    Scottish social survey data, past, present and future – does Scotland need its own data strategy?

In this paper we explore whether or not in addition Scotland needs its own specific data strategy. This paper is intended to be a ‘think piece’ or critical essay, the motivation being to encourage debate about Scottish social survey data. Post-devolution, with the emergence of new forms of governance and new institutional arrangements, the political desire to research Scotland in the 21st Century has been brought into sharper resolution. Social and economic life in Scotland shares both similarities and differences with life south of the border. It is important that these characteristics are correctly identified with empirical data rather than simply being assumed. Scotland is a small territory with a good social science tradition and a healthy research sector. There is an increasing amount of survey data collecting measures relating to social and economic life in Scotland. These include both United Kingdom or Great Britain based surveys with a Scottish component, and Scotland focussed surveys. In this paper we outline a number of key issues relating to Scottish social science data resources. We provide a number of critical recommendations for social science data collection in Scotland. Finally, we examine the potential benefits of a comprehensive data strategy

    Nonthermal broadening in the conductance of double quantum dot structures

    We study the transport properties of a double quantum dot (DQD) molecule at zero and at finite temperature. The properties of the zero-temperature conductance depend on whether the level attraction between the symmetric and antisymmetric states of the DQD, produced by the coupling to the leads, exceeds or not the interdot tunneling. For finite temperature, we find a remarkable nonthermal broadening effect of the conductance resonance when the energy levels of the individual dots are detuned

    Augmentation of Rotator Cuff Repair With Soft Tissue Scaffolds

    Background Tears of the rotator cuff are one of the most common tendon disorders. Treatment often includes surgical repair, but the rate of failure to gain or maintain healing has been reported to be as high as 94%. This has been substantially attributed to the inadequate capacity of tendon to heal once damaged, particularly to bone at the enthesis. A number of strategies have been developed to improve tendon-bone healing, tendon-tendon healing, and tendon regeneration. Scaffolds have received considerable attention for replacement, reconstruction, or reinforcement of tendon defects but may not possess situation-specific or durable mechanical and biological characteristics. Purpose To provide an overview of the biology of tendon-bone healing and the current scaffolds used to augment rotator cuff repairs. Study Design Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. Methods A preliminary literature search of MEDLINE and Embase databases was performed using the terms rotator cuff scaffolds, rotator cuff augmentation, allografts for rotator cuff repair, xenografts for rotator cuff repair, and synthetic grafts for rotator cuff repair. Results The search identified 438 unique articles. Of these, 214 articles were irrelevant to the topic and were therefore excluded. This left a total of 224 studies that were suitable for analysis. Conclusion A number of novel biomaterials have been developed into biologically and mechanically favorable scaffolds. Few clinical trials have examined their effect on tendon-bone healing in well-designed, long-term follow-up studies with appropriate control groups. While there is still considerable work to be done before scaffolds are introduced into routine clinical practice, there does appear to be a clear indication for their use as an interpositional graft for large and massive retracted rotator cuff tears and when repairing a poor-quality degenerative tendon

    Supraspinatus detachment causes musculotendinous degeneration and a reduction in bone mineral density at the enthesis in a rat model of chronic rotator cuff degeneration

    BACKGROUND: To evaluate biological strategies that enhance tendon-bone healing in humans, it is imperative that suitable animal models accurately reproduce the pathological changes observed in the clinical setting following a tear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate rotator cuff degeneration in a rat, as well as assess the development of osteopenia at the enthesis following tendon detachment. METHODS: Eighteen female Wistar rats underwent unilateral detachment of the supraspinatus tendon. Specimens were retrieved at 4 weeks (n = 6), 6 weeks (n = 6) and 9 weeks (n = 6) postoperatively for histological analysis and peripheral quantitative computer tomography. RESULTS: Three weeks following tendon detachment, there was a significant increase in the modified Movin score, characterized by a loss of muscle mass, fatty infiltration, an increase in musculotendinous cellularity, loss of normal collagen fibre structure/arrangement, rounded tenocyte nuclei and an increase in the number of vascular bundles. This was accompanied by a reduction in bone mineral density at the tendon insertion site. After 3 weeks however, these changes were less prominent. CONCLUSIONS: The rotator cuff tendon-muscle-bone unit in a rat model 3 weeks after detachment of supraspinatus represents a valid model for investigating rotator cuff degeneration

    Effects of asymmetric contacts on single molecule conductances of HS(CH2)nCOOH in nano-electrical junctions

    A scanning tunnelling microscope has been used to determine the conductance of single molecular wires with the configuration X-bridge-X, X-bridge-Y and Y-bridge-Y (X = thiol terminus and Y = COOH). We find that for molecular wires with mixed functional groups (X-bridge-Y) the single molecule conductance decreases with respect to the comparable symmetric molecules. These differences are confirmed by theoretical computations based on a combination of density functional theory and the non-equilibrium Green functions formalism. This study demonstrates that the apparent contact resistance, as well as being highly sensitive to the type of the anchoring group is also strongly influenced by contact-asymmetry of the single molecular junction which in this case decreases the transmission. This highlights that contact asymmetry is a significant factor to be considered when evaluating nano-electrical junctions incorporating single molecules

    An Efficient Local Search for Partial Latin Square Extension Problem

    A partial Latin square (PLS) is a partial assignment of n symbols to an nxn grid such that, in each row and in each column, each symbol appears at most once. The partial Latin square extension problem is an NP-hard problem that asks for a largest extension of a given PLS. In this paper we propose an efficient local search for this problem. We focus on the local search such that the neighborhood is defined by (p,q)-swap, i.e., removing exactly p symbols and then assigning symbols to at most q empty cells. For p in {1,2,3}, our neighborhood search algorithm finds an improved solution or concludes that no such solution exists in O(n^{p+1}) time. We also propose a novel swap operation, Trellis-swap, which is a generalization of (1,q)-swap and (2,q)-swap. Our Trellis-neighborhood search algorithm takes O(n^{3.5}) time to do the same thing. Using these neighborhood search algorithms, we design a prototype iterated local search algorithm and show its effectiveness in comparison with state-of-the-art optimization solvers such as IBM ILOG CPLEX and LocalSolver.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    Episodic Source Memory over Distribution by Quantum-Like Dynamics – A Model Exploration

    In source memory studies, a decision-maker is concerned with identifying the context in which a given episodic experience occurred. A common paradigm for studying source memory is the ‘three-list’ experimental paradigm, where a subject studies three lists of words and is later asked whether a given word appeared on one or more of the studied lists. Surprisingly, the sum total of the acceptance probabilities generated by asking for the source of a word separately for each list (‘list 1?’, ‘list 2?’, ‘list 3?’) exceeds the acceptance probability generated by asking whether that word occurred on the union of the lists (‘list 1 or 2 or 3?’). The episodic memory for a given word therefore appears over distributed on the disjoint contexts of the lists. A quantum episodic memory model [QEM] was proposed by Brainerd, Wang and Reyna [8] to explain this type of result. In this paper, we apply a Hamiltonian dynamical extension of QEM for over distribution of source memory. The Hamiltonian operators are simultaneously driven by parameters for re-allocation of gist-based and verbatim-based acceptance support as subjects are exposed to the cue word in the first temporal stage, and are attenuated for description-dependence by the querying probe in the second temporal stage. Overall, the model predicts well the choice proportions in both separate list and union list queries and the over distribution effect, suggesting that a Hamiltonian dynamics for QEM can provide a good account of the acceptance processes involved in episodic memory tasks
