    Parental child-feeding strategies in relation to Dutch children's fruit and vegetable intake

    Objective: To identify parental child-feeding strategies that may increase children's fruit or vegetable intake, since the relationship between these strategies and children's intake has never been investigated for fruit and vegetables as two separate food groups. Design: A survey study, where parents provided information about their practices in relation to feeding their children and about their own and their children's fruit and vegetable intake. Children completed a preference questionnaire about fruit and vegetables. To find underlying parental child-feeding strategies, factor analysis was applied to parents' practices in relation to fruit and vegetables separately. Regression analysis was used to predict the effect of these strategies on children's fruit and vegetable intake. The impact of the strategies was further analysed by estimating children's intake based on the frequency of use of specific strategies. Setting: The study was conducted at three primary schools in The Netherlands. Subjects: A total of 259 children between 4 and 12 years old and their parents (n242). Results: Parents used different strategies for fruit as compared with vegetables. The vegetable-eating context was more negative than the fruit-eating context. Parental intake and presenting the children with choice were positive predictors of children's intake of both fruit and vegetables. The intake difference based on frequency of use of the strategy 'Choice' was 40 g/d for vegetables and 72 g/d for fruit (

    Grounding philosophy

    Two aspects of commonly used definitions of the ideal ground are inconsistent with Maxwell's laws. First, a ground cannot be a "perfect sink or source for currents"; not even the large capacitance of our globe acts as a sink. Secondly, a "perfect equipotential point or plane" can be a reality for small dc currents only. For alternating currents however, distributed magnetic fluxes near ground leads make the potential concept, as used in Kirchhoff's laws, meaningless. In this situation where network theory fails, we should concentrate on the ground currents and on the circuits in which these currents flow. Examples are given how these current loops should be designed to minimize impedance and interference. A proper design leads to compact and local grounding and to much reduced currents flowing to Mother Earth

    A class of distribution-free control charts

    Distribution-free Shewhart-type control charts are proposed for future sample percentiles based on a reference sample. These charts have a key advantage that their in-control run length distribution do not depend on the underlying continuous process distribution. Tables are given to help implement the charts for given sample sizes and false alarm rates. Expressions for the exact run length distribution and the average run length (ARL) are obtained using expectation by conditioning. Properties of the charts are studied, via evaluations of the run length distribution and the ARL. These computations show that in certain cases the proposed charts have attractive ARL properties over standard parametric charts such as the CUSUM and the EWMA. Calculations are illustrated with several short examples. Also included is a numerical example, using data from Montgomery (1997), where an application of the precedence chart produced slightly different results

    Semiparametric theory and empirical processes in causal inference

    In this paper we review important aspects of semiparametric theory and empirical processes that arise in causal inference problems. We begin with a brief introduction to the general problem of causal inference, and go on to discuss estimation and inference for causal effects under semiparametric models, which allow parts of the data-generating process to be unrestricted if they are not of particular interest (i.e., nuisance functions). These models are very useful in causal problems because the outcome process is often complex and difficult to model, and there may only be information available about the treatment process (at best). Semiparametric theory gives a framework for benchmarking efficiency and constructing estimators in such settings. In the second part of the paper we discuss empirical process theory, which provides powerful tools for understanding the asymptotic behavior of semiparametric estimators that depend on flexible nonparametric estimators of nuisance functions. These tools are crucial for incorporating machine learning and other modern methods into causal inference analyses. We conclude by examining related extensions and future directions for work in semiparametric causal inference

    Cholangiocyte organoids to study drug-induced injury

    Background: Drug induced bile duct injury is a frequently observed clinical problem leading to a wide range of pathological features. During the past decades, several agents have been identified with various postulated mechanisms of bile duct damage, however, mostly still poorly understood. Methods: Here, we investigated the mechanisms of chlorpromazine (CPZ) induced bile duct injury using advanced in vitro cholangiocyte cultures. Intrahepatic cholangiocyte organoids (ICOs) were driven into mature cholangiocyte like cells (CLCs), which were exposed to CPZ under cholestatic or non-cholestatic conditions through the addition of a bile acid cocktail. Results: CPZ caused loss of monolayer integrity by reducing expression levels of tight junction protein 1 (TJP1), E-cadherin 1 (CDH1) and lysyl oxidase homolog 2 (LOXL2). Loss of zonula occuludens-1 (ZO-1) and E-cadherin was confirmed by immunostaining after exposure to CPZ and rhodamine-123 leakage further confirmed disruption of the cholangiocyte barrier function. Furthermore, oxidative stress seemed to play a major role in the early damage response by CPZ. The drug also decreased expression of three main basolateral bile acid transporters, ABCC3 (ATP binding cassette subfamily C member 3), SLC51A/B (solute carrier family 51 subunit alpha/beta) and multidrug resistance transporter ABCB1 (ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1), thereby contributing to bile acid accumulation. CPZ did not induce an inflammatory response by itself, but addition of TNFα revealed a synergistic effect. Conclusion: These results show that ICOs present a model to identify toxic drugs affecting the bile ducts while providing mechanistic insights into hepatotoxicity.</p

    Appearance Matters: Neural Correlates of Food Choice and Packaging Aesthetics

    Neuro-imaging holds great potential for predicting choice behavior from brain responses. In this study we used both traditional mass-univariate and state-of-the-art multivariate pattern analysis to establish which brain regions respond to preferred packages and to what extent neural activation patterns can predict realistic low-involvement consumer choices. More specifically, this was assessed in the context of package-induced binary food choices. Mass-univariate analyses showed that several regions, among which the bilateral striatum, were more strongly activated in response to preferred food packages. Food choices could be predicted with an accuracy of up to 61.2% by activation patterns in brain regions previously found to be involved in healthy food choices (superior frontal gyrus) and visual processing (middle occipital gyrus). In conclusion, this study shows that mass-univariate analysis can detect small package-induced differences in product preference and that MVPA can successfully predict realistic low-involvement consumer choices from functional MRI data

    Long-Term Survival and Quality of Life After Fenestrated Endovascular Repair for Complex Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

    Objectives: Fenestrated endovascular repair (FEVAR) has become a widely used treatment option for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) but long-term survival and quality of life (QoL) outcomes are scarce. This single center cohort study aims to evaluate both long-term survival and QoL after FEVAR.Methods: All juxtarenal and suprarenal AAA patients treated with FEVAR in a single-center between 2002 and 2016 were included. QoL scores, measured by the RAND 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36), were compared with baseline data of the SF-36 provided by RAND.Results: A total of 172 patients were included at a median follow-up of 5.9 years (IQR 3.0-8.8). Follow-up at 5 and 10 years post-FEVAR yielded survival rates of 59.9% and 18%, respectively. Younger patient age at surgery had a positive influence on 10-year survival and most patients died due to cardiovascular pathology. Emotional well-being was better in the research group as compared to baseline RAND SF-36 1.0 data (79.2 ± 12.4 vs 70.4 ± 22.0; P &lt; 0.001). Physical functioning (50 (IQR 30–85) vs 70.6 ± 27.4; P = 0.007) and health change (51.6 ± 17.0 vs 59.1 ± 23.1; P = 0.020) were worse in the research group as compared to reference values.Conclusions: Long-term survival was 60% at 5-years follow-up, which is lower than reported in recent literature. An adjusted positive influence of younger age at surgery was found on long-term survival. This could have consequences for future treatment indication in complex AAA surgery but further large-scale validation is necessary.</p
