    Diversity techniques for blind channel equalization in mobile communications

    A blind algorithm for channel distortion compensation is presented which can be employed in spatial or temporal diversity receivers. The proposed technique can be used in frequency selective and frequency flat fading mobile channels, using burst transmission schemes in the first case and OFDM modulation in the second one.     Transform modulations for mobile communications

    A new modulation scheme called transform modulations is proposed which improves the system performance in frequency-flat fading mobile channels. They ameliorate the effect of the fadings over the transmitted signal by spreading the information in time, using a linear transform operator. The design of this scheme is discussed and its advantages are shown by means of simulations.     Effects of STZ induced hyperglycemia and hyperlipemia on PPARgamma and ABCA1 in a hamster model of atherogenesis

    Diabetes mellitus accelerates atherogenesis, but the exact mechanisms involved are unknown. This study examined the effects of hyperglycemia on the inflammatory transcription factor peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma), known to be involved in atherogenesis, and the ATP binding cassette A1 (ABCA1) protein that is a downstream product of PPARgamma. ABCA1 is a membrane bound transporter that is involved in reverse cholesterol transport via high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Hamsters were divided into two groups; hyperlipemic animals fed a high fat/high cholesterol control diet (C) and hyperlipemic/hyperglycemic animals that received the high fat diet and were administered streptozotocin. Half of the hamsters (23) in each group were sacrificed at 8 weeks and the other half at 24 weeks. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

    Blind equalization based on spatial and temporal diversity in block coded modulations

    Linear block codes can be applied in spatial and/or temporal diversity receivers in order to develop high performance schemes for blind equalization in mobile communications. The proposed technique uses the structure of the encoded transmitted information (with redundancy) to achieve equalization schemes based on a deterministic criterion. Simulations show that the proposed technique is more efficient than other schemes that follow similar equalizer structures. In this paper, we emphasize the practical aspects of getting location-enhanced applications deployed on existing devices, such as laptops, tablets, PDAs, and cell phones, without the need to purchase additional sensors or install special infrastructure. Our goal is to provide readers with an overview of the practical considerations that are currently being faced, and the research challenges that lie ahead.
