Young Adult Sexual Behavior in South Africa: How Important is Parental Social Support?

Risky sexual behavior exposes young adults to poor reproductive health outcomes. Parental social support is associated with reduced incidence of risky sexual behavior, but this association has not been adequately investigated in South Africa. We used data from Waves 1 and 3 of the Cape Area Panel Study (a longitudinal study of adolescents and young adults aged 14-22 years and living in the Cape Town metropolitan area) to investigate the associations between parental social support and young adult risky sexual behavior in South Africa. We conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to assess whether lack of specific categories of parental social supports at wave 1 (baseline) are associated with higher risky sexual behaviors by young adults at wave 3 (follow-up). We found that young adults who never ate meals with their mothers and those who never discussed personal matters with their fathers had increased risks of multiple sexual partnerships. Also, young adults who never got pocket money or money for gifts from their mothers had increased risk to engage in unprotected sex during their first sexual encounter. Our findings suggest that eating family meals, discussing personal matters with youth, and providing them with pocket money, may protect young adults in South Africa from risky sexual behavior. Intracellular proteomics and extracellular vesiculomics as a metric of disease recapitulation in 3D-bioprinted aortic valve arrays

In calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD), mechanosensitive valvular cells respond to fibrosis- and calcification-induced tissue stiffening, further driving pathophysiology. No pharmacotherapeutics are available to treat CAVD because of the paucity of (i) appropriate experimental models that recapitulate this complex environment and (ii) benchmarking novel engineered aortic valve (AV)–model performance. We established a biomaterial-based CAVD model mimicking the biomechanics of the human AV disease-prone fibrosa layer, three-dimensional (3D)–bioprinted into 96-well arrays. Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analyses probed the cellular proteome and vesiculome to compare the 3D-bioprinted model versus traditional 2D monoculture, against human CAVD tissue. The 3D-bioprinted model highly recapitulated the CAVD cellular proteome (94% versus 70% of 2D proteins). Integration of cellular and vesicular datasets identified known and unknown proteins ubiquitous to AV calcification. This study explores how 2D versus 3D-bioengineered systems recapitulate unique aspects of human disease, positions multiomics as a technique for the evaluation of high throughput–based bioengineered model systems, and potentiates future drug discovery

Feminist Art Criticism : An Annotated Bibliography

    No full text
This reference book provides bibliographic information on texts dealing with feminist art history, feminist art criticism and visual art by women artists (emphasis is on English-language publications). Langer's introduction situates the book's content within the contexts of feminist theory and sexual politics. The bibliographical references are organized under the following headings: Books; Exhibition Catalogues; Articles in Periodicals and Chapters in Books. Includes an Author Index and Subject Index. Circa 1600 bibl. ref

Home Is Where the Heart Is : Our Family Values

Javors gives a brief introduction to a group exhibition which explores the relationships between gay identity and family values. Langer discusses the differences between the gay and heterosexual communities, especially in terms of how women and children are affected by the psychological and ideological functions of the modern democratic family. 13 bibl. ref
