Food Choices in Schools – A School Improvement Plan

    Get PDF
School Nutrition is an integral part of student education, but often overlooked. This school improvement plan establishes a district wide outline better nutrition and food choices. The plan addresses the need for healthy food education through health class and professional development, full community involvement from stakeholders, parents, teachers, and school nutrition directors to implement the change of food choices for school breakfast, lunch, and in vending machines. A review of literature was conducted to support the plan and examines how student nutrition affects student achievement and learning, and recognizes the increase in childhood obesity due to unhealthy food choices in schools

Survival of a genetically engineered Pseudomonas putida strain in soil and its potential to conjugatively transfer genes to indigenous soil bacteria

Non-Peer ReviewedThere is an interest in releasing genetically engineered bacteria into the environment as biofertilizers, biological control agents or to remediate contaminated soil. However, there is little information available on the factors affecting the persistence of genetically engineered bacteria or their potential to transfer genes to indigenous soil microorganisms. This study assessed the survival of a genetically engineered Pseudomonas putida strain CR30RNS (pADPTel) in bulk and rhizosphere soil and its ability to transfer genes for atrazine degradation and tellurite resistance to indigenous soil bacteria. The P. putida strain survived for ten weeks in bulk and rhizosphere soil at approximately 106 cfu per g soil. After the plants were harvested, the population of the P. putida strain declined to undetectable levels. However, upon the addition of water and a nutrient solution containing atrazine, the P. putida CR30RNS (pADPTel) population in the rhizosphere soil rebounded to a density of ca. 105 cfu per g soil while the population in bulk soil remained undetectable. The frequency of conjugative gene transfer to indigenous soil bacteria was assessed under laboratory conditions by the use of filter matings. Under optimal conditions a range of 1-10-2 transconjugants per recipient was observed. Recipient bacteria were identified by FAME analysis as Rahnella aquatilis strains. The results indicate that the genetically engineered bacteria survived better in the rhizosphere of canola than in bulk soil, and had the potential to transfer genes to indigenous soil bacteria

    Corporations and the American Polity

Research on corporate communications’ effects on politics presents an acknowledgement of a relationship between the two topics, leaving a void in the explanation and examination of this topic. The void presents an opening to introduce a conceptual process for how corporations are able to craft communications to influence the American Polity, the democratic social organization within the United States. This research begins with a historical review of how corporations gain prominence in American society, capturing the ability to participate in the democratic social organization of the polity. A qualitative analysis of several conceptual frameworks serves as data, to establish an understanding of influential communications’ structure, providing a basis for corporate communication approaches for influencing specific targets. Lobbying, corporate social responsibility and storytelling represent methods of communications. The basis applies to corporate communications, specifically political engagement reports from Abbot, Apple, Clorox, Target, and Johnson & Johnson, to evaluate the findings from the conceptual analysis. Conceptual theories include Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, Design Theory, Persuasion, Stakeholder Theory and Storytelling

Strategies for Outsourcing Manufacturing in the Caribbean

Ineffective outsourcing strategies fail to overcome cultural challenges. Outsourcing apparel industry leaders who fail to overcome cultural barriers negatively impact the organization\u27s financial growth and trajectory. Grounded in the theory of constraints, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the strategies apparel industry leaders use to overcome cultural barriers when outsourcing internationally. Participants comprised 3 North American apparel company leaders who successfully implemented strategies to overcome outsourcing challenges in the Caribbean. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and reviewing company documents. Yin’s 5-step approach, methodological triangulation, and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. Three themes emerged: training and implementation, engagement in the community, and use of local talent and management. A key recommendation is apparel industry leaders should utilize local talent and engage with the community when outsourcing operations to the Caribbean. The implications for positive social change include apparel industry leaders\u27 potential to create jobs and support the local communities\u27 economic development

A composite system approach to aircraft cabin fire safety

    Get PDF
The thermochemical and flammability characteristics of two polymeric composites currently in use and seven others being considered for use as aircraft interior panels are described. The properties studied included: (1) limiting oxygen index of the composite constituents; (2) fire containment capability of the composite; (3) smoke evolution from the composite; (4) thermogravimetric analysis; (5) composition of the volatile products of thermal degradation; and (6) relative toxicity of the volatile products of pyrolysis. The performance of high temperature laminating resins such as bismaleimides is compared with the performance of phenolics and epoxies. The relationship of increased fire safety with the use of polymers with high anaerobic char yield is shown. Processing parameters of one of the baremaleimide composites are detailed

    Ophelia Business Proposal

This capstone project is a culmination of everything students have learned since their first day at Johnson & Wales. Knowledge from each lab and culinary academic course was used to come up with a restaurant concept and execute fine services to friends, family, and industry leaders. With this, Ophelia was created, a restaurant experience based on astrology. A group of friends on a mission to give the consumer a dining experience unlike anything they have seen before. Attractive to multiple target markets, our restaurant has two distinct sides of the dining room. First, a sophisticated but welcoming tasting menu experience. Courses are based off of the zodiac signs, each course serving as a representation of that sign. For example, Taurus is represented by a Bison Tartare. The bison tartare is paired with a gribiche foam and a nut tuile, giving the dish earthy tones while maintaining rich and vibrant flavors. On the other side of the restaurant, there is a full function bar with a bar menu. In the restaurant industry, drinks are one of the most profitable items you can sell. The bar menu includes a variety of “out of this world” cocktails and drinks and gives friend groups the opportunity to go out and experience a laid back atmosphere without the formality. In addition to the drink menu, the exclusive bar menu that gives a fun take on classic bar foods like the crescent moon fried mozzarella. Overall, Ophelia changes the way fine-dining is viewed, giving a wide range to our target consumers and the success they bring
