusega seotud väärtusi. Ent SNAE sätestatud väärtused sisaldavad nii traditsioonilisi (nt ĂĽhise kultuurilise pärandi säilitamine) kui ka sekulaarse eneseväljendusega seotuid (nt isikuvabadus ja eneseväärikus). Toetudes sellele taustale, viisime läbi 179-t Rootsi õpetajakoolituse tudengit hõlmanud uuringu, et selgitada välja, kuidas seonduvad nende enda väärtushinnangud ja need väärtused, mille edasiandmist õpilastele SNAE neilt tulevases töös eeldab. Tulemused näitavad, et õpetajakoolituse tudengid ei erine Rootsi ĂĽldpopulatsioonist sekulaarsete vs. traditsiooniliste väärtuste kĂĽsimuses ĂĽheski olulises aspektis. Teisisõnu – SNAE rõhutatud traditsioonilistel väärtustel on õpetajakoolituse tudengite hulgas vähene kandepind, mis muudab kĂĽsitavaks, kuivõrd nad neid tulevases õppetöös esindaksid. Eeldustel, et nii sekulaarsete eneseväljendusse puutuvate kui ka traditsiooniliste väärtuste hulgas on olulisi kasvatusväärtusi ning et haridussĂĽsteem kannab väärtusi edasi, väidame, et on põhjust võtta kirjeldatud tasakaalustamatust tudengite hulgas tõsiselt.&nbsp

    The CCAAT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP) δ is differently regulated by fibrillar and oligomeric forms of the Alzheimer amyloid-β peptide

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The transcription factors CCAAT/enhancer binding proteins (C/EBP) α, β and δ have been shown to be expressed in brain and to be involved in regulation of inflammatory genes in concert with nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). In general, C/EBPα is down-regulated, whereas both C/EBPβ and δ are up-regulated in response to inflammatory stimuli. In Alzheimer's disease (AD) one of the hallmarks is chronic neuroinflammation mediated by astrocytes and microglial cells, most likely induced by the formation of amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits. The inflammatory response in AD has been ascribed both beneficial and detrimental roles. It is therefore important to delineate the inflammatory mediators and signaling pathways affected by Aβ deposits with the aim of defining new therapeutic targets.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Here we have investigated the effects of Aβ on expression of C/EBP family members with a focus on C/EBPδ in rat primary astro-microglial cultures and in a transgenic mouse model with high levels of fibrillar Aβ deposits (tg-ArcSwe) by western blot analysis. Effects on DNA binding activity were analyzed by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Cross-talk between C/EBPδ and NF-κB was investigated by analyzing binding to a κB site using a biotin streptavidin-agarose pull-down assay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We show that exposure to fibril-enriched, but not oligomer-enriched, preparations of Aβ inhibit up-regulation of C/EBPδ expression in interleukin-1β-activated glial cultures. Furthermore, we observed that, in aged transgenic mice, C/EBPα was significantly down-regulated and C/EBPβ was significantly up-regulated. C/EBPδ, on the other hand, was selectively down-regulated in the forebrain, a part of the brain showing high levels of fibrillar Aβ deposits. In contrast, no difference in expression levels of C/EBPδ between wild type and transgenic mice was detected in the relatively spared hindbrain. Finally, we show that interleukin-1β-induced C/EBPδ DNA binding activity to both C/EBP and κB sites is abolished after exposure to Aβ.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These data suggest that both expression and function of C/EBPδ are dysregulated in Alzheimer's disease. C/EBPδ seems to be differently regulated in response to different conformations of Aβ. We propose that Aβ induces an imbalance between NF-κB and C/EBP transcription factors that may result in abnormal responses to inflammatory stimuli.</p

    Elastic Stars in General Relativity: II. Radial perturbations

    We study radial perturbations of general relativistic stars with elastic matter sources. We find that these perturbations are governed by a second order differential equation which, along with the boundary conditions, defines a Sturm-Liouville type problem that determines the eigenfrequencies. Although some complications arise compared to the perfect fluid case, leading us to consider a generalisation of the standard form of the Sturm-Liouville equation, the main results of Sturm-Liouville theory remain unaltered. As an important consequence we conclude that the mass-radius curve for a one-parameter sequence of regular equilibrium models belonging to some particular equation of state can be used in the same well-known way as in the perfect fluid case, at least if the energy density and the tangential pressure of the background solutions are continuous.     Reactive magnetron sputtering of tungsten target in krypton/trimethylboron atmosphere

    W-B-C films were deposited on Si(100) substrates held at elevated temperature by reactive sputtering from a W target in Kr/trimethylboron (TMB) plasmas. Quantitative analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the films are W-rich between ~ 73 and ~ 93 at.% W. The highest metal content is detected in the film deposited with 1 sccm TMB. The C and B concentrations increase with increasing TMB flow to a maximum of ~18 and ~7 at.%, respectively, while the O content remains nearly constant at 2-3 at.%. Chemical bonding structure analysis performed after samples sputter-cleaning reveals C-W and B-W bonding and no detectable W-O bonds. During film growth with 5 sccm TMB and 500 oC or with 10 sccm TMB and 300-600 oC thin film X-ray diffraction shows the formation of cubic 100-oriented WC1-x with a possible solid solution of B. Lower flows and lower growth temperatures favor growth of W and W2C, respectively. Depositions at 700 and 800 oC result in the formation of WSi2 due to a reaction with the substrate. At 900 oC, XPS analysis shows ~96 at.% Si in the film due to Si interdiffusion. Scanning electron microscopy images reveal a fine-grained microstructure for the deposited WC1-x films. Nanoindentation gives hardness values in the range from ~23 to ~31 GPa and reduced elastic moduli between ~220 and 280 GPa in the films deposited at temperatures lower than 600 oC. At higher growth temperatures the hardness decreases by a factor of 3 to 4 following the formation of WSi2 at 700-800 oC and Si-rich surface at 900 oC.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

    Relativistic Two-stream Instability

    We study the (local) propagation of plane waves in a relativistic, non-dissipative, two-fluid system, allowing for a relative velocity in the "background" configuration. The main aim is to analyze relativistic two-stream instability. This instability requires a relative flow -- either across an interface or when two or more fluids interpenetrate -- and can be triggered, for example, when one-dimensional plane-waves appear to be left-moving with respect to one fluid, but right-moving with respect to another. The dispersion relation of the two-fluid system is studied for different two-fluid equations of state: (i) the "free" (where there is no direct coupling between the fluid densities), (ii) coupled, and (iii) entrained (where the fluid momenta are linear combinations of the velocities) cases are considered in a frame-independent fashion (eg. no restriction to the rest-frame of either fluid). As a by-product of our analysis we determine the necessary conditions for a two-fluid system to be causal and absolutely stable and establish a new constraint on the entrainment.Comment: 15 pages, 2 eps-figure

    Relativistic mechanics of neutron superfluid in (magneto) elastic star crust

    At densities below the neutron drip threshold, a purely elastic solid model (including, if necessary, a frozen-in magnetic field) can provide an adequate description of a neutron star crust, but at higher densities it will be necessary to allow for the penetration of the solid lattice by an independently moving current of superfluid neutrons. In order to do this, the previously available category of relativistic elasticity models is combined here with a separately developed category of relativistic superfluidity models in a unified treatment based on the use of an appropriate Lagrangian master function. As well as models of the purely variational kind, in which the vortices flow freely with the fluid, such a master function also provides a corresponding category of non-dissipative models in which the vortices are pinned to the solid structure
