Real-time Assessment of Integrated Safety-security Scenarios Triggering Cascading Events in the Process Industries

Industrial sites processing and storing hazardous chemicals can be attractive targets of malicious acts of interference. The consequences successful intentional attacks to chemical facilities can be severe and could escalate generating domino effects, potentially affecting people and the environment. Moreover, intentional attacks have a dynamic escalation that is not well depicted by conventional analyses, which are instead static. This works focuses on the development of a comprehensive tool for Integrated Safety-Security risk assessment and related domino effects based on a three-dimensional (3D) real-time approach. Firstly, the plant is inspected using a drone to generate the graphic interface of the tool, which is the 3D reconstruction of the plant. Real-time data are associated with each mapped element, e.g., pressure/temperature conditions. The tool allows for the evaluation of probabilities and 3D consequences of accidents given real time and/or user input data. Potential domino effects of integrated safety-security scenarios will also be included in the tool, allowing for the mapping of plant vulnerability, risk and supporting the evaluation of weaknesses and need of additional countermeasures. In order to provide a sample application, a simplified version of the tool was used on a case study

Laboratory data integration into medical record

Laboratory Information System, integrated with the Hospital Information System, has been developed at the G.Pasquinucci Hospital, section of Institute of Clinical Physiology of National Research Council (CNR), specialized in adult and paediatric cardiac surgery. The aim was to automate the testing process from clinical departments to laboratory and back into medical record. Laboratory workflow consists of three parts: (a) test ordering by clinical staff, printing bar-coded ID labels and transmitting orders by network to laboratory; (b) processing test requests and controlling identified specimens by laboratory staff, providing work orders to analytical instruments and validation of results authorizing delivery into the hospital clinical repository; (c) consulting test results in clinical departments by referring physicians through the electronic medical record. This year the system has been used on adult patients processing 135000 laboratory tests concerning chemistry, haematology, coagulation and immunology

CFD simulation of natural convective flow in pressurized tanks exposed to fire

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a consolidated tool to support industrial projects development and was recently adopted in the framework of consequence assessment and safety analyses. In the present study, a CFD model of pressurized vessels exposed to an accidental fire was developed, with the aim to determine the transient behavior of the stored fluid during the heat-up. An integral model for consequence assessment was adopted in order to set advanced boundary conditions to the CFD model. The results of CFD simulations allowed predicting temperature and velocity of both liquid and vapor phases, as well as the complex recirculation phenomena induced by natural convection. This allowed determining the pressurization rate in the fired tank, thus obtaining key indications for the evaluation of the residual mechanical resistance

CFD modelling of vertical LNG tanks adopted in heavy trucks refuelling stations

In the present study, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was set up to analyse the dynamic behaviour of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tanks adopted in heavy trucks refuelling stations in normal operating conditions or during process upsets. The CFD model was based on the Volume-Of-Fluid (VOF) method to simulate the transient behaviour of a multi-phase flow in a 100 m3 vertical cylindrical tank. The model first considered a fully insulated vessel, and subsequently it was modified to take into account possible damages of the insulation layer, this being a critical upset scenario. The CFD model allowed predicting the dynamic pressure build up in the damaged tank, thus obtaining key indications for the evaluation of the vessel mechanical resistance and set up of safety measures. The model also provided the prediction of vapor temperature with respect to time and external heat source, that is a key issue to assess the effectiveness of the thermal insulation

Divergent functional profiles of acidic and basic phospholipases A2 in the venom of the snake Porthidium lansbergii lansbergii

The Lansberg’s hognose pitviper, Porthidium lansbergii lansbergii, inhabits northern Colombia. A recent proteomic characterization of its venom (J. Proteomics [2015] 114, 287e299) revealed the presence of phospholipases A2 (PLA2) accounting for 16.2% of its proteins. The two most abundant PLA2s were biochemically and functionally characterized. Pllans-I is a basic, dimeric enzyme with a monomer mass of 14,136 Da, while Pllans-II is an acidic, monomeric enzyme of 13,901 Da. Both have Asp49 in their partial amino acid sequences and, accordingly, are catalytically active upon natural or synthetic substrates. Nevertheless, these two enzymes differ markedly in their bioactivities. Pllans-I induces myonecrosis, edema, and is lethal by intracerebroeventricular injection in mice, as well as cytolytic and anticoagulant in vitro. In contrast, Pllans-II is devoid of these effects, except for the induction of a moderate edema. In spite of lacking myotoxicity, Pllans-II enhances the muscle damaging action of Pllans-I in vivo. Altogether, results further illustrate the divergent functional profiles of basic and acidic PLA2s in viperid venoms, and suggest that Pllans-I plays a myotoxic role in envenomings by P. l. lansbergii, whereas Pllans-II, apparently devoid of toxicity, enhances muscle damage caused by Pllans-I.Universidad de Costa Rica/[741-B3-760]/UCR/Costa RicaPrograma Nacional de Formación de Investigadores/[567-2012]/Colciencias/ColombiaUCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias de la Salud::Instituto Clodomiro Picado (ICP
