    On the Spiral Structure of the Milky Way Galaxy

    We consider the possible pattern of the overall spiral structure of the Galaxy, using data on the distribution of neutral (atomic), molecular, and ionized hydrogen, on the base of the hypothesis of the spiral structure being symmetric, i.e. the assumption that spiral arms are translated into each other for a rotation around the galactic center by 180{\deg} (a two-arm pattern) or by 90{\deg} (a four-arm pattern). We demonstrate that, for the inner region, the observations are best represented with a four-arm scheme of the spiral pattern, associated with all-Galaxy spiral density waves. The basic position is that of the Carina arm, reliably determined from distances to HII regions and from HI and H2 radial velocities. This pattern is continued in the quadrants III and IV with weak outer HI arms; from their morphology, the Galaxy should be considered an asymmetric multi-arm spiral. The kneed shape of the outer arms that consist of straight segments can indicate that these arms are transient formations that appeared due to a gravitational instability in the gas disk. The distances between HI superclouds in the two arms that are the brightest in neutral hydrogen, the Carina arm and the Cygnus (Outer) arm, concentrate to two values, permitting to assume the presence of a regular magnetic field in these arms.Comment: 21 pages, 14 fugures; accepted for publication in Astronomichesky Journal (Astron.     P-P Total Cross Sections at VHE from Accelerator Data

    Comparison of P-P total cross-sections estimations at very high energies - from accelerators and cosmic rays - shows a disagreement amounting to more than 10 %, a discrepancy which is beyond statistical errors. Here we use a phenomenological model based on the Multiple-Diffraction approach to successfully describe data at accelerator energies. The predictions of the model are compared with data On the basis of regression analysis we determine confident error bands, analyzing the sensitivity of our predictions to the employed data for extrapolation. : using data at 546 and 1.8 TeV, our extrapolations for p-p total cross-sections are only compatible with the Akeno cosmic ray data, predicting a slower rise with energy than other cosmic ray results and other extrapolation methods. We discuss our results within the context of constraints in the light of future accelerator and cosmic ray experimental results.Comment: 26 pages aqnd 11 figure

    Analytic models and forward scattering from accelerator to cosmic-ray energies

    Analytic models for hadron-hadron scattering are characterized by analytical parametrizations for the forward amplitudes and the use of dispersion relation techniques to study the total cross section σtot\sigma_{tot} and the ρ\rho parameter. In this paper we investigate four aspects related to the application of the model to pppp and pˉp\bar{p}p scattering, from accelerator to cosmic-ray energies: 1) the effect of different estimations for σtot\sigma_{tot} from cosmic-ray experiments; 2) the differences between individual and global (simultaneous) fits to σtot\sigma_{tot} and ρ\rho; 3) the role of the subtraction constant in the dispersion relations; 4) the effect of distinct asymptotic inputs from different analytic models. This is done by using as a framework the single Pomeron and the maximal Odderon parametrizations for the total cross section. Our main conclusions are the following: 1) Despite the small influence from different cosmic-ray estimations, the results allow us to extract an upper bound for the soft pomeron intercept: 1+ϵ=1.0941 + \epsilon = 1.094; 2) although global fits present good statistical results, in general, this procedure constrains the rise of σtot\sigma_{tot}; 3) the subtraction constant as a free parameter affects the fit results at both low and high energies; 4) independently of the cosmic-ray information used and the subtraction constant, global fits with the odderon parametrization predict that, above s70\sqrt s \approx 70 GeV, ρpp(s)\rho_{pp}(s) becomes greater than ρpˉp(s)\rho_{\bar{p}p}(s), and this result is in complete agreement with all the data presently available. In particular, we infer ρpp=0.134±0.005\rho_{pp} = 0.134 \pm 0.005 at s=200\sqrt s = 200 GeV and 0.151±0.0070.151 \pm 0.007 at 500 GeV (BNL RHIC energies).Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, aps-revtex, wording changes, corrected typos, to appear in Physical Review

    Observation of confined current ribbon in JET plasmas

    we report the identification of a localised current structure inside the JET plasma. It is a field aligned closed helical ribbon, carrying current in the same direction as the background current profile (co-current), rotating toroidally with the ion velocity (co-rotating). It appears to be located at a flat spot in the plasma pressure profile, at the top of the pedestal. The structure appears spontaneously in low density, high rotation plasmas, and can last up to 1.4 s, a time comparable to a local resistive time.     Objetivou-se realizar o levantamento fitossociológico do estrato herbáceo de uma área de Caatinga pastejada por caprinos durante o período chuvoso (fevereiro a julho), realizado na fazenda experimental Crioula, CE. Numa área de 4,8 ha utilizada durante todo ano por 19 matrizes Anglo-Nubiana foram realizadas coletas mensais para identificação das espécies presentes utilizando uma moldura com dimensão de 1,0 m x 0,25 m, lançada 20 vezes em toda a área. Hyptis suaveolans (L.) Poit e Blainvillea rhomboidea Cass. se destacaram com maiores densidades (DR) e frequências relativas (FR) durante todo período de avaliação. A abundância relativa (ABU) teve como destaque Hyptis suaveolans (L.) Poit e Blainvillea rhomboidea Cass de fevereiro a abril e Cyperus rotundus L. em maio. Apesar do razoável número de espécies monitoradas, a dominância de espécies de pouco ou nenhum valor forrageiro no extrato herbáceo, indicaram elevado nível de degradação da pastagem. Além da heterogeneidade de fatores climáticos, o ciclo de vida efêmero de algumas espécies presentes na área afetou a fitossociológia durante do período chuvoso
