"In the early 19th century, the only way to transmit information was to send letters across the oceans by sailing ships or across land by horse and coach. Growing world trade created a need and technological development introduced options to improve general information transmission. Starting in the 1830s, a network of steamships, railways, canals and telegraphs was gradually built to connect different parts of the world. The book explains how the rate of information circulation increased many times over as mail systems were developed. Nevertheless, regional differences were huge. While improvements on the most significant trade routes between Europe, the Americas and East India were considered crucial, distant places such as California or Australia had to wait for gold fever to become important enough for regular communications. The growth of passenger services, especially for emigrants, was a major factor increasing the number of mail sailings. The study covers the period from the Napoleonic wars to the foundation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and includes the development of overseas business information transmission from the days of sailing ships to steamers and the telegraph.

"Ne näki musta" : Huostassa olevien lasten hyvinvointi ja sijaishuoltoon liittyvät kokemukset

Huostaanotossa merkittävä vastuu lapsen hyvinvoinnista siirtyy julkiselle vallalle. Kuuntelemalla huostassa olevia lapsia saadaan tietoa lasten hyvinvoinnista, lastensuojelun käytännöistä ja siitä, miten julkinen valta on onnistunut tehtävässään lasten edun, oikeuksien ja hyvinvoinnin turvaajana. Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin 20 joko sijaisperheessä tai lastensuojelulaitoksessa asuvaa lasta sekä tuotettiin toiminnallisessa ryhmässä keskusteluaineistoa viiden perhehoidossa olevan lapsen kanssa. Lapset ja nuoret kertovat kohentuneesta hyvinvoinnista mutta myös turvattomuudesta, omien kokemustensa vähättelystä ja epäoikeudenmukaisesta kohtelusta. Lasten kokemuksissa sosiaalityöntekijät näyttäytyvät etäisinä, ja vain harva muisti tavanneensa sosiaalityöntekijän kahden kesken. Palvelujen näkökulmasta tutkimuksen tuloksista korostuvat sijaishuollon ohjauksen ja valvonnan merkitys, kysymys toistuvista sijaishuoltopaikan muutoksista sekä lapsen asioista vastaavan sosiaalityöntekijän työn organisointi niin, että hänellä olisi mahdollisuus rakentaa luottamuksellinen suhde lapseen. Tutkimus tarjoaa valtakunnallisille ja (maa)kunnallisille päättäjille tietoa lastensuojelua koskevien ratkaisujen tekemiseen ja sijaishuollon kehittämiseen sekä pohdittavaa lastensuojelun ammattilaisille

Avointa vertaisarviointia koskevalle selvitykselle rahoitus

Avoimen tieteen politiikka suuntaa väistämättä myös vertaisarviointia koskevia käytäntöjä. Tutkimusprosessien avaaminen liittyy keskeisesti avoimeen vertaisarviointiin, jonka mahdollisuuksista ei kuitenkaan vielä ole olemassa juurikaan tietoa saati ohjeistusta. Selvitystyön tavoitteena on saada tietoa avointa vertaisarviointia koskevista asenteista ja suunnitelmista suomalaisen tiedejulkaisemisen kentällä sekä lisätä kentän ymmärrystä aiheesta. Tavoitteena on myös laatia lehdille konkreettisia malleja erilaisista vertaisarvioinnin tavoista. Selvityksen kohderyhmiä ovat lehtien ja kirjankustantajien toimituskunnat, lehteen tai teokseen kirjoittaneet sekä vertaisarvioijat.</p
