    Factors related to hysterectomy in women with physical and mobility disabilities

    [[abstract]]This paper aims to identify self-report data for hysterectomy prevalence and to explore its correlated factors among women with physical and mobility disabilities in Taiwan. This paper was part of a larger study, “Survey on Preventive Health Utilizations of People with Physical and Mobility Disability in Taiwan”, which is a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2009. We recruited 502 women aged ≧15 years who were officially registered as having physical and mobility disabilities. The results show that 11.3% of women with physical and mobility disabilities accepted hysterectomy surgery and that hysterectomy prevalence was increasing by age: 7% (45–49 years), 9.7% (50–54 years), 26.3% (55–59 years), 31% (60–64 years) and 17.6% (≧65 years). Multilevel logistic regression analyses revealed that being ≧50 years or older (OR = 4.65, 95% CI = 1.79–12.064), having had cervical cancer (OR = 17.2, 95% CI = 3.5–84.47) and not having a Pap smear test within the last 3 years (OR = 2.79, 95% CI = 1.194–6.561) were more likely to accept a hysterectomy operation than their counterparts. This study suggests that future studies should analyze hospital data and assesses long-term changes to understand an area's hysterectomy profile and correlated factors for these types of vulnerable populations

    High blood pressure in adults with disabilities Influence of gender? body weight and health behaviors

    [[abstract]]The aims of this study were to explore the mean and distribution of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and to examine the influence of gender, body weight and health behaviors on hypertension in adults with disabilities. We analyzed the 2010 annual community health examination chart of adults with disabilities in east Taiwan. The study samples included 833 adults with disabilities whose age 30 years and over participated in the analyses. The mean value of diastolic and systolic blood pressure (mmHg) of the study participants was 76.51 ± 12.65 (range = 40–155) and 127.39 ± 20.32 (range = 77–221). Fifteen percent and 23.4% of the participants have high diastolic (≧90 mmHg) and systolic (≧140 mmHg) blood pressure. There were 27.4% of the participants who had hypertension, high diastolic or/and systolic blood pressure. Finally, we found that the factors of older age (OR = 2.45, 95% CI = 1.22–4.93), overweight or obese in BMI (OR = 6.72, 95% CI = 1.90–23.78; OR = 6.76, 95% CI = 1.84–24.84), waist circumference (OR = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.03–2.61) and vegetable/fruit intake (OR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.39–0.94) were variables that could significantly predict the hypertension condition of the subjects after controlling factors of marital status, type and level of disability. To improve the healthcare for people who suffer with and prevention for hypertension, the study highlights the health authorities should pay much attention to blood pressure condition and their determinants for people with disabilities in the communities

    The contribution of Alu exons to the human proteome.

    BackgroundAlu elements are major contributors to lineage-specific new exons in primate and human genomes. Recent studies indicate that some Alu exons have high transcript inclusion levels or tissue-specific splicing profiles, and may play important regulatory roles in modulating mRNA degradation or translational efficiency. However, the contribution of Alu exons to the human proteome remains unclear and controversial. The prevailing view is that exons derived from young repetitive elements, such as Alu elements, are restricted to regulatory functions and have not had adequate evolutionary time to be incorporated into stable, functional proteins.ResultsWe adopt a proteotranscriptomics approach to systematically assess the contribution of Alu exons to the human proteome. Using RNA sequencing, ribosome profiling, and proteomics data from human tissues and cell lines, we provide evidence for the translational activities of Alu exons and the presence of Alu exon derived peptides in human proteins. These Alu exon peptides represent species-specific protein differences between primates and other mammals, and in certain instances between humans and closely related primates. In the case of the RNA editing enzyme ADARB1, which contains an Alu exon peptide in its catalytic domain, RNA sequencing analyses of A-to-I editing demonstrate that both the Alu exon skipping and inclusion isoforms encode active enzymes. The Alu exon derived peptide may fine tune the overall editing activity and, in limited cases, the site selectivity of ADARB1 protein products.ConclusionsOur data indicate that Alu elements have contributed to the acquisition of novel protein sequences during primate and human evolution

    We fabricated and characterized the amorphous silicon thin‐film transistor (a‐Si:H TFT) pixel electrode circuit with currentscaling function that can be used for active‐matrix organic lightemitting displays (AM‐OLEDs).     Geographic differences in social-welfare oriented institutional care for people with disabilities in Taiwan, 2002–2009

    [[abstract]]The present paper aims to provide information of long-term trend of distribution and utilization of institutional care resource for people with disabilities by different geographic areas in Taiwan. Data were analyzed using governmental reported general population by administrative area, population of persons with disabilities, and the profile of disability service institutions in Taiwan-Fuchien Area from 2002 to 2009. Results revealed that there were averagely 956,549 persons with disabilities and 15,172 institutional service beds (15.86 beds per 1000 persons with disabilities; range = 0–33‰) and the mean occupancy rate was 79% (area range: 36.26–92.09%). during the past 8 years. Many rural countries and off-shore islands have poorer disability service beds than other urban cities. The results also showed that the disability population (R2 = 0.093, p < 0.001), institutional service beds (R2 = 0.885, p = 0.001) and occupied service beds (R2 = 0.917, p < 0.001) were significantly increased in curve tests during 2002–2009. However, the service beds per 1000 persons with disabilities and occupancy rate were not statistical change during the past 8 years. The study highlights the service authorities should focus on the uneven distribution problem of disability institutional care, particularly in rural countries and off-shore islands in Taiwan

    Eosinophils from murine lamina propria induce differentiation of naïve T cells into regulatory T cells via TGF-β1 and retinoic acid

    Treg cells play a crucial role in immune tolerance, but mechanisms that induce Treg cells are poorly understood. We here have described eosinophils in lamina propria (LP) that displayed high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, a rate-limiting step during all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) synthesis, and expressed TGF-β1 mRNA and high levels of ATRA. Co-incubation assay confirmed that LP eosinophils induced the differentiation of naïve T cells into Treg cells. Differentiation promoted by LP eosinophils were inhibited by blocked either TGF-β1 or ATRA. Peripheral blood (PB) eosinophils did not produce ATRA and could not induce Treg differentiation. These data identifies LP eosinophils as effective inducers of Treg cell differentiation through a mechanism dependent on TGF-β1 and ATRA

    Pleiotropic Roles of ChSat4 in Asexual Development, Cell Wall Integrity Maintenance, and Pathogenicity in Colletotrichum higginsianum

    Potassium has an important role to play in multiple cellular processes. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the serine/threonine (S/T) kinase Sat4/Hal4 is required for potassium accumulation, and thus, regulates the resistance to sodium salts and helps in the stabilization of other plasma membrane transporters. However, the functions of Sat4 in filamentous phytopathogenic fungi are largely unknown. In this study, ChSat4, the yeast Sat4p homolog in Colletotrichum higginsianum, has been identified. Target deletion of ChSAT4 resulted in defects in mycelial growth and sporulation. Intracellular K+ accumulation was significantly decreased in the ChSAT4 deletion mutant. Additionally, the ΔChsat4 mutant showed defects in cell wall integrity, hyperoxide stress response, and pathogenicity. Localization pattern analysis indicated ChSat4 was localized in the cytoplasm. Furthermore, ChSat4 showed high functional conservation with the homolog FgSat4 in Fusarium graminearum. Taken together, our data indicated that ChSat4 was important for intracellular K+ accumulation and infection morphogenesis in C. higginsianum

    BCL-W is dispensable for the sustained survival of select Burkitt lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cell lines

    Dysregulated expression of BCL-2 family proteins allows cancer cells to escape apoptosis. To counter this, BH3-mimetic drugs that target and inhibit select BCL-2 prosurvival proteins to induce apoptosis have been developed for cancer therapy. Venetoclax, which targets BCL-2, has been effective as therapy for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and MCL-1-targeting BH3-mimetic drugs have been extensively evaluated in preclinical studies for a range of blood cancers. Recently, BCL-W, a relatively understudied prosurvival member of the BCL-2 protein family, has been reported to be abnormally upregulated in Burkitt lymphoma (BL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and Hodgkin lymphoma patient samples. Therefore, to determine if BCL-W would be a promising therapeutic target for B-cell lymphomas, we have examined the role of BCL-W in the sustained growth of human BL- and DLBCL-derived cell lines. We found that CRISPR/CAS9-mediated loss or short hairpin RNA-mediated knockdown of BCL-W expression in selected BL and DLBCL cell lines did not lead to spontaneous apoptosis and had no effect on their sensitivity to a range of BH3-mimetic drugs targeting other BCL-2 prosurvival proteins. Our results suggest that BCL-W is not universally required for the sustained growth and survival of human BL and DLBCL cell lines. Thus, targeting BCL-W in this subset of B-cell lymphomas may not be of broad therapeutic benefit

    Hemoconcentration is associated with early faster fluid rate and increased risk of persistent organ failure in acute pancreatitis patients.

    Background:Controversies existed surrounding the use of hematocrit to guide early fluid therapy in acute pancreatitis (AP). The association between hematocrit, early fluid therapy, and clinical outcomes in ward AP patients needs to be investigated. Methods:Data from prospectively maintained AP database and retrospectively collected details of fluid therapy were analyzed. Patients were stratified into three groups: Group 1, hematocrit 44% at 24 h; Group 3: hematocrit >44% on admission and decreased thereafter during first 24 h. "Early" means first 24 h after admission. Baseline characteristics, early fluid rates, and clinical outcomes of the three groups were compared. Results:Among the 628 patients, Group 3 had a higher hematocrit level, greater baseline predicted severity, faster fluid rate, and more fluid volume in the first 24 h compared with Group 1 or 2. Group 3 had an increased risk for persistent organ failure (POF; odds ratio 2, 95% confidence interval [1.1-3.8], P = 0.03) compared with Group 1 after adjusting for difference in baseline clinical severity scores, there was no difference between Group 2 and Group 3 or Group 1. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that hemoconcentration and early faster fluid rate were risk factors for POF and mortality (both P < 0.05). Conclusions:Hemoconcentration is associated with faster fluid rate and POF in ward AP patients. Randomized trials comparing standardized early fast and slow fluid management is warranted
