Absentmindedly scrolling through nothing: liveness and compulsory continuous connectedness in social media

Social media fuel a sense of unsettledness to encourage uninterrupted connectivity and generate quantifiable engagement. This article is concerned with the habitual, naturalized character acquired by these platforms and with how this is paradoxically constructed by prompting a permanent state of anticipation. The aim here is to explore, with a phenomenological sensibility, the experiences that emerge in settings of continuous connectedness from the perspective of the people who use these technologies in the context of everyday life – that is, the ‘users’. Theoretically, the entry point is to revisit the claim of liveness – and its shifting relations with issues of sequential flow and eventfulness – and to position it as a central resource in this process, in which users are deliberately encouraged to expect the unexpected even in ‘non-eventful’ situations. Drawing from the thematic analysis of data collected through the diary-interview method with people who live in London and use a range of social media, I examine both how this urge of continuous connectedness operates and the ambivalent experiences it generates. The findings were categorized into five themes: excitement, anxiety, reassurance, fatigue, and responsibility

L’encapsulament autístic subjacent en una pacient amb una organització fronterera narcisista

    Get PDF

The Pursuit of Television Broadcasting Activities in the European Community

In October 1989, the foreign ministers of the European Community (EC or Community) approved a Directive governing the pursuit of trans-European television broadcasting beginning in 1992. Controversial article 4 of the Directive requires Member States to devote a majority of their television air time to European-produced programs. Although the Community Council maintains that the quota is merely a political commitment intended to preserve Europe\u27s cultural heritage, the United States challenges the legality of the quota as economic protectionism under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and section 301 of the United States Trade Act, as amended by the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 (section 301). This Note examines the dispute between the United States and the EC concerning the implementation of the Directive\u27s majority quota on non-Community television programming. First, discussion focuses on the implementation of the Directive against the backdrop of the expanding United States presence in the European television market. This note then sets forth the United States challenge to the adoption of the Directive. Next, the possibilities for successful United States challenge to the Directive under the GATT or section 301 are analyzed. This analysis evaluates the applicability of GATT principles to television broadcasting and discusses recent attempts to adopt a far reaching General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) governed by GATT principles. In examining the applicability of section 301 to this dispute, the author assesses past United States responses under section 301. In conclusion, although the Directive raises legitimate concerns of the extent to which the EC will use quotas to achieve Community goals after 1992, the United States strong response to the Directive lacks credibility given past United States practice. Further, the Directive\u27s economic impact on United States suppliers of television programs is lessened by the increasing need for programming hours to fill the expanding EC television market and by the opportunity to circumvent the Directive\u27s suggested majority quota through European expansion by United States programming suppliers

Simultaneous left colectomy and standard hepatectomy reformed by laparoscopy

O objetivo do presente estudo é demonstrar a ressecção de um tumor sincrônico de sigmoide e metástase hepática única tratada por colectomia e setorectomia lateral esquerda puramente laparoscópicaLaparoscopic approaches have been increasingly used in patients with colorectal or liver cancer. Simultaneous colectomy and hepatectomy are considered safe techniques and present similar oncological results regardless of the location of the primary tumor when there are fewer than four liver metastases, since there is no increase in morbidity or decrease in survival. The development of laparoscopic techniques and materials has made the combined resection of the colon and liver a very attractive option. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the synchronous resection of the sigmoid tumor and single liver metastasis treated by purely laparoscopic colectomy and liver left lateral sectorectomy

Education can have a tremendous impact on how we, as humans, understand and relate to each other and the larger environmental systems to which we belong. In efforts to address the role of education in alleviating and eliminating social suffering and environmental degradation in many of the worlds’ diverse communities, the purpose of this critical ethnographic case study is to qualitatively examine the design of an intermediary organization within the context of eco-democratic reform. The study involved observation, interviewing, and analysis that included personal narrative accounts from 12 key members in the organization and their thick descriptions of the design and function of the Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition (SEMIS). The study explores new territories for community-based collaborations and examines the complexity of such initiatives, while focusing on professional development and adult learning framed by an EcoJustice Education approach to place-based education. The study illustrates the identity of SEMIS as a learning organization with a strong commitment to designing and providing sustained professional development in the region. The deep design of SEMIS offers insight into the structure and the complexity of the networks of learning relationships in this intermediary organization. Major contributions from this case study include a) an organizational history of SEMIS; b) an articulation and analysis of the SEMIS sustained professional development; and c) a unique learning model for the development of an eco-ethical consciousness. The study presents the examination and analysis of a unique intermediary organization in the context of eco-democratic reform and illustrates both the design and the complex approach to the work in SEMIS
