    International audienceThe Maxwell equations in the MHD limit in heterogeneous axisymmetric domains composed of conducting and non-conducting regions are solved by using a mixed Fourier/Lagrange finite element technique. Finite elements are used in the meridian plane and Fourier modes are used in the azimuthal direction. Parallelization is made with respect to the Fourier modes. Continuity conditions across interfaces are enforced using an interior penalty technique. The performance of the method is illustrated on kinematic and full dynamo configurations

    Effects of conductivity jumps in the envelope of a kinematic dynamo flow

    International audienceThis Note reports on numerical simulations of the kinematic dynamo action in a test flow modeling the Von Kármán Sodium (VKS) experiment performed at CEA-Cadarache. We show that the conductivity of the vessel greatly influences the critical magnetic Reynolds number. These effects are dramatically amplified as the ratio of the conductivity of the vessel to that of the sodium increases from 1 to 5. To cite this article: R. Laguerre et al., C. R.     Impact of impellers on the axisymmetric magnetic mode in the VKS2 dynamo experiment

    In the von Kármán Sodium 2 (VKS2) successful dynamo experiment of September2006, the observed magnetic field showed a strong axisymmetric component, implying that nonaxisymmetric components of the flow field were acting. By modeling the induction effect of the spiraling flow between the blades of the impellers in a kinematic dynamo code, we find that the axisymmetric magnetic mode is excited. The control parameters are the magnetic Reynolds number of the mean flow, the coefficient measuring the induction effect α, and the type of boundary conditions. We show that using realistic values of α, the observed critical magnetic Reynolds number, Rmc 32, can be reached easily with ferromagnetic boundary conditions. We conjecture that the dynamo action achieved in this experiment may not be related to the turbulence in the bulk of the flow, but rather to the α effect induced by the impellers. © 2008 The American Physical Society.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Treatment with Sunitinib Enabled Complete Resection of Massive Lymphadenopathy not Previously Amenable to Excision in a Patient with Renal Cell Carcinoma.

    International audienceWe present a case of previously unresectable lymphadenopathy in a patient with renal cell carcinoma treated with sunitinib. Complete resection of a 15-cm left renal cell carcinoma was initially impossible due to massive retroperitoneal disease and encasement of the great vessels and mesenteric vessels. Residual retroperitoneal disease from a radical nephrectomy was treated with the oral, multitargeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, sunitinib. Tumour shrinkage following five cycles of treatment allowed uncomplicated complete resection of the lymphadenopathy. Follow-up after 6 mo showed no evidence of disease recurrence

    International audienceOBJECTIVE: To determine the prognostic significance of the neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and the matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: NGAL and MMP-9 expression were quantified by immunohistochemistry in clear renal cell carcinoma tissues and in sera by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Elisa). Results were associated with clinicopathologic data. RESULTS: Seventy-four patients operated for CCRCC in Rennes between 2003 and 2009 were included. High concentrations of NGAL-MMP-9 complex in serum were associated with short progression free survival (PFS) (33.3 months versus 47.3 months, P=0.016) and poor overall survival (42.5 months versus 51.9 months, P<0.047). High NGAL concentrations in serum were also associated with shorter PFS (13.6 months versus 41.6 months, P=0.04). However, no NGAL expression was observed in renal tumor cells. Interestingly, NGAL was expressed by neutrophils infiltrating CCRCC and we showed that the density of NGAL expressing neutrophils was associated with pejorative PFS and survival (36.9months versus 56.1 months, P<0.006). CONCLUSION: In this study, we showed the pejorative significance of NGAL-MMP-9 complex and NGAL rates in serum of CCRCC. We also confirmed that density of NGAL expressing neutrophils in CCRCC was associated with poor outcome
