London or New York: where and when does the gold price originate?

We investigate the Information Shares (ISs) of the two main centres of gold trading, over a 25-year period, using nonoverlapping 4-month windows. We find that neither London nor New York is dominant in terms of price IS, that the dominant market switches from time to time and that these switches do not appear to be very clearly linkable to macroeconomic or political events

A Madness to the Method: A Defense of Divine Inspiration in the Case of Socrates

In contemporary Platonic scholarship, Socrates is quite often depicted as a hyper-rationalist, i.e., an individual who relies upon reason alone in his philosophical pursuits. And, such a position is not entirely unsupported, especially when one considers the rigor with which Socrates engages his interlocutors via the elenchtic method, not to mention the charges of impiety and atheism levied against him, for which he was found guilty. Yet, while Socrates did indeed hold reason in the highest esteem, when we look to the texts, we find evidence to suggest that he also took seriously the role played by divine inspiration in the pursuit of truth. Not only do we find examples of Socrates recognizing the potential for truth that the divinely inspired seem to exhibit, but further, we find Socrates himself to be the recipient of divine revelation in the form of his daimonion. And, while some scholars have dismissed such references as mere ironic gestures, I argue that these dismissive, and admittedly anachronistic claims are entirely unfounded. Instead, I propose that Plato recognized, and valued, the role that divine inspiration played in the case of Socrates. Yet, while the divine inspiration experienced by Socrates is seen in a positive light by Plato, given the uniqueness of his situation, Socrates, and his methodology, can no longer be the model upon which philosophical investigation is founded. Thus, recognizing the limitations of Socrates, limitations which are alleviated via divine assistance, Plato, in his late period, develops a new methodology, i.e., collection and division, one which might allow for the definitional knowledge which he seeks without reliance upon divine inspiration. Despite this change, however, I maintain that even in the late Platonic period, Plato still recognizes the value of divine inspiration. As such, Socrates, while perhaps not a philosopher in the unqualified sense according to Plato\u27s later understanding of philosophy, might rightly be understood as a unique individual who, through divine inspiration, is given access to truth, albeit a truth he is unable to fully explain

The contagion effects of the COVID-19 pandemic:Evidence from gold and cryptocurrencies

At the beginning of the 2020 global COVID-2019 pandemic, Chinese financial markets acted as the epicentre of both physical and financial contagion. Our results indicate that a number of characteristics expected during a "flight to safety" were present during the period analysed. The volatility relationship between the main Chinese stock markets and Bitcoin evolved significantly during this period of enormous financial stress. We provide a number of observations as to why this situation occurred. Such dynamic correlations during periods of stress present further evidence to cautiously support the validity of the development of this new financial product within mainstream portfolio design through the diversification benefits provided

Bandiri Music, Globalization and Urban Experience in Nigeria

This paper provides an analysis of the working of a musical form: bandiri. Bandiri is a musical genre performed by Sufi adepts in northern Nigeria who take popular Hindi film songs and change the words to sing praises to the Prophet Mohammed. In doing so they are involved in a complicated process of taking a profane genre and sacralizing it. I argue that bandiri is the result of the convergence in Kano, northern Nigeria, of three very different sorts of transnational cultural and religious networks: the long presence of Sufi brotherhoods in the north, the recent emergence of an anti-Sufi Islamist movement; and the continuing popularity of Indian films and songs. As an urban centre Kano is made up of overlapping sets of cultural, religious and economic networks that constitute its particular configuration. These networks create structural preconditions that provide the raw material from which urban experience might be fashioned.Cet article offre une analyse du façonnement d’une forme musicale : le bandiri. Le bandiri est un genre musical pratiqué par les Sufi du nord du Nigeria qui se servent des chansons des films indiens et en modifient les paroles pour chanter les louanges du prophète Mohammed. Ils sont ainsi engagés dans un processus compliqué qui consiste à s’emparer d’un genre profane pour le sacraliser. Dans cet article, on soutient que le bandiri est le résultat de la rencontre, qui s’est produite à Kano au nord du Nigeria, de trois différentes traditions culturelles et religieuses transnationales : celle des confréries sufi du nord de ce pays, celle du mouvement anti-sufi qui y a récemment vu le jour et enfin celle des films et des chansons indiens. En tant que centre urbain, Kano se compose de réseaux culturels, religieux et économiques qui lui donnent une configuration singulière. Ces réseaux constituent la matière première sur laquelle s’édifie l’expérience urbaine

FORCE DEVELOPMENT PROFILE OF THE LOWER LIMBS IN THE GRAB AND TRACK START IN SWIMMING

Left and right ground reaction forces of 9 male and 7 female national and international level swimmers were measured during grab and track starts. Analysis of temporal, kinetic and velocity measures indicated that while swimmers left the block faster in the track start, grab starts enabled swimmers to generate greater vertical impulses and take-off velocities. No significant differences were found in the horizontal impulses and the time to 6m between the two starts. The Infrared Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) for TMT: the atmospheric dispersion corrector

We present a conceptual design for the atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) for TMT's Infrared Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The severe requirements of this ADC are reviewed, as are limitations to observing caused by uncorrectable atmospheric effects. The requirement of residual dispersion less than 1 milliarcsecond can be met with certain glass combinations. The design decisions are discussed and the performance of the design ADC is described.
