Causes and Solutions for High Direct Care Staff Turnover

    Get PDF
This quantitative research project explores the reasons and solutions for the high rates of direct care staff turnover. Emails were sent out to social service agency supervisors asking for their approval to allow their employees to participate in an online survey about direct care staff turnover. Agencies that agreed to participate were then emailed a script and a consent form with instructions to email both the script and the consent form to their employees. The ten question online survey explored the direct care staff\u27s opinions on topics such as compensation, support and training. Additionally, there was a qualitative question at the end of the survey asking for direct care staff\u27s input as to possible solutions to reduce direct care staff turnover. Twenty-six individuals participated in the survey. Answers were analyzed and entered into SPSS in order to find correlations in the data. Themes were identified amongst the responses to the qualitative question. A majority of the respondents did not feel they received adequate support from their supervisor or adequate compensation for the work that they do. Answers showed that direct care staff who participated in the survey attributed inadequate compensation as the largest contributor to the high rates of direct care staff turnover. The answers revealed no statistically significant data however, some correlations approached statistical significance. Results from this quantitative research project were consistent with pre-existing literature

The bone mineral density (BMD) of the distal femur decreases by 16-36% within one year after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) because of the femoral component's stress-shielding effect. The aim of this prospective study was to determine the quantitative change from the baseline BMD in the distal femur 1 year after patellofemoral arthroplasty using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).Journal Articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Agroecossistemas e zonas de amortecimento vinculante. O caso da Reserva Provincial Parque Luro

    Get PDF
Natural reserves are important to maintain natural heritage and endangered ecosystems. Therefore, there are specific environmental legislation, economic resource allocation and qualified personnel. In the case of Calden Forest these policies, based on Provincial Law N°2624, are efficient to counteract deforestation and fires but are not efficient enough to reduce the risk and environmental problems associated to the advance of agroecosystems, a process which has increased during the last decade. This is the reason why the area of Parque Luro Natural Reserve represents a situation of imminent risk in relation to the context. The aim of this research is to analyze the environmental changes caused by use of rural soil. The methodology applied consists in analyzing current legislation and the environmental management. It is carried out from a diagnosis based on students’ reports, interviews prepared by the faculty of Biogeography, contributions by the Environment Undersecretariat and production statistics for the reserve adjacent area. This comprehensive analysis, reflected in a problems tree, makes it possible to determine the need for creating a binding buffer zone. Minimal versus specialist equipment for the delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD

    Get PDF
Background: Evidence for pulmonary rehabilitation(PR)largely comes from trials where the intervention used specialist aerobic and/or resistance equipment.Limited data exist to demonstrate the efficacy of PR in community settings with minimal equipment. Aims: To compare completion rates and outcomes in COPD patients undergoing PR in a community setting with minimal equipment(PR-min)with a matched sample undergoing PR in a gym setting with specialist aerobic and resistance equipment(PR-gym). Methods: Using propensity score matching,318 patients with COPD referred for 8 weeks of PR-min were matched 1:1 with a control group of 318 patients who undertook 8 weeks of PR-gym. Completion rate(attendance≥8 supervised sessions)and changes in incremental shuttle walk(ISW),Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire(CRQ)and quadriceps maximal voluntary contraction(QMVC)were compared. Results: Groups were matched for age(70.8v70.7years),FEV1%predicted(46.8v45.8),ISW(192v195m),%current smoking status(19v20)and depression scores(6.5v6.6).No between group differences were seen in ISW,CRQ or QMVC change. Completion rates were better in the PR-gym(73%)as opposed to the PR-min(64%);p=0.01. Conclusion: This case-control study shows that PR-min had similar benefits to PR-gym.A randomised non-inferiority trial is needed to confirm the findings of this study

Combining GPR and historical aerial photographs to investigate river channel morphodynamics, Oldman River, southern Alberta

    Get PDF
River channels are dynamic landforms that play an important role in regulating riparian ecosystems. At a fundamental level, river erosion and deposition produce changes in the riparian zone that lead to the creation of new habitat or reworking of existing habitat. Despite considerable riparian research along the Oldman River in southern Alberta, little is known about historical channel dynamics and the resulting implications for riparian habitat. This research paper documents long term dynamics of a segment of the Oldman River at Fort Macleod, AB. Specifically, historical aerial photographs and a ground penetrating radar (GPR) were used to reconstruct how the river channel and bar features evolved over the last 70 years. Results from the aerial photographs indicate that the channel has undergone pronounced changes since 1938, with a trend of increasing meander curvature and decreasing wavelength. Channel bank reinforcement at Fort Macleod will likely constrict further meander development and force continued downstream meander migration. Subsurface imaging of a channel bar with GPR reveals a dominant mode of vertical accretion by bedload deposition at high flow stages, indicating a compound feature formed by overlapping unit bars. Observations of other bars along the Oldman River indicate similar modes of emplacement. Overall, results from this case study provide important context for assessing recent changes in riparian habitat. Application of this approach to other river segments will be of value in assessing whether similar patterns of channel and bar dynamics exist throughout the Oldman watershed
