    Eficiência de sistemas de aeração em cascatas no tratamento de águas residuárias do café

    The issue of this work was to assess the efficiency of aeration systems in cascades for the treatment of wastewater from the processing of coffee fruits. The aeration system was installed in cascades of a level difference of 4.14 m from the ground with 23 steps (height, width and length of 0.18, 0.32 and 0.60 m, respectively.) Samples of influent and effluent, after system operating with three recirculations per day, over a period of 10 days, were analyzed. The average removal efficiency of COD was 28.9 % during the experiment, the removals of total solids, total volatile solids, total suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and phenolic compounds were 57.3, 71.6, 26.5, 17.2, 35.7, 62.5, 49.5 and 55 % respectively. The cascade aeration proved to be an important alternative for composition the ARC treatment systems, with a view that is effective means of low cost and relatively fast for the aerobic treatment of organic material present in those wastewaters.Para avaliar a eficiência de sistemas de aeração em cascatas no tratamento de águas residuárias do processamento dos frutos do cafeeiro (ARC), a mesma foi aplicada em cascata com 4,14 m de altura, distribuída em 23 degraus (altura, largura e comprimento de 0,18; 0,32 e 0,60 m, respectivamente). No final da cascata foi instalado um reservatório para recepção/detenção da ARC escoada, de onde, após um tempo de detenção de 3 horas e transferência para um reservatório de distribuição, era recirculada no sistema. Amostras do afluente e efluente, após sistema operar com 3 recirculações por dia, num período de 10 dias, foram coletadas e analisadas. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, pôde-se concluir que a eficiência de remoção média de DQO foi de 28,9 % durante o experimento; as remoções de sólidos totais, sólidos voláteis totais; sólidos suspensos totais, sólidos suspensos voláteis, nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio e compostos fenólicos foram de 57,3; 71,6; 26,5; 17,2; 35,7; 62,5; 49,5 e 55 %, respectivamente. A cascata de aeração mostrou ser importante alternativa para composição de sistemas de tratamento da ARC, tendo em vista que é meio efetivo de baixo custo e de relativamente rápido tratamento aeróbio do material orgânico presente nessas águas residuárias

    Cosmology of the selfaccelerating third order Galileon

    In this paper we start from the original formulation of the galileon model with the original choice for couplings to gravity. Within this framework we find that there is still a subset of possible Lagrangians that give selfaccelerating solutions with stable spherically symmetric solutions. This is a certain constrained subset of the third order galileon which has not been explored before. We develop and explore the background cosmological evolution of this model drawing intuition from other even more restricted galileon models. The numerical results confirm the presence of selfacceleration, but also reveals a possible instability with respect to galileon perturbations.Comment: 30 pages, 24 figure

    Neuroprotective activity of ursodeoxycholic acid in CHMP2B Intron5 models of frontotemporal dementia

    Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the most prevalent forms of early-onset dementia. It represents part of the FTD-Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) spectrum, a continuum of genetically and pathologically overlapping disorders. FTD-causing mutations in CHMP2B, a gene encoding a core component of the heteromeric ESCRT-III Complex, lead to perturbed endosomal-lysosomal and autophagic trafficking with impaired proteostasis. While CHMP2B mutations are rare, dysfunctional endosomal-lysosomal signalling is common across the FTD-ALS spectrum. Using our established Drosophila and mammalian models of CHMP2BIntron5 induced FTD we demonstrate that the FDA-approved compound Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) conveys neuroprotection, downstream of endosomal-lysosomal dysfunction in both Drosophila and primary mammalian neurons. UDCA exhibited a dose dependent rescue of neuronal structure and function in Drosophila pan-neuronally expressing CHMP2BIntron5. Rescue of CHMP2BIntron5 dependent dendritic collapse and apoptosis with UDCA in rat primary neurons was also observed. UDCA failed to ameliorate aberrant accumulation of endosomal and autophagic organelles or ubiquitinated neuronal inclusions in both models. We demonstrate the neuroprotective activity of UDCA downstream of endosomal-lysosomal and autophagic dysfunction, delineating the molecular mode of action of UDCA and highlighting its potential as a therapeutic for the treatment of FTD-ALS spectrum disorders

    Developments in the remote sensing of soil erosion in the perspective of sub-Saharan Africa. Implications on future food security and biodiversity

    The remote sensing of soil erosion has gained substantial consideration, with considerable scientific research work having been conducted in the past, due to technological improvements that have resulted in the release of robust, cheap and high resolution datasets with a global foot-print. This paper reviews developments in the application of remote sensing technologies in sub-Saharan Africa with a explicit emphasis on soil erosion monitoring. Soil loss due to soil erosion by water has been identified by African geomorphologists, environmentalists and governments, as the primary threat to agriculture, biodiversity and food security across the continent. The article offers a detailed review of the progress in the remote sensing as it summarises research work that have been conducted, using various remote sensing sensors and platforms and further evaluates the significance of variations in sensor resolutions and data availability for sub-Saharan Africa. Explicit application examples are used to highlight and outline this progress. Although some progress has been made, this review has revealed the necessity for further remote sensing work to provide time-series soil erosion modelling and its implications on future food security and biodiversity in the face of changing climate and food insecurity. Overall, this review have shown the immediate need for a drastical move towards the use of new generation sensors with a plausible spatial, temporal characteristics and more importantly a global foot-print

    Effect of sitagliptin on cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes

    BACKGROUND: Data are lacking on the long-term effect on cardiovascular events of adding sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor, to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind study, we assigned 14,671 patients to add either sitagliptin or placebo to their existing therapy. Open-label use of antihyperglycemic therapy was encouraged as required, aimed at reaching individually appropriate glycemic targets in all patients. To determine whether sitagliptin was noninferior to placebo, we used a relative risk of 1.3 as the marginal upper boundary. The primary cardiovascular outcome was a composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for unstable angina. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 3.0 years, there was a small difference in glycated hemoglobin levels (least-squares mean difference for sitagliptin vs. placebo, -0.29 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.32 to -0.27). Overall, the primary outcome occurred in 839 patients in the sitagliptin group (11.4%; 4.06 per 100 person-years) and 851 patients in the placebo group (11.6%; 4.17 per 100 person-years). Sitagliptin was noninferior to placebo for the primary composite cardiovascular outcome (hazard ratio, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.88 to 1.09; P<0.001). Rates of hospitalization for heart failure did not differ between the two groups (hazard ratio, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.20; P = 0.98). There were no significant between-group differences in rates of acute pancreatitis (P = 0.07) or pancreatic cancer (P = 0.32). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, adding sitagliptin to usual care did not appear to increase the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, hospitalization for heart failure, or other adverse events

    Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

    DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties
