    IMAGES I, MD101: A coring cruise of the R/V Marion Dufresne in the North Atlantic Ocean and Norwegian Sea

    IMAGES coordinated a first international cruise in June and July 1995 over the North Atlantic and Norwegian sea on board the French RN Mm'ion Dufresne (MD 10 I, Brest - Stornoway (Lewis Island) - St-Pierre - Azores - Marseille). Its main scientific objective was the collection of giant piston cores on rapidly sedimenting drifts and continental margins of the North Atlantic ocean and Norwegian Sea, along the track of the main thermohaline circulation. The cruise crossed the North-East Atlantic margins, the Feni Drift, the Scottish, North Faeroes and Norwegian margins (to nON), the Iceland South-East margins, the Gardar Drift, the NAMOC Channel, the Newfoundland margin, the Bermuda rise, the mid Atlantic ridge, and the Azores and Iberian margins. Additional objectives covered: - the contribution of Mediterranean waters to the North Atlantic intermediate waters, with 5 cores recovered across the slopes of the Iberian margin; - the evolution of the NAMOC channel, in the deep North-West Atlantic basin, in relation to the growths and decays of the Laurentide ice sheet (8 Kullenberg and gravity cores). This was the maiden cruise of the new Mm'ion Dujresne, just 2 weeks out from her Le Havre shipyard. The ship had a very small number of problems, taking into account the number of things which were not ready just a few days before the departure. Two days were lost for engine problems. 70 scientists, students and technicians from 22 institutions (13 countries) participated to at least one of the three legs. 43 cores (mean length over 30 meters) have been retrieved during the cruise, described and measured for magnetic susceptibility, p-wave velocity, y density and spectral light reflectance. The longest core, MD 95-2036 (52.64 m) was retrieved at 4461 m water depth on the Bermuda Rise. It covers about 150 kyr with a sedimentation rate over 30 cm/kyr. The Calypso corer worked properly, once a few problems encountered at the be"innin" of the cruise had been solved (i.e. sliced or imploded PVC liner). This report presents preliminary results, mostly obtained on board: core descriptions, physical properties and micro-paleontological stratigraphy. Color reflectance (between 40° and 55°N) and magnetic susceptibility (between 50° and 700N) have been used for direct tuning of the time scales by cyclo-stratigraphy in the precession and obliquity bands.     High-resolution pleistocene diatom biostratigraphy of site 983 and correlations with isotope stratigraphy

    International audienceHigh accumulation rates and the presence of well-preserved, abundant diatoms in Site 983 sediments from the Gardar Drift gave us the opportunity to refine the Pleistocene diatom biostratigraphic resolution of the high-latitude North Atlantic. Eight Pleistocene diatom datum events are identified and, for the first time, tied directly to the oxygen isotope record and paleomagnetic stratigraphy of Site 983. These datum events are (1) the last occurrence (LO) of Proboscia curvirostris at 0.3 Ma, (2) the LO of Thalassiosira jouseae at 0.3 Ma, (3) the LO of Nitzschia reinholdii at 0.6 Ma, (4) the LO of Nitzschia fossilis at 0.68 Ma, (5) the LO of Nitzschia seminae at 0.84 Ma, (6) the first occurrence (FO) of N. seminae at 1.25 Ma, (7) the FO of Proboscia curvirostris at 1.53 Ma, and (8) the FO of Pseudoeunotia doliolus at 1.89 Ma. Most of these datums are found to be synchronous between the middle and high latitudes of the North Atlantic and the North Pacific. On the basis of these datums, four highlatitude North Atlantic diatom zones are proposed for the Pleistocene. The record of diatom abundance and preservation at Site 983 gives evidence for the influence of fluctuating Pleistocene climatic conditions on diatom productivity in the high-latitude North Atlantic

    O estudo mostrou que a produtividade oceânica ao largo da costa ocidental Portuguesa é maior durante as fases frias do Estádio 5 e durante os Estádios Glaciares 4 e 6, sugerindo uma maior disponibilidade de nutrientes durante esses períodos. Os dados de d13C, variações da granulometria e parâmetros magnéticos, sugerem correntes de fundo mais fortes durante os períodos frios, concordantes com uma maior contribuição das correntes de fundo austrais na margem Este do Atlântico Norte. Os nossos dados sugerem uma ligação entre a variação da produtividade oceânica e a circulação termohalina

    Phase-shifting technique for improving the imaging capacity of sparse-aperture optical interferometers

    In this paper, we describe the principle of a multi-aperture interferometer that uses a phase-shifting technique and is suitable for quick, snapshot imaging of astrophysical objects at extreme angular resolution through Fourier inversion. A few advantages of the proposed design are highlighted, among which are radiometric efficiency, Field of View equivalent to those of Fizeau interferometers, and a preliminary calibration procedure allowing characterization of instrumental errors. For large telescope numbers, the proposed design also results in considerable simplification of the optical and mechanical design. Numerical simulations suggest that it should be possible to couple hundreds of telescopes on a single 4K x 4K detector array, using only conventional optical components or emerging technologies.Comment: 40 pages and 9 figure

    Future development of apricot blossom blight under climate change in Southern France

    International audienceClimate change will have several consequences for agro-systems, one of which will concern changes to the development of pathogens. Because of the losses it causes, particularly in organic farming, Monilinia laxa is an important pathogen affecting apricot crops. This study focuses on the consequences of climate change regarding blossom and twig blight (Monilinia laxa) of apricot. To achieve this, a Climatic Index of cumulated Blight risk (CIB) was built, to obtain the weighted sum of blossom blight incidence throughout the blooming period. An epidemiological model to calculate the incidence of blossom blight during every potentially infectious episode and based on biological parameters, was calibrated using a trap pot experiment where trees were placed in orchards and subject to various meteorological conditions. The CIB derived from this model was evaluated on field data, and was shown to be a robust and useful tool to predict the effects of climate change on the development of apricot blight. Then, using the CIB with a phenological model to predict blooming periods in the future, we estimated the risks of apricot blight until 2100 on four contrasted apricot cultivars and in three geographical zones under climate change scenarios RCP 4.5 and 8.5. This study revealed different effects of climate change depending on the cultivar and altitude. Apricot trees would bloom earlier (up to a difference of 50 days between 1950 and 2100) under climate change. Under the combined effects of these shifts of blooming period and changing climatic conditions, late cultivars such as Bergarouge might see a reduction in the risk of blossom blight (down to 31%) because of warmer but dryer blooming periods. Other varieties (e.g.: Bergeron) could experience an increase in this risk by up to 27% with a shift of the blooming period towards rainier conditions at the highest altitudes. The results of this study could be used to anticipate future changes as well as be used at present as a decision-support tool for farmers

    Impact of the Thrombectomy Trials on the Management and Outcome of Large Vessel Stroke: Data From the Lyon Stroke Center

    Introduction: Randomized trials (RT) have recently validated the superiority of thrombectomy over standard medical care, including intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). However, data on their impact on routine clinical care remains scarce.Methods: Using a prospective observational registry, we assessed: (1) the clinical and radiological characteristics of all consecutive patients treated with thrombectomy; (2) the outcome of all patients with M1 occlusion (treated with thrombectomy or IVT alone). Two periods were compared: before (2013–2014) and after (2015–2016) the publication of RT.Results: Endovascular procedures significantly increased between the two periods (N = 82 vs. 314, p < 0.0001). In 2015–2016, patients were older (median [IQR]: 69 [57-80]; vs. 66 [53-74]; p = 0.008), had shorter door-to-clot times (69 [47-95]; vs. 110 [83-155]; p < 0.0001) resulting in a trend toward shorter delay from symptom onset to reperfusion (232 [185-300]; vs. 250 [200-339]; p = 0.1), with higher rates of reperfusion (71 vs. 48%; p = 0.0001). Conversely, no significant differences in baseline NIHSS scores, ASPECTS, delay to IVT or intracranial hemorrhage were found. In 2015–2016, patients with M1 occlusion were treated with thrombectomy more often than in 2013–2014 (87 vs. 32%, respectively; p < 0.0001), with a significant improvement in clinical outcome (shift analysis, lower modified Rankin scale scores: OR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.10–2.57; p = 0.017).Conclusion: Following the publication of RT, thrombectomy was rapidly implemented with significant improvements in intrahospital delay and reperfusion rates. Treatment with thrombectomy increased with better clinical outcomes in patients with M1 occlusion
