SWSDesigner: The Graphical Interface of ODESWS

    Get PDF
ODESWS is a development environment to design Semantic Web Services (SWS) at the knowledge level. ODESWS describe the service following a problem-solving approach in which the SWS are modelled using tasks, to represent the SWS functional features, and methods, to describe the SWS internal structure. In this paper, we describe the ODESWS graphical interface (called SWSDesinger). This interface enables users to design SWS independently of the semantic markup language in which the service will be implemented, and once the design has been export the service to an SWS implementation languag

A Framework for Design and Composition of Semantic Web Services

    Get PDF
Semantic Web Services (SWS) are Web Services (WS) whose description is semantically enhanced with markup languages (e.g., OWL-S). This semantic description will enable external agents and programs to discover, compose and invoke SWSs. However, as a previous step to the specification of SWSs in a language, it must be designed at a conceptual level to guarantee its correctness and avoid inconsistencies among its internal components. In this paper, we present a framework for design and (semi) automatic composition of SWSs at a language-independent and knowledge level. This framework is based on a stack of ontologies that (1) describe the different parts of a SWS; and (2) contain a set of axioms that are really design rules to be verified by the ontology instances. Based on these ontologies, design and composition of SWSs can be viewed as the correct instantiation of the ontologies themselves. Once these instances have been created they will be exported to SWS languages such as OWL-S

Spontaneous emergence of contrarian-like behaviour in an opinion spreading model

We introduce stochastic driving in the Sznajd model of opinion spreading. This stochastic effect is meant to mimic a social temperature, so that agents can take random decisions with a varying probability. We show that a stochastic driving has a tremendous impact on the system dynamics as a whole by inducing an order-disorder nonequilibrium phase transition. Interestingly, under certain conditions, this stochastic dynamics can spontaneously lead to agents in the system who are analogous to Galam's contarians.Comment: 4 eps figs, EuroPhys Lett styl

Making the match between content and foreign language: A case study on university students’ opinions towards CLIL

    Get PDF
The present article intends to show the positive evaluation of post-graduate university students at a Spanish university after the curricular integration experience and the application of CLIL scaffolding techniques. It also aims to identify areas of methodological improvements and recommendations in the application of CLIL in the referred programme as well as in higher education contexts. The researchers used a cross-sectional study to survey the students’ opinion on ICL after the integration of the syllabus of one foreign language subject and another content subject in a post-graduate degree at a private Spanish university in Madrid (Spain). The results point to a positive view of CLIL from Spanish higher education post-graduate students. The survey results also seem to show the students’ confidence in CLIL for their English-led classes aids them to simultaneously increase their foreign language acquisition and their nonlinguistic contents learning. However, researchers detected certain linguistic scaffolding aspects appear to need further students’ training and teachers’ methodological adjustments, as they can negatively affect learners’ engagement and hence, their learning outcomes. The authors note more research is needed to collect data from a wider population and increase the reliability of the results.DOI: 10.18870/hlrc.v5i1.23

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS FOR SOFTWARE DATA AND DOD ACQUISITION POLICIES AS THEY PERTAIN TO SMALL BUSINESSES

    Get PDF
Intellectual property (IP) rights play an important role in DOD acquisition by providing a framework for competition, innovation, and technological trajectory. Poorly defined data rights can be problematic for the DOD and can strangle innovation that might otherwise be useful to the public. Small businesses that lack adequate resources required to cater to the extensive acquisition requirements of the government may be subjected to unfair competition, slow or no growth opportunities, and prejudiced innovation. Furthermore, small businesses might face challenges in complying with the extensive DOD acquisition parameters, thus disincentivizing them from engaging in business with the government. This research explores the effectiveness of the current DOD acquisition policies and procedures governing intellectual property rights and examines how these data rights policies apply to and affect small businesses. The methodology herein includes an in-depth literature review of existing legislative and policy initiatives and their effectiveness in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The findings determine that the current DOD policies and procedures are disadvantageous to small businesses and create a negative perception of the DOD acquisition process. This research recommends reframing the existing training and continuing education programs of the DOD acquisition workforce in order to improve and encourage successful IP acquisitions with small businesses.Lieutenant, United States NavyCivilian, Harmony Technology Services IncApproved for public release. Methods of isolation and identification of pathogenic and potential pathogenic bacteria from skins and tannery effluents

    Get PDF
Currently there is no standard protocol available within the leather industry to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria from hides, skins or tannery effluent. This study was therefore carried out to identify simple but effective methods for isolation and identification of bacterial pathogens from the effluent and skins during leather processing. Identification methods based on both phenotypic and genotypic characteristics were investigated. Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used as indicator bacteria to evaluate the isolation and identification methods. Decontaminated calfskins were inoculated with a pure culture of the above mentioned bacterial species followed by a pre-tanning and chromium tanning processes. Effluent samples were collected and skins were swabbed at the end of each processing stage. Bacterial identification was carried out based on the phenotypic characteristics; such as colony appearance on selective solid media, cell morphology following a standard Gram-staining and spore staining techniques, and biochemical reactions, e.g., the ability of a bacterial species to ferment particular sugars and ability to produce certain enzymes. Additionally, an identification system based on bacterial phenotypic characteristics, known as Biolog® system was applied. A pulsed-filed gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method for bacterial DNA fingerprinting was also evaluated and used for the identification of the inoculated bacteria. The methods described in the study were found to be effective for the identification of pathogenic bacteria from skins and effluent
