    Multivariate analysis based on the physicochemical characteristics of samples of honey produced by Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) from the northern coast of Bahia state, Brazil

    This research was carried out to determine how honey samples are grouped based on physicochemical characteristics. A total of 36 honey samples, collected from January of 1999 to June of 2000, on the northern coast of Bahia State, were evaluated. with regard to humidity, color, protein, pH, acidity, formol index, electrical conductivity, ash, diastase number, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), total sugar, reducing sugars, sucrose, and types of pollen. The results indicate that HMF, reducing sugar and total sugars are the characteristics that most influenced the grouping. Two plant genera, Eucalyptus and Mimosa, were observed as predominant bee plants in the region

    Handling Time and Bite Mass Mechanisms in Large Herbivores: Contrasts between Sward Structure and Grazing Methods

    Grazing is a time-dependent process where jaw movements of prehension, handling and chewing compete with them (Laca et al. 1994; Ungar et al. 2006). The grazing efficiency is dependent of bite mass and time per bite. Bite mass has been related to sward structure by forage height, structural components (Cangiano et al. 2002). In rotational stocking this effect becomes more pronounced, especially under high grazing down levels. Consequently, there is a progressive reduction in short-term intake rate (Fonseca et al. in press). New management targets should be proposed based on the predominant influence of sward structure in short-term intake rate by grazing animals (Carvalho et al. 2007). We hypothesise that intake potential of animals grazing tropical pastures will be reduced due to higher constraints in bite formation when compared to temperate pastures.     Nutrient pollution enhances productivity and framework dissolution in algae- but not in coral-dominated reef communities

    Ecosystem services provided by coral reefs may be susceptible to the combined effects of benthic species shifts and anthropogenic nutrient pollution, but related field studies are scarce. We thus investigated in situ how dissolved inorganic nutrient enrichment, maintained for two months, affected community-wide biogeochemical functions of intact coral- and degraded algae-dominated reef patches in the central Red Sea. Results from benthic chamber incubations revealed 87% increased gross productivity and a shift from net calcification to dissolution in algae-dominated communities after nutrient enrichment, but the same processes were unaffected by nutrients in neighboring coral communities. Both community types changed from net dissolved organic nitrogen sinks to sources, but the increase in net release was 56% higher in algae-dominated communities. Nutrient pollution may, thus, amplify the effects of community shifts on key ecosystem services of coral reefs, possibly leading to a loss of structurally complex habitats with carbonate dissolution and altered nutrient recycling.Peer reviewe
