Dynamic power load simulator
Two independent models simulate dynamic and steady-state responses of electrical and electronic equipment under power load. One is resistance/capacitance/inductance network, and the other is variable resistance analog device. Resistance, inductance, and/or capacitance are selected by iterative process; time-domain response is compared with that of real equipment to select optimal values
Data curation standards and social science occupational information resources
Occupational information resources - data about the characteristics of different occupational positions - are widely used in the social sciences, across a range of disciplines and international contexts. They are available in many formats, most often constituting small electronic files that are made freely downloadable from academic web-pages. However there are several challenges associated with how occupational information resources are distributed to, and exploited by, social researchers. In this paper we describe features of occupational information resources, and indicate the role digital curation can play in exploiting them. We report upon the strategies used in the GEODE research project (Grid Enabled Occupational Data Environment, http://www.geode.stir.ac.uk). This project attempts to develop long-term standards for the distribution of occupational information resources, by providing a standardized framework-based electronic depository for occupational information resources, and by providing a data indexing service, based on e-Science middleware, which collates occupational information resources and makes them readily accessible to non-specialist social scientists

Suppression of Giant Magnetoresistance by a superconducting contact
We predict that current perpendicular to the plane (CPP) giant
magnetoresistance (GMR) in a phase-coherent magnetic multilayer is suppressed
when one of the contacts is superconducting. This is a consequence of a
superconductivity-induced magneto-resistive (SMR) effect, whereby the
conductance of the ferromagnetically aligned state is drastically reduced by
superconductivity. To demonstrate this effect, we compute the GMR ratio of
clean (Cu/Co)_nCu and (Cu/Co)_nPb multilayers, described by an ab-initio spd
tight binding Hamiltonian. By analyzing a simpler model with two orbitals per
site, we also show that the suppression survives in the presence of elastic

Quantum-limited mass flow of liquid He
We consider theoretically the possibility of observing unusual quantum fluid
behavior in liquid He and solutions of He in He systems
confined to nano-channels. In the case of pure ballistic flow at very low
temperature conductance will be quantized in units of . We show that
these steps should be sensitive to increases in temperature. We also use of a
random scattering matrix simulation to study flow with diffusive wall
scattering. Universal conductance fluctuations analogous to those seen in
electron systems should then be observable. Finally we consider the possibility
of the cross-over to a one-dimensional system at sufficiently low temperature
where the system could form a Luttinger liquid
Superconducting Proximity Effect and Universal Conductance Fluctuations
We examine universal conductance fluctuations (UCFs) in mesoscopic
normal-superconducting-normal (N-S-N) structures using a numerical solution of
the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equation. We discuss two cases depending on the
presence (``open'' structure) or absence (``closed'' structure) of
quasiparticle transmission. In contrast to N-S structures, where the onset of
superconductivity increases fluctuations, we find that UCFs are suppressed by
superconductivity for N-S-N structures. We demonstrate that the fluctuations in
``open'' and ``closed'' structures exhibit distinct responses to an applied
magnetic field and to an imposed phase variation of the superconducting order

Probing electron acceleration and X-ray emission in laser-plasma accelerator
While laser-plasma accelerators have demonstrated a strong potential in the
acceleration of electrons up to giga-electronvolt energies, few experimental
tools for studying the acceleration physics have been developed. In this paper,
we demonstrate a method for probing the acceleration process. A second laser
beam, propagating perpendicular to the main beam is focused in the gas jet few
nanosecond before the main beam creates the accelerating plasma wave. This
second beam is intense enough to ionize the gas and form a density depletion
which will locally inhibit the acceleration. The position of the density
depletion is scanned along the interaction length to probe the electron
injection and acceleration, and the betatron X-ray emission. To illustrate the
potential of the method, the variation of the injection position with the
plasma density is studied
The s-process branching at 185W
The neutron capture cross section of the unstable nucleus 185W has been
derived from experimental photoactivation data of the inverse reaction
186W(gamma,n)185W. The new result of sigma = (687 +- 110) mbarn confirms the
theoretically predicted neutron capture cross section of 185W of sigma = 700
mbarn at kT = 30 keV. A neutron density in the classical s-process of n_n =
(3.8 +0.9 -0.8} * 1e8 cm-3 is derived from the new data for the 185W branching.
In a stellar s-process model one finds a significant overproduction of the
residual s-only nucleus 186Os.Comment: ApJ, in pres
Tuning the electron energy by controlling the density perturbation position in laser plasma accelerators
A density perturbation produced in an underdense plasma was used to improve
the quality of electron bunches produced in the laser-plasma wakefield
acceleration scheme. Quasi-monoenergetic electrons were generated by controlled
injection in the longitudinal density gradients of the density perturbation. By
tuning the position of the density perturbation along the laser propagation
axis, a fine control of the electron energy from a mean value of 60 MeV to 120
MeV has been demonstrated with a relative energy-spread of 15 +/- 3.6%,
divergence of 4 +/- 0.8 mrad and charge of 6 +/- 1.8 pC.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Overcoming decoherence in the collapse and revival of spin Schr\"odinger cats
In addition to being a very interesting quantum phenomenon, Schr\"odinger cat
swapping has the potential for application in the preparation of quantum states
that could be used in metrology and other quantum processing. We study in
detail the effects of field decoherence on a cat-swapping system comprising a
set of identical qubits, or spins, all coupled to a field mode. We demonstrate
that increasing the number of spins actually mitigates the effects of field
decoherence on the collapse and revival of a spin Schr\"odinger cat, which
could be of significant utility in quantum metrology and other quantum
