    In Sickness and in Wealth:Psychological and Sexual Costs of Income Comparison in Marriage

    As the percentage of wives outearning their husbands grows, the traditional social norm of the male breadwinner is challenged. The upward income comparison of the husband may cause psychological distress that affects partners’ mental and physical health in ways that affect decisions on marriage, divorce, and careers. This article studies this impact through sexual and mental health problems. Using wage and prescription medication data from Denmark, we implement a regression discontinuity design to show that men outearned by their wives are more likely to use erectile dysfunction medication than their male breadwinner counterparts, even when this inequality is small. Breadwinner wives suffer increased insomnia/anxiety medication usage, with similar effects for men. We find no effects for unmarried couples or for men who earned less than their fiancée prior to marriage. Our results suggest that social norms play important roles in dictating how individuals respond to upward social comparisons. </jats:p

    USM3D Unstructured Grid Solutions for CAWAPI at NASA LaRC

    In support the Cranked Arrow Wing Aerodynamic Project International (CAWAPI) to improve the Technology Readiness Level of flow solvers by comparing results with measured F-16XL-1 flight data, NASA Langley employed the TetrUSS unstructured grid solver, USM3D, to obtain solutions for all seven flight conditions of interest. A newly available solver version that incorporates a number of turbulence models, including the two-equation linear and non-linear k-epsilon, was used in this study. As a first test, a choice was made to utilize only a single grid resolution with the solver for the simulation of the different flight conditions. Comparisons are presented with three turbulence models in USM3D, flight data for surface pressure, boundary-layer profiles, and skin-friction results, as well as limited predictions from other solvers. A result of these comparisons is that the USM3D solver can be used in an engineering environment to predict flow physics on a complex configuration at flight Reynolds numbers with a two-equation linear k-epsilon turbulence model

    The Influence of Tropical Cyclones on Droughts and Warm Season Precipitation in Tennessee and Kentucky

    The Southeast United States during summer and fall is often affected by droughts and tropical cyclones. Both phenomena rank among the most expensive of natural hazards, although droughts are not as feared by the public as hurricanes. When a tropical cyclone causes a pendulum swing from drought to wet conditions, it is known as a “drought-busting tropical cyclone.” The majority of the research related to drought busting tropical cyclones investigates only the storms during their tropical cyclone phase, which covers the southeastern states that have boundaries adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. An unanswered question from this literature is whether or not these findings apply to the interior southeastern states that have no ocean boundaries, where there is an increase in the probability of a drought-busting tropical cyclone transitioning to an extra-tropical cyclone. This thesis research attempts to determine the impact of drought-busting cyclones on the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. Research findings in this thesis revealed that droughts occur more frequently in the eastern climate divisions of the study area, 2-3 tropical cyclones affect the study area each year, and 6% of warm-season precipitation comes from tropical cyclones or their remnants. Chi-Square analysis and Kruskal-Wallis tests suggest that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) has statistically significant relationships with drought frequency, tropical cyclone precipitation, and extra-tropical cyclone precipitation in several climate divisions. While the literature argues that drought-busting tropical cyclones are common in coastal locations, they were found to be rare in Kentucky and Tennessee

    Ships produce vortices and air-wakes while either underway or stationary in a wind. These flow fields can be detrimental to the conduction of air operations in that they can adversely impact the air vehicles and flight crews. There are potential solutions to these problems for both frigates/destroyers and carriers through the use of novel vortex flow or flow control devices. This appendix highlights several devices which may have application and points out that traditional wind-tunnel testing using smoke, laser-vapor screen, and Particle Image Velocimetry can be useful in sorting out the effectiveness of different devices

    Gait-based gender classification using persistent homology

    In this paper, a topological approach for gait-based gender recognition is presented. First, a stack of human silhouettes, extracted by background subtraction and thresholding, were glued through their gravity centers, forming a 3D digital image I. Second, different filters (i.e. particular orders of the simplices) are applied on ∂ K(I) (a simplicial complex obtained from I) which capture relations among the parts of the human body when walking. Finally, a topological signature is extracted from the persistence diagram according to each filter. The measure cosine is used to give a similarity value between topological signatures. The novelty of the paper is a notion of robustness of the provided method (which is also valid for gait recognition). Three experiments are performed using all human-camera view angles provided in CASIA-B database. The first one evaluates the named topological signature obtaining 98.3% (lateral view) of correct classification rates, for gender identification. The second one shows results for different human-camera distances according to training and test (i.e. training with a human-camera distance and test with a different one). The third one shows that upper body is more discriminative than lower body

    Evaluating Interaction of Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells with Functionally Integrated Three-Dimensional Microenvironments

    Despite advances in ex vivo expansion of cord blood-derived hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (CB-HSPC), challenges still remain regarding the ability to obtain, from a single unit, sufficient numbers of cells to treat an adolescent or adult patient. We and others have shown that CB-HSPC can be expanded ex vivo in two-dimensional (2D) cultures, but the absolute percentage of the more primitive stem cells decreases with time. During development, the fetal liver is the main site of HSPC expansion. Therefore, here we investigated, in vitro, the outcome of interactions of primitive HSPC with surrogate fetal liver environments. We compared bioengineered liver constructs made from a natural three-dimensional-liver-extracellular-matrix (3D-ECM) seeded with hepatoblasts, fetal liver-derived (LvSt), or bone marrow-derived stromal cells, to their respective 2D culture counterparts. We showed that the inclusion of cellular components within the 3D-ECM scaffolds was necessary for maintenance of HSPC viability in culture, and that irrespective of the microenvironment used, the 3D-ECM structures led to the maintenance of a more primitive subpopulation of HSPC, as determined by flow cytometry and colony forming assays. In addition, we showed that the timing and extent of expansion depends upon the biological component used, with LvSt providing the optimal balance between preservation of primitive CB HSPC and cellular differentiation.     AbstractHigh-pressure liquid chromatography analysis of oligosaccharides from placentas allowed the diagnosis of α-mannosidosis in three litters of kittens. The chromatography also afforded a detailed comparison of the oligosaccharide pattern and levels in placenta, liver, brain, urine and ocular fluid of the affected animals. In all cases, two series of compounds were observed, with one or two residues of N-acetylglucosamine at the reducing terminus, respectively, and between two and nine mannose residues. This pattern is unlike that of human mannosidosis, and resembles that of ruminants, except that the major oligosaccharide contains three mannose residues instead of two
