    Bioavailability of butorphanol after intranasal administration to horses

    The aim of the present study was to describe butorphanol pharmacokinetics and bioavailability following intranasal administration to horses. Six adult horses received 0.05 mg/kg butorphanol, in a randomised crossover design, by either intravenous or intranasal route. Plasma concentrations of bu-torphanol were measured at predetermined time points using liquid chromatography/mass spectrome-try assay. After intravenous injection, mean ±SD butorphanol steady-state volume of distribution and clearance was 3.20 ± 1.77 L/kg and 3.18 ± 1.47 L/kg/h, respectively. Terminal half-lives for butor-phanol after intravenous and intranasal administrations were 0.68 ± 0.17 h and 1.79 ± 1.43 h. For intranasal administration, absorption half-life and peak plasma concentration were 0.43 ± 0.33 h and 1.95 ± 1.7 ng/mL, respectively. Bioavailability was 54.45 ± 20.09%. Intranasal butorphanol administration in horses is practical, not stressful and well tolerated. Therefore, it might be a substitute to the intravenous route in adult horses.Fil: Ferreira, V..     Lung and chest wall volume during vital capacity manoeuvre in Osteogenesis Imperfecta

    Background: Although Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) affects the connective tissue, pulmonary function might be compromised because of thoracic deformities. OI is known to be a restrictive lung disease, but spirometry provides global measurement without localizing the site of the restriction. Opto-electronic plethysmography (OEP), is a non-invasive method able to underline altered respiratory function as well as ventilatory thoraco-abdominal paradoxes during spontaneous breathing. We aimed to reconstruct the thoraco-abdominal surface, to perform local analyses of trunk motion and to make quantitative comparison of trunk shape and respiratory kinematics according to OI severity, particularly during maximal inspiratory and expiratory expansions. This is a cross-sectional study where we have studied the thoraco-abdominal compartmental analysis in 26 adult OI patients (14 Type III) at rest and during vital capacity manoeuvre using OEP. We have also applied a new method that created realistic and accurate 3D models to perform local analyses of trunk motion and to make quantitative comparison of trunk shape and respiratory kinematics. Results: Type III patients were characterized by lower spirometric lung volume, by lower sleep quality, by a more compressed thoracic configuration aggravated by severe scoliosis, by reduced global expansion at rest and during maximal maneuvers because of the reduced expansion of the pulmonary ribcage at rest (12% vs. 65% in healthy subjects), during maximal inspiration (37% vs. 69%) and expiration (16% vs. 68%) with local paradoxical movement occurring on the side of the ribcage region. Conclusion: The kinematics of the trunk changed to compensate for the severe structural deformities by shifting the expansion in the abdomen both at rest and during maximal manoeuvre because of a restricted thorax. For the first time, we have quantified and localized the site of the restriction in OI patients in the lateral part of the thorax.     Optical archival spectra of blazar candidates of uncertain type in the 3rd^{rd} Fermi Large Area Telescope Catalog

    Despite the fact that blazars constitute the rarest class among active galactic nuclei (AGNs) they are the largest known population of associated Îł\gamma-ray sources. Many of the Îł\gamma-ray objects listed in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope Third Source catalog (3FGL) are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), either because they show multifrequency behaviour similar to blazars but lacking optical spectra in the literature, or because the quality of such spectra is too low to confirm their nature. Here we select, out of 585 BCUs in the 3FGL, 42 BCUs which we identify as probable blazars by their WISE infrared colors and which also have optical spectra that are available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and/or Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey Database (6dFGS). We confirm the blazar nature of all of the sources. We furthermore conclude that 28 of them are BL Lacs, 8 are radio-loud quasars with flat radio spectrum and 6 are BL Lac whose emission is dominated by their host galaxy

    Refining the associations of the Fermi Large Area Telescope Source Catalogs

    The Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) First Source Catalog (1FGL) was released in February 2010 and the Fermi-LAT 2-Year Source Catalog (2FGL) appeared in April 2012, based on data from 24 months of operation. Since their releases, many follow up observations of unidentified gamma-ray sources (UGSs) were performed and new procedures to associate gamma-ray sources with potential counterparts at other wavelengths were developed. Here we review and characterize all the associations as published in the 1FGL and 2FGL catalog on the basis of multifrequency archival observations. In particular we located 177 spectra for the low-energy counterparts that were not listed in the previous Fermi catalogs, and in addition we present new spectroscopic observations of 8 gamma-ray blazar candidates. Based on our investigations, we introduce a new counterpart category of "candidate associations" and propose a refined classification for the candidate low-energy counterparts of the Fermi sources. We compare the 1FGL-assigned counterparts with those listed in the 2FGL to determine which unassociated sources became associated in later releases of the Fermi catalogs. We also search for potential counterparts to all the remaining unassociated Fermi sources. Finally, we prepare a refined and merged list of all the associations of the 1FGL plus 2FGL catalogs that includes 2219 unique Fermi objects. This is the most comprehensive and systematic study of all the associations collected for the gamma-ray sources available to date.     The Gamma-ray Blazar Quest: new optical spectra, state of art and future perspectives

    We recently developed a procedure to recognize gamma-ray blazar candidates within the positional uncertainty regions of the unidentified/unassociated gamma-ray sources (UGSs). Such procedure was based on the discovery that Fermi blazars show peculiar infrared colors. However, to confirm the real nature of the selected candidates, optical spectroscopic data are necessary. Thus, we performed an extensive archival search for spectra available in the literature in parallel with an optical spectroscopic campaign aimed to reveal and confirm the nature of the selected gamma-ray blazar candidates. Here, we first search for optical spectra of a selected sample of gamma-ray blazar candidates that can be potential counterparts of UGSs using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR12). This search enables us to update the archival search carried out to date.     IndexaciĂłn: Web of ScienceBlazars, one of the most extreme classes of active galaxies, constitute so far the largest known population of.-ray sources, and their number is continuously growing in the Fermi catalogs. However, in the latest release of the Fermi catalog there is still a large fraction of sources that are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs) for which optical spectroscopic observations are necessary to confirm their nature and their associations. In addition, about one-third of the gamma-ray point sources listed in the Third Fermi-LAT Source Catalog (3FGL) are still unassociated and lacking an assigned lower-energy counterpart. Since 2012 we have been carrying out an optical spectroscopic campaign to observe blazar candidates to confirm their nature. In this paper, the sixth of the series, we present optical spectroscopic observations for 30 gamma-ray blazar candidates from different observing programs we carried out with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, William Herschel Telescope, Observatorio Astronomico Nacional, Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and Magellan. Telescopes. We found that 21 out of 30 sources investigated are BL Lac objects, while the remaining targets are classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars showing the typical broad emission lines of normal quasi-stellar objects. We conclude that our selection of gamma-ray blazar. candidates based on their multifrequency properties continues to be a successful way to discover potential low-energy counterparts of the Fermi. unidentified gamma-ray sources and to confirm the nature of BCUs.http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/0004-6256/151/4/95/met

    A Bayesian network meta-analysis on the effect of anesthetic drugs in cardiac surgery

    We carried out both a pair-wise and a Bayesian network meta-analysis, on 38 randomised trials, to assess how volatile-based anaesthesia (desflurane, isoflurane or sevoflurane) and total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) influence patients\u2019 survival after cardiac surgery. A network meta-analysis allow to compare different treatments that were never properly compared. On the basis of statistical inference, it is possible to establish which treatment is superior reaching, through indirect comparison, reliable conclusions otherwise difficult to achieve. The standard meta-analysis showed that the use of a volatile agent was associated with a reduction in mortality when compared to TIVA at the longest follow-up available (25/1994 [1.3%] in the volatile group versus 43/1648 [2.6%] in the TIVA group, odds ratio=0.51, 95% confidence interval 0.33-0.81, p for effect=0.004). The Bayesian network meta-analysis showed that sevoflurane (posterior mean of odds ratio =0.31, 95% credible interval 0.14-0.64) and desflurane (posterior mean of odds ratio =0.43, 95% credible interval 0.21-0.82) were individually associated with a reduction in mortality when compared to TIVA. Anaesthesia with volatile agents appears to reduce mortality after cardiac surgery when compared to TIVA, especially when sevoflurane or desflurane are used
