    'Support our networking and help us belong!': listening to beginning secondary school science teachers

    This study, drawing on the voice of beginning teachers, seeks to illuminate their experiences of building professional relationships as they become part of the teaching profession. A networking perspective was taken to expose and explore the use of others during the first three years of a teacher’s workplace experience. Three case studies, set within a wider sample of 11 secondary school science teachers leaving one UK university’s PostGraduate Certificate in Education, were studied. The project set out to determine the nature of the networks used by teachers in terms of both how they were being used for their own professional development and perceptions of how they were being used by others in school. Affordances and barriers to networking were explored using notions of identity formation through social participation. The focus of the paper is on how the teachers used others to help shape their sense of belonging to this, their new workplace. The paper develops ideas from network theories to argue that membership of the communities are a subset of the professional inter‐relationships teachers utilise for their professional development. During their first year of teaching, eight teachers were interviewed, completing 13 semi‐structured interviews. This was supplemented in Year 2 by a questionnaire survey of their experiences. In the third year of the programme, 11 teachers (including the original sample of eight) were surveyed using a network mapping tool in which they represented their communications with people, groups and resources. Finally, three of the teachers (common to both samples) were then interviewed specifically about their networking practices and experiences using the generation of their network map as a stimulated recall focus. The implications of the analysis of these accounts are that these beginning teachers did not perceive of themselves wholly as novices and that their personal aspirations to increase participation in practical science, develop a career or work for pupils holistically did not always sit comfortably with the school communities into which they were being accommodated. While highlighting the importance of trust and respect in establishing relationships, these teachers’ accounts highlight the importance of finding ‘peers’ from whom they can find support and with whom they can reflect and potentially collaborate towards developing practice. They also raise questions about who these ‘peers’ might be and where they might be found

    The interplay between experiential and traditional learning for competency development

    Extensive research demonstrated that firms may pursue several advantages in hiring individuals with the set of emotional, social, and cognitive (ESC) competencies that are most critical for business success. Therefore, the role of education for competency development is becoming paramount. Prior studies have questioned the traditional methods, grounded in the lecture format, as a way to effectively develop ESC competencies. Alternatively, they propose experiential learning techniques that involve participants in dedicated courses or activities. Despite the insights provided by these studies, they do not take into account a comprehensive set of learning methods and their combined effect on the individual's competency portfolio within educational programs that aim to transfer primarily professional skills. Our study aims to fill these gaps by investigating the impact of the interplay between different learning methods on ESC competencies through a sample of students enrolled in the first year of a master's degree program. After providing a classification of three learning methods [traditional learning (TL), individual experiential learning (IEL), and social experiential learning (SEL)], the study delves into their combined influence on ESC competencies, adopting the Artificial Neural Network. Contrary to prior studies, our results provide counterintuitive evidence, suggesting that TL needs to be implemented together, on the one hand, with IEL to achieve a significant effect on emotional competencies and, on the other hand, with SEL to have an impact on social competencies. Moreover, IEL plays a prominent role in stimulating cognitive competencies. Our research contributes to educational literature by providing new insights on the effective combination of learning methods that can be adopted into programs that transfer technical knowledge and skills to promote behavioral competencies

    Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Repair of Extraperitoneal Ureteral Inguinal Hernia with Mesh Placement.

    Background: Ureter involvement within indirect hernias is a rare phenomenon usually identified incidentally during herniorrhaphy. Even more rare are extraperitoneal ureteral inguinal hernias, which represent about 20% of these cases and are characterized by a substantial amount of extraperitoneal fat in the hernia defect, the absence of a peritoneal sac, and associated with hydroureteronephrosis and nephroptosis. To date, repair of ureteral inguinal hernias has been performed exclusively using open surgical techniques. We report the first case of successful robot-assisted laparoscopic repair of this rare presentation. Case Presentation: A morbidly obese 70-year-old male with an unremarkable surgical and urological history presents with a 15-year history of nonpainful, enlarging right scrotal swelling measuring 25 cm in diameter. CT imaging revealed right nephroptosis and a hernia defect containing a dilated right ureter looping into the scrotum surrounded by significant extraperitoneal fat. Retrograde pyelography and ureteral catheter placement confirmed a \u3e100 cm ureter. The patient underwent a robot-assisted laparoscopic repair. The inferior epigastric artery, spermatic cord vessels, vas deferens, and ureter were identified. The defect was reduced using external scrotal pressure and reinforced with ProGrip™ self-fixating laparoscopic mesh. The patient was discharged 2 days later following an uneventful postoperative course. Conclusion: Although rare and usually incidentally discovered, extraperitoneal ureteral inguinal hernias can be identified preoperatively by the astute clinician. Preoperative identification allows for improved surgical planning, including a minimally invasive approach. Robot-assisted laparoscopic repair with mesh placement is a feasible alternative to traditional open techniques
