A Phenomenological Exploration into the Resiliency of Prostate Cancer Survivors

    Get PDF
Scholarly articles related to the physical and emotional effects of prostate cancer treatment and survivorship are abundant. However, few researchers have explored resiliency of prostate cancer survivors through their recovery and survivorship experience. There is a gap in the literature regarding resilience through the lived experiences of prostate cancer survivors. Counselor educators could be better prepared to teach counselors to promote the resilience needs of prostate cancer survivors. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of prostate cancer survivors. Coding analysis of data collected from interviews of 7 participants generated 3 major themes and 30 subthemes of experiences. Themes included experiences and feelings surrounding the cancer diagnosis, descriptions of resilience, and the personal growth the participants gained from their experiences. The results of this study give voice to their challenges and offer insight into how prostate cancer survivors find meaning while adapting constructively to adversity and resilience. A clearer understanding of these experiences may promote understanding of the prostate cancer experience for men, offer insight for promoting resilience among prostate cancer survivors, and give clues to the experiences of other populations responding to cancer

Tackle Prostate Cancer: A Doctoral Student’s Response

This first hand reflection as a doctoral counseling student narrates mthe author\u27s social action response after learning of his diagnosis with prostate cancer. The author discusses his experience, reviews facts about prostate cancer, and applies Bandura’s (1977) Social Cognitive Theory, a SWOT analysis, and Eriksen’s (1997) social action stages to mhisactivities. These illustrate how he used his story and unique community resources to create awareness and raise funds through an event at a high school football game. Possibilities for additional advocacy events are also discussed

The impact of mycorrhizal symbiosis on tomato fruit quality

    Get PDF
The project investigates the potential impact of mycorrhizal fungi, which have been acknowledged as a new class of bio-fertilizers, on the quality of vegetables. To verify such a hypothesis, we selected tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) as a model plant to examine whether the beneficial effects of mycorrhizal fungi on plant development may be extended to some qualitative fruit features. As a second step, five genes related to carotenoid biosynthesis and volatile compounds were selected. Their expression was investigated through a real-time RT-PCR comparison of mycorrhized and non-mycorrhized plants

    Space-Efficient Prime Knot 7-Mosaics

The concepts of tile number and space-efficiency for knot mosaics were first explored by Heap and Knowles (arXiv:1702.06462), where they determined the possible tile numbers and space-efficient layouts for every prime knot with mosaic number 6 or less. In this paper, we extend those results to prime knots with mosaic number 7

Cannabinoid Receptor Involvement in Stress-Induced Cocaine Reinstatement: Potential Interaction with Noradrenergic Pathways

This study examined the role of endocannabinoid signaling in stress-induced reinstatement of cocaine seeking and explored the interaction between noradrenergic and endocannabinergic systems in the process. A well-validated preclinical model for human relapse, the rodent conditioned place preference assay, was used. Cocaine-induced place preference was established in C57BL/6 mice using injections of 15 mg/kg cocaine. Following extinction of preference for the cocaine-paired environment, reinstatement of place preference was determined following 6 min of swim stress or cocaine injection (15 mg/kg, i.p.). The role of endocannabinoid signaling was studied using the cannabinoid antagonist AM-251 (3 mg/kg, i.p.). Another cohort of mice was tested for reinstatement following administration of the cannabinoid agonist CP 55,940 (10, 20, or 40 ÎĽg/kg, i.p.). The alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist BRL-44408 (5 mg/kg, i.p.) with or without CP 55,940 (20 ÎĽg/kg) was administered to a third group of mice. We found that: (1) AM-251 blocked forced swim-induced, but not cocaine-induced, reinstatement of cocaine-seeking behavior; (2) the cannabinoid agonist CP 55,940 did not reinstate cocaine-seeking behavior when administered alone but did synergize with a non-reinstating dose of the alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist BRL-44408 to cause reinstatement. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that stress exposure triggers the endogenous activation of CB1 receptors and that activation of the endocannabinoid system is required for the stress-induced relapse of the mice to cocaine seeking. Further, the data suggest that the endocannabinoid system interacts with noradrenergic mechanisms to influence stress-induced reinstatement of cocaine-seeking behavior
