Heat transfer by radiation through porous insulations
Radiant transfer through fibrous and foamed insulating materials was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Transmission measurements were made under isothermal conditions with a black-body source varying from 200° to 800°F. Bulk density and fiber and pore size were also varied. These data were interpreted successfully in terms of a simple theoretical model. A photographic essay on landslides across southeastern New South Wales triggered by the rainfall events of 2022
Eastern Australia has experienced a significant magnitude rainfall event of extended duration in the first 7 months of 2022. Across the east coast of New South Wales (NSW) a series of troughs and East Coast Lows occurred during a La Nina weather cycle bringing above average rainfall to the region. As this first half of 2022 La Nina event was drawing to a close the Indian Ocean Dipole entered a negative phase which coincided with another intense East Coast Low in early July 2022 impacting the Illawarra region of NSW. These events caused widespread flooding and significant landslide damage to road and rail infrastructure across the state networks and local government infrastructure across NSW. During this extended wet period in the first 7 months of 2022 more than 200 landslides have been recorded across the Illawarra, Southern Highlands and Blue Mountains regions of NSW whilst many more have occurred across the north coast region. This paper presents a brief and albeit preliminary summary of the rainfall and provides a series of photographs with very brief descriptions of some of these landslide events within southeastern NSW. The intent of the paper is to provide early guidance to AGS members of the nature and form of landslides that have occurred across the Illawarra region. Young adults' dynamic relationships with their families in early psychosis:Identifying relational strengths and supporting relational agency
OBJECTIVES: Most existing research on the family context of psychosis focuses on the 'burden' of caring for people experiencing psychosis. This research is the first to ask young people experiencing early psychosis to 'map' and describe their experiences and understandings of their family relationships, and how they have related to their psychosis and recovery. DESIGN: The research took an inductive, multimodal hermeneutic-phenomenological approach (Boden, Larkin & Iyer, 2019, Qual. Res. Psychology, 16, 218-236; Boden & Larkin, 2020, A handbook of visual methods in psychology, 358-375). METHOD: Ten young adults (18-23), under the care of early intervention in psychosis services in the UK, participated in an innovative relational mapping interview (Boden, Larkin & Iyer, 2018), which invited participants to draw a subjective 'map' of their important relationships. This visual methodology enables subtle, complex, ambivalent, and ambiguous aspects of the participants' experiences to be explored. RESULTS: Findings explore the participants' accounts of how they love, protect, and care for their families; how they wrestle with family ties as they mature; and their feelings about talking about their mental health with loved ones, which was typically very difficult. CONCLUSIONS: This paper advances understanding of recovery in psychosis through consideration of the importance of reciprocity, and the identification and nurturance of relational strengths. The capacity of a young person to withdraw or hold back when trying to protect others is understood as an example of relational agency. The possibility for extending strengths-based approaches and family work within the context of early intervention in psychosis services is discussed. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Young adults experiencing early psychosis may benefit from support to identify their relational strengths and the opportunities they have for reciprocity within their family structures, where appropriate. Relational motivations may be important for a range of behaviours, including social withdrawal and non-communication. Services may benefit from exploring the young person's relational context and subjective meaning-making in regard to these actions. Young adults experiencing early psychosis may benefit from opportunities to make sense of their family dynamics and how this impacts on their recovery. Attachment-based and relationally oriented interventions that increase trust and openness, and reduce feelings of burdensomeness are likely to support family functioning as well as individual recovery
Keck Adaptive Optics Imaging of 0.5<z<1 Field Galaxies from the Hubble Space Telescope Archive
We have employed natural guide star adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II
telescope to obtain near-infrared (H and K') images of three field galaxies,
each of redshift greater than 0.5. These are among the highest-redshift
non-active disk galaxies to be imaged with AO. Each of the galaxies was chosen
because it had been observed previously with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) by others. Our AO images in the near
infrared (NIR) closely match both the depth and high spatial resolution of
those optical data. Combining the archival V and I data with our new H and K'
images potentially produces a long wavelength baseline at uniform resolution.
The NIR data probe emission well longward of the 4000-Angstrom break at these
redshifts, and provide stellar fluxes less contaminated by dust. We fit
two-dimensional galaxy bulge-plus-disk models simultaneously in all bands, and
compare stellar-population-synthesis modeling to the photometry of these
separated components. This is an initial foray into combining HST and AO
imaging to produce a high spatial-resolution multi-color dataset for a large
sample of faint galaxies. Our pilot program shows that NIR AO images from large
ground-based observatories, augmented by HST images in the optical, can in
principle provide a powerful tool for the analysis of faint field galaxies.
However, the AO data S/N will have to be increased, and AO PSFs need to be

A qualitative study of the barriers to procedural sedation practices in paediatric emergency medicine in the UK and Ireland
© Published by the BMJ Publishing Group Limited. Introduction There is extensive literature on paediatric procedural sedation (PPS) and its clinical applications in emergency departments (EDs). While numerous guidance and policy documents exist from international bodies, there remains a lack of uniformity and consistency of PPS practices within EDs. PPS is now gaining traction in the UK and Ireland and this study aimed to describe existing PPS practices and identify any challenges to training and provision of ED-based PPS. Methods A qualitative approach was employed to capture data through a focus group interview. Nine consultants in emergency medicine (EM) participated, varying in years of experience, clinical settings (mixed adult and paediatric ED or paediatric only) and geographical location (UK and Ireland). The focus group was audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Attride-Stirling's framework for thematic network analysis. Results The global theme â € The Future of PPS in EM - A UK and Ireland Perspective' emerged from the following three organising themes: (1) training and education of ED staff; (2) current realities of PPS in EDs and (3) PPS and the wider hospital community. The main findings were (1) there is variability in ED PPS practice throughout the UK and Ireland; (2) lack of formal PPS training for trainees is a barrier to its implementation as a standard treatment and (3) there is a lack of recognition of PPS at a College level as a specialised EM skill. Conclusions Establishment of PPS as a standard treatment option in the emergency setting will require implementation of robust training into general and paediatric EM training. This should be supported and enhanced through national and international collaboration in EM-led PPS research and audit
A specific case in the classification of woods by FTIR and chemometric: discrimination of Fagales from Malpighiales
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic data was used to classify wood samples from nine species within the Fagales and Malpighiales using a range of multivariate statistical methods. Taxonomic classification of the family Fagaceae and Betulaceae from Angiosperm Phylogenetic System Classification (APG II System) was successfully performed using supervised pattern recognition techniques. A methodology for wood sample discrimination was developed using both sapwood and heartwood samples. Ten and eight biomarkers emerged from the dataset to discriminate order and family, respectively. In the species studied FTIR in combination with multivariate analysis highlighted significant chemical differences in hemicelluloses, cellulose and guaiacyl (lignin) and shows promise as a suitable approach for wood sample classification
The Gift:Transforming Lives through Organ Donation
It is my great pleasure to introduce this comic. Our project originated from an honest conversation with my friend and colleague Prof Chris Murray: how to communicate complex issues surrounding the issue of organ donation? Over the last seven years I have had the honour of being an ambassador for the Organ Donation campaign by telling my son, Andrew’s, story.Through my role as an Organ Donation ambassador I meet courageous and selfless people. Some are in desperate need of hope, some are in the position to provide hope, and those who, through their professionalism and dedication, transform lives.Our sincere thanks for the support of the following organisations: University of Dundee; the NHS Blood and Transplant Specialist Nurses in Organ Donation; Dundee Comics Creative Space; Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief, and the Organ Donation Comics team. it is only through their support that this projectcame to fruition.In the following pages we share heartfelt stories and life experiences related to organ donation. A two years longitudinal study of a transgenic Huntington disease monkey
BACKGROUND: A two-year longitudinal study composed of morphometric MRI measures and cognitive behavioral evaluation was performed on a transgenic Huntington’s disease (HD) monkey. rHD1, a transgenic HD monkey expressing exon 1 of the human gene encoding huntingtin (HTT) with 29 CAG repeats regulated by a human polyubiquitin C promoter was used together with four age-matched wild-type control monkeys. This is the first study on a primate model of human HD based on longitudinal clinical measurements. RESULTS: Changes in striatal and hippocampal volumes in rHD1 were observed with progressive impairment in motor functions and cognitive decline, including deficits in learning stimulus-reward associations, recognition memory and spatial memory. The results demonstrate a progressive cognitive decline and morphometric changes in the striatum and hippocampus in a transgenic HD monkey. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study on a primate model of human HD based on longitudinal clinical measurements. While this study is based a single HD monkey, an ongoing longitudinal study with additional HD monkeys will be important for the confirmation of our findings. A nonhuman primate model of HD could complement other animal models of HD to better understand the pathogenesis of HD and future development of diagnostics and therapeutics through longitudinal assessment
British Society for Rheumatology guideline on management of adult and juvenile onset Sjögren disease
Sjögren disease (SD) is a chronic, autoimmune disease of unknown aetiology with significant impact on quality of life. Although dryness (sicca) of the eyes and mouth are the classically described features, dryness of other mucosal surfaces and systemic manifestations are common. The key management aim should be to empower the individual to manage their condition-conserving, replacing and stimulating secretions; and preventing damage and suppressing systemic disease activity. This guideline builds on and widens the recommendations developed for the first guideline published in 2017. We have included advice on the management of children and adolescents where appropriate to provide a comprehensive guideline for UK-based rheumatology teams.</p
